Those who isolate themselves are less likely to engage in any political activity. Currently less people engages in activities that promote social capital such as bowling teams and as a whole the political participation of nation has also declined.

On another note, today while airsofting we were talking about how cool rainbow six vegas 2 xbox 360 is but that it would be much more fun if it was third person. Someone mentioned maybe Metal Gear Online would do it. I told them I would run naked in the street praying to the Sony Overlords if they ever released a SOCOM on the PS3.

I hope they don't find out about this because, well, I'm gonna have to run down the street naked, and knowing my friends they will probably pelt me with bbs. The Sony Overlords always punish those who say thier names in vain. Goddammit.

For a PSN game this title is shaping-up pretty damn nicely. I never got into the SOCOM games on PS2 but I've definitely been keeping my eye on this one. Hopefully they can deliver a delightfully long and expandable experience like the dudes over at Incognito did with Warhawk.

This is pretty awesome, and really unique. I don't think you guys need to be flipping out either, I mean, how easy is it (usually) to make a clan in a game that isn't an MMO? Exactly. Just make a group with whatever buddies you have in real life, and relish the thought that you guys will have a uniform look when you do play together, and a look you (hopefully) will like when you are not. Just think for a second, chaps.

@elpoepFTW: as I recall at least, no vehicles. This game was "going back to the roots of SOCOM 1 and 2" according to the developers a few months back.

I've always loved SOCOM. 3 was ok, but the vehicles on land needed to go, the boats rocked.

And to others, of course there is going to be voice chat, SOCOM 1 had that. Would be silly not to.

This game will try a mimic GhostRecon while adding a bit more arcade-style spice i.e. COD4; oh with vehicles ala Battlefield. This isn't a bad thing, just another been-there-done-that title.

Sure, tell kids something they can't do and watch them bitch and moan. A single soldier is a commando or mercenary. A group of soldiers are Special Forces. Who cares you can't wear a matching sequenced set of fatigues or use a different shaped weapon. My mercenary bullets will kill you the same way. BOOOM HEADSHOT!

It sounds like a good incentive to make friends and play together, but that does exclude the casual players from experiencing the game with all the weapons and special forces. Sure, you can make your casual clan, but does this mean that the items, uniforms and weapons are only available when you play with your clan or is it available all the time? Can you make a clan by yourself so you can get the stuff right away or do you need an extra person to confirm they're going to be part of your clan for it to work?

As for the game, I used to be a huge SOCOM 2 whore right before the glitches really took hold of the game. I tried my hand at SOCOM 3, but it didn't have the magic of its predecessor. I'm excited to see how this developer can handle SOCOM. I'm also excited to see how this game can compete with Call of Duty 4. CoD4 raised the bar for online multiplayer, and although SOCOM is an established Sony brand, it's going to have to put up some really great stuff to compete with it.

@Wait: Correct, this game is online only. It's being developed by Slant Six. Zipper Interactive (the original developers of SOCOM) are working on SOCOM 4 which should be a full featured game. No word on when that will be out.

@jslay012: Hmm... Alright? You could probably just find a "casual clan" on gamefaqs message boards for the game. One that will allow you to be a part of their team but it's casual enough that you can just play whenever you and they are online at the same time, no schedules, no requirements, just play when you can. It's no big deal. I'm sure it's plenty fun to play the game without being one of those specialists, too. Remember, if you're playing as the regular character, then so will everyone you're playing against, because you won't be in a clan match, so nobody could use the specials.

I'm looking forward to this game, surely.

I don't play SOCOM myself, but I think that sony's strategy is really cool. Maybe it will turn off some gamers, but at least it's being proactive. I'm really happy with the growing focus on co-op and multiplayer gaming...so long as it doesn't lead to the detriment of single-player experiences overall.

@jslay012: Not necessarily better (or worse, for that matter), just different. I see these "clans" more like classes in WoW or Diablo (for instance) where you have exclusive access to some equipment while no access to others.

I doubt the assault rifle the SAS use in the game won't be better or worse than the assault rifle the SEALs use.

And I highly doubt you're going to get screwed if you decide to play without a "clan."

I have never been a fan of clans, mostly because I never really know if they're any good or if the people are fun, which to me is more important than being dominant.

But this game, which I am almost surely purchasing, seems to have a good way to make me choose and actually try to play with the same team over and over.

Usually, I pick and choose friends but it can be hard to get everybody together. Props to Sony for at least trying something different and hopefully adding to the experience.
