Some Disgaea DS Details Revealed
Posted by Flynn De Marco at 5:20 AM on March 19, 2008
The folks at CrispyGamer got a chance to corner NIS America's PR Manager Jack Niida to talk a bit about the much anticipated release of Disgaea: Hour of Darkness on the DS. It's a short interview, but there is some interesting information in there including some talk of the game appearing on other consoles. Since the game will probably mostly be purchased by fans of the franchise, the obvious question would be, what's new?
The main feature of Disgaea DS is the multi-player mode. Fans that are tired of the original can still get a kick out of this game by destroying their buddy's Laharl and Etna...
The intuitive stylus controls and dual screen is a huge plus, but there are newly added features and characters from our past titles, so there is still a lot of oomph left in this game.
Niida goes on to mention that this version of the game will include everything from the PSP version plus extra content. For Digaea fans this should prove to quite interesting news.

@Knoxximus (360/PSN): I've been playing it on the PSP a lot lately. The load times are among the best you'll find on the PSP. Very short and pretty much completely unnoticeable after you get started. Every now and again there will be about a 1 second or less load time between voiced dialogue.

Usually I side with the DS, but I'm gonna hafta give the nod to the PSP version this time. Load times aside, you can play it on your TV as well as on the go (if you have the PSP-2000). Auto win!

Multiplayer? really?
I'm as big a fan of Disgaea as anyone, but I'm gonna say right now that it isn't a multiplayer game.
I can imagine it going something like this:
"Okay, I got a great strategy to beat you! I worked out every possible move you can make and a way to counter it, so let's go... and... oh hey, you're level 9999 already?"

God DAMNIT, and I was just about to start the psp version. Now I'm even scared of playing the DS version, because by the time it rolls out, there will be talks of a remake! Cool that they are expanding their audience though, but christ guys, don't become the next Square-Enix (although they have been pretty cool about their ports lately; overhauling the graphics and dialogue and whatnot, effectively making the term "port" null and void)

Hmmm... now I'm not sure whether to get the PSP version or the DS version. On the one hand, the PSP version has better graphics. On the other, the multiplayer on the DS is more interesting to me since I actually have friends who own DSes, but none that own PSP. Why couldn't they have just made this a new game? Stupid NIS.

@KirbyMorph: @KirbyMorph: It's only the third system that Disgaea has been on, isn't it? Capcom managed to put Resident Evil 2 on Playstation, PC, Nintendo 64, Dreamcast, Gamecube, and Game.Com. That's right. Game.Com. Dood! And that's only one of many examples of Capcom knowing precisely how to whore out a game/franchise.

Oh yeah, I imagine I missed something. My point being though is that it's deep. You can easily sink MMO-esque time into the game building your characters and items and such.
The dialogue and voice acting was always pretty good too, hopefully they can fit all that into a tiny tiny DS cart.

@Modus_Operandi: I don't agree about Disgaea 3. I downloaded the HD trailer on the PS3's Japan store and I watch it every time I turn on my PS3 haha. I'm playing Disgaea on PSP at the moment, and just watching the trailer D3 looks gets me all excited to play it. Looks really awesome. If they changed it too much, it simply wouldn't be Disgaea. They took the same basic game and just awesomed it up a whole lot. I'm cool with that.

Disgaea is such an amazing game. I am still playing it on the PSP, and I probably won't stop between now and when it comes out for DS. I really don't like the idea of losing all my work (between leveling up items, pupils, residents, transmigrations, etc, it's easy to put hundreds of hours into Disgaea) and having to start out as a lowly level 1 demon, but, hell, I'll do it if there's no other way to play online battles, and hopefully the map on the top screen makes the game a little easier to play (the only problem I ever had with the game was the awful limited camera control which can make it hard to see what you're looking for).

@PearceShea: I tend to not agree that SRPG's cant evolve. Every genre can, its just waiting for someone creative and crazy enough to do so. I mean thats how Disgaeae came about to begin with. The thing is at least bring some substantial new gameplay mechanics or tell a new story. Seriously D2 felt almost like a re-imagining of the original. Like a directors cut or something. 3 doesnt look to change things up too much. Sometimes thats good but by the time you get to a part 3 in anything youre getting close to wearing away the novelty.

@Modus_Operandi: Fair enough, and while Atlus has been diversifying, NIS has pretty much made the same sort of game over and over.
In their defense, the only games they've made that have done well have been SRPGs and not only is that a format that appeals, generally, to only a handful of people, it's also not exactly a genre where there seems to be a lot of room for innovation.

@PearceShea: @excel_excel: Hey like I said Im a big fan. I got Phatom Brave. I have Makai Kingdom. I love the fact that they released a PSP verison. And Im glad to see them making dough. But its high time they start making a new engine for this series as its becoming their FF. And I mean that in a bad way. Theyre starting to slap Disgaeae on games just to sell it. Look at Phantom Brave and Makai Kingdom. They were similiar to Disgaeae and were estenially sequels to that game but had different names even though the gameplay was basically the same. But after seeing Disgaeae 2 and seeing early shots of 3 I have to say that it feels like Atlus is using the Square mentality. "Why make a new game or call it something different when we can just call it Disgaeae and slap a number after it and itll sell better?"
NEw engine. At least a next gen one.

Voices and full cutscenes intact, nice... good to see they "got it." I wonder if that's both languages?
It would definitely be nice sometimes to click on one pedestal of a messed up bumpy level and say "go here."
But the biggest factor for me having it on PSP is the sleep mode. It's not that the DS doesn't have an equivalent, but everytime I leave my DS sleeping it dies in a day or two. :/

@Modus_Operandi: Really? I mean I agree when it comes to the original Disgaea as I dropped over a hundred hours on the ps2 version, and have recently hit that and more on the psp version... I'd love a mobile Disgaea 2, though...
More to the point, Disgaea 3 looks quite different from its predecessors... I fail to see how this is much different from how Final Fantasy has essentially remained unchanged, albeit little improvements over the breadth of the series (how long did it take to get real time[ish] combat in that series) and I would never say that that brand has been run into the ground (though, admittedly, Squeenix is getting close...).
If anything, I'm the most happy with Atlus as I've ever been. In the past year and a half I've seen Persona 3, Fes, an announced Persona 4, Disgaea 3 (imported) and portable versions of one of their strongest games...

@crescentfresh: First off it's not really an rpg, it's a srpg (strategy rpg; think La Pucelle Tactics or FFTactics).
Disgaea is also arguably the most popular and almost certainly the deepest srpg out there. There is a broad variety of monsters and humans to include in your army, a high level of customization (including the "item world" which is a sort of side quest system that allows you, as you crawl through the items levels and defeat the "bosses" therein, to boost your items) and, as someone has already noted, you can get to a ridiculous level with ridiculous stats. The specials become equally over-the-top and there's a very self-aware, tongue-in-cheek, quirky sens of humour throughout. Though there's a lot of grinding involved, it really never feels like grinding as the game itself is quite fun.

All these ports of the original Disgaea and not a single port of Disgaea 2, or Makai Kingdom, or Phantom Brave? I don't have time these days to sit down and play the console versions, so portable versions would be nice.

@crescentfresh: Levelling up every item and weapon you have is possible (to level 999) has a good bit of humour in the cutscenes, unique play style, fun, great longevity (I had the PS2 version and played it over 200 hours, that has no multiplayer like this too!), can create your own little army of monsters (you can only use about 10 in each fight though). Very fun altogether, I recommend it alot.

Posted 11:11 PM 19/3/08
@crescentfresh:
It's an SRPG that is fairly 'deep' in terms of skills and leveling. Breaks convention by making the max character level 9999 and having individual stats max out at 999999.
Many hours can be had trying to level up characters in the various extra levels. Items can be leveled up as well, at least I think they can in Disgaea. I get various Nippon Ichi games mixed up in that respect.

@crescentfresh: Its somewhat like FF: Tactics but with more humor and less pretension. Also a ton more grinding and leveling up.
Look I love this game but seriously...stop already. Disgaea 3 is coming out and Ill be damned if it looks any better than this DS port. Atlus has suddenly become rehash crazy. Instead of rehashing the same game go and make a need engine. This series is getting close to being run into the ground. What was once a rare and beloved game is on its 4th rehash. 4th!
