SingStar '90s Brings Abdul, Ice, Nirvana and Hammer Time
Posted by Flynn De Marco at 3:40 AM on March 19, 2008
It's that time again! Time to brush off those microphones, warm up those vocal chords and get ready to sing your blues away. The fifth entry into the SingStar franchise, SingStar '90s, hits store shelves today with a whole slew of new old songs for your vocal acrobatic pleasure. This time around (as the name implies) we get the hits of 90's with a pretty decent mix of different styles of music. We have the Back Street Boys back to back with the likes of Nirvana, Vanilla Ice and En Vogue just to name a few. I'm not really into karaoke so much although I have become a fan of the singing portion of Rock Band, but I must admit that the idea of bouncing around my living room whilst singing Sir Mix-A-Lot's Baby Got Back does have its charms.
Singstar 90's will be available as a stand alone game or it can be purchased in a bundle with two mics. It will also feature several play modes including the co-op Duet Mode, One-on-One battle mode, eight player Pass-the-Mic mode. And as if that weren't enough, it will also be compatible with the Eye Toy so you may record your performances for later posterity and embarrassment.

Abdul, En Vogue, Vanilla Ice, Boyz II Men, Nirvana and more.
Available both as a stand-alone disc and packaged with two high-quality

"The SingStar franchise has been instrumental in making PlayStation 2 a
social entertainment hub in the home. SingStar '90s will build on this success
and provide fans with the songs and videos that made boy bands and flannel
shirts all the rage," said Jeff Reese, director, software marketing, SCEA.
"This year will be landmark for SingStar as we continue to deliver compelling
content on PlayStation 2 while also revolutionizing the franchise as we bring
it to PlayStation 3 on May 20 by giving players access to purchase hundreds of
songs and videos across multiple genres, build and customise party playlists,
and build a community of user-created performances."
Regardless of music or gaming ability, aspiring rock stars can select from
30 hit songs to sing along with while watching the actual music video on
screen. Performing to such crowd pleasing favourites as "U Can't Touch This",
"Pump up the Jam", and "Ice Ice Baby", players can take their turn in the
spotlight solo-style or share the spotlight with multiplayer modes, including
cooperative Duet Mode, one-on-one Battle Mode, and the team-based Pass-the-Mic

Sounds like US news to me! It's been out here in Aus for ages!

If it wasn't for the SingStar games my PS2 would be quietly collecting dust in my closet. These games are actually pretty fun when you get enough people who are willing to make fools out of themselves together.

Please Hammer Don't Hurt 'Em was the first CD I ever bought! Of course, you couldn't pay me to listen to MC Hammer nowadays.

Hooey! New Kids! Now all of us can try and see if we can sing high-notes if our testicles are in a vice!
Or we can try and do that Hammer side-step dance. Parachute pants not included!

I would literally buy this game just for some MC Hammer, although more than "U Can't Touch This", please?

I think some people here are getting a little confused; Singstar has been out in PAL regions for years and years, we are up to about nearly the 15th iteration now, whereas US got it only recently I believe?
Singstar 90's was definitely one of the better ones released, so if you're a fan I suggest picking it up!
Singstar PS3 felt a bit lacking, though the interface was beautiful and fresh.
And MC Hammer sucks in Singstar, they include special "rap" sections which just don't...work? At all.

Awwwwwwww yeah.
Rock Band may have taken the lead in group-gathering music games, but NOTHING beats the Mix-A-Lot!

When the hell are they going to release singstar for the ps3?
I'm holding off on buying any more singstar disks because I'd love not to have to change disks from song to song. Does anyone even have a clue on the US price for singstar for the ps3? Is it going to be $60 a disk?
I DO WANT this.

Hello, is that Kotaku? Yeah, 2006 called. They'd like their game announcement back!
[Yes, I know it's new to the US. But at least I made myself laugh.]
Snarkiness aside it's actually one of the better SingStar PS2 compilations... it's nice to see a fair number of the good tracks from it cropping up in the SingStore so you don't have to buy the crap ones, and get to enjoy the sparkly PS3 visuals rather than the crusty PS2 nastiness.

i actually have every other installment of singstar with the exception of pop. they were actually some of the funnest games before rock band came along, but there's still some fun to be had with singstar these days. im not sure i'll be picking up 90s anytime soon, but maybe if i find a decently priced used copy i may change my mind.

As others have suggested, this has been out in the UK for months and months now. I knew Singstar was more popular over here but I didn't realise NA was missing out on this gem.
Do you guys have Singstar: Rock Ballads? That and 90's are my personal favourites - full of great songs for parties!

Even though I get my karaoke fix for free online, I would shell out money to do the Hammer dance in front of my TV. Thankfully for my neighbors, I don't have a PlayStation.

Wait fifth? Arent there like 8 or 9 of these? Maybe we get more in the UK, cos I swear that list should include Bollywood, Anthems, Rock Ballads(maybe) and a couple others. And I swear this is already out, ive Hammertimed at parties before.

Singstar, smingstar. I bought that crap on PS2 and still regret the purchase. Why don't you post the thread about the 21 song DLC that dropped today for Karaoke Revolution instead. The game gets 21 songs added every other week (which is now up to 63) and I still haven't heard anything about it here.
But then again, Singstar is a Sony exclusive title which should explain it...

SingStar is great. I've shipped my PS3 to sooo many houses just for SingStar gatherings now. I should charge really, especially as my poor PS3 recently got its first scar in the process. I now have 85 songs, including the few crap ones that comes with it (Orson, Scossor Sisters, I am looking at YOU). However, I downloaded MC Hammer and regret it. The first time (and only time) I tried it in front of people, I felt so ashamed halfway through I had to stop. I've refused to do it since. Despite this, SO many people cry "WOW, MC HAMMER!" and want to have a go at it. Then cringe and die as they realise they don't know as much of it as they may have thought, and they realise how stupid they look. It's not even funny any more.
I really can't see Rock Band being as appealing when it is finally released in Europe, because the songs aren't as diverse, and the controllers are intimidating to non-gamers. And for those that say SingStar is "just karaoke", it's SO not. I hate Karaoke, but I love SingStar... Karaoke is for people who love the sound of their own voice (when pissed), and there's little point to it. But SingStar's advantage is that you can turn the mics right down, so it's more about points- the way games used to be... it's great.
The PS2 version though, interests me not. PS3 SingStar has so much more to offer... apart from the promised "hundreds of songs to download". For now anyway.
[end of SingStar love-in]
