Sony: PSP Portable Copy Not Coming with 2.2
Posted by Brian Crecente at 6:27 AM on March 25, 2008
Turns out it's a good thing I was so dubious.
SCEA contacted us today to let us know we were right to doubt, the Playstation 3's firmware 2.20 update will not include Portable Copy support, despite reports to the contrary.
Too bad, I'm about to go away on a trip for a few days and was thinking I might be able to bring some movies with me. Of course, I'm also still confused about whether all Blu-ray movies will be copyable or if it will be only for movies that have an extra PSP file included on the disc.

@7ucky: It's a bit of a pain getting your PS3 to recognize your PC's media share only because it's slightly outside the regular boundaries of an acceptable machine, according to the sharing software. Simply enable media sharing thru the Windows Media Player and don't bother with the whole entering shit about the connecting computers. The PS3 will recognize the share and you just tell the PC to accept it (is this a slight security problem? Yes, but only if your neighbours are the packet-sniffing injecting action kind of people). Better yet, go with a physical connection. It's pretty sweet serving up 500Gb of media from my PC to my PSP in a roundabout way.

Don't suppose Sony mentioned when the firware will drop? I have hoping today (Tuesday), as that's the usual trend. It's already Tuesday in Japan :-)

Lets be clear, Sony never promised this feature, clueless blog posters and speculation drove it.
Personally, I don't doubt the screenshots doing the rounds, I suspect there are several development streams, and this partcular one got delivered to movie producers to get thir content working.
PSP Portable Copy will arrive, just not with 2.2

I'm fairly certain this "feature" will ONLY work with Blu-ray discs that choose to include a pre-encoded PSP-compatible version of the movie on the disc. Although the PS3 is quite a powerful computer, it would still take far longer than people would likely want to wait to re-encode a 1080p encode down to something playable on your PSP.

@PapaBear434: Not sure, but it is kind of annoying. No doubt the code-monkeys at Kotaku tower are aware of it. If not, they are now.

@TrettOff: Ahh yes. And here again we see the benefit of a full-specification format, instead of one that sells on 'potential' and 'we might get around to it but not how you'd like'.
Alas, we chose the other format at consumers. Caveat Emptor.

Back when Blue Ray and HD DVD were competing with each other on features, Sony claimed that Blue Ray would have portable copying as a mandatory feature. This was after Microsoft made the same claim about HD DVD. It is clear now that these claimes were absolute fabricated bullshit.

Why is it since Kotaku's last update, every time I post the comment boards freeze up and won't progress until I post again?
It's getting quite annoying, and it basically encourages me to just stop posting.

@Seiven:
They didn't delay it. Being delayed would imply that they announced it for release with this patch. It wasn't, it was simply a rumor, and Sony contacted Kotaku to say that "Sorry, but not yet."

Why shut up? It IS important, and about time Sony gets off their incessant and never ending series of promises and actually DO it.

It won't be for all Blu-rays, just a lame few like Hitman. Plus the feature is not unique to Blu-ray as the SD versions of Harry Potter had an electronic version included as a bonus. The idea of mandatory managed copy for all movies died with HD-DVD.

Does this even matter? People who are in the know have already been putting movies on their PSP for as long as the system has been out. This isn't really that big of a deal.
Get a gig or two of memstick space, and get to downloading. You don't need a PS3 for that.

@MysteryMachine: There will always be 0 options for watching Blu-Ray while traveling where the PSP is concerned because you'd be just as well off with a plain old DVD rip.
So get a PSP now and rip your DVDs to it.

They will never allow you to rip the movie, that was Microsoft's thing that no studio wanted to go along with
They will include a PSP version on the disc

"I'm also still confused about whether all Blu-ray movies will be copyable or if it will be only for movies that have an extra PSP file included on the disc."
If only they'd cleared up that question when the feature was announced at CES and the same mistake was being made. Oh wait, they did.
(It's only for movies with the digital copy on the disc. How is the PS3 supposed to convert a copy protected - first clue - Blu-ray that probably weighs in at 30-40GB or more to any format in a reasonable time frame without it looking like a YouTube video?)

@Adam In Texas: Unfortunately, at the present time, the high cost of burnable BR media and writable BR drives makes pretty much the same price to just buy the movies.

If they did give the capability to rip any bluray to PSP I would run out and buy a PSP instantly, maybe one for my wife as well becuase right now there are 0 options for portably watching bluray (laptops are just too awkward, not to mention expensive, for watching bluray while traveling).

@fuchikoma: It takes me about 1 1/2 hours to remux 90 minutes of 720p mkv/x264 into mpg/x264 (for playback on PS3). DD5.1 track remains, as well as the native resolution and everything. That's on a 2.7GHZ AMD X2 Dual Core.
However, the trouble starts when doing that with 1080p to 1080p. Much, much more intense and demanding.
Though, when downscaling to SD for the PSP, things could actually go rapidly fast in comparison.

Hmm, I thought the smart route for BD->psp would just have the ps3 rip them and encode for psp, since it has the all powerful Cell processor.
But if it really takes all day....lamesauce

@Sundermania:
What do you base this on? It would probably take my desktop a couple of hours. 1920x1280, H.264 (probably), and 5.1 surroundsound isn't terribly exotic, though the resolution is a bit boggling in terms of CPU power.
Depending on the operations involved, it may even take a half hour on a PS3. We'll just have to see it in action. There's no reason it at all should take a day though. The PS3 can handily play Blu-ray video, and when using Remote Play, it transcodes a live video feed and streams it across the network to the PSP.

For me, this is indicative of my entire mood concerning my love/hate relationship with the PS3. I'm really pumped for some of the features, like managed copy, Home, and in-game XMB, but there is such a long time between announcement and release that I'm just getting burnt out waiting for them to arrive.

It would HAVE to be for Blu-Ray discs that include a PSP file on them. Encoding an entire movie to an SD format able to play on the PSP would take hours, probably an entire day, and use 100% of the PS3's processor.

@bysty: In certain games, like Vegas 2, you can actually access your friends list as if you were in the XMB. So you're basically limited to that one tab.
But, it's slow and sluggish as hell. Good hint at what has to be done in terms of optimizing and minimizing resource usage of the XMB.

1. XMB is nothing special. I'd much rather have this than in-game XMB.
2. My understanding was that Hitman was the first disc to have this portable file included. It's not on every disc.
3. To the dude having issues connecting PC to PS3 - send me a message and I can help you. It's easier than it seems.

Do they have a list yet what movies will have the extra file? If it's just Sony Picture Studio's movies it's not as exciting as first announced at CES.

Too bad, if the update allowed for any Blue-Ray titles to be copyable then it would have been great!
As for in-game XMB, I don't expect that until at least the release of Home, so I wouldn't advise anyone to hold their breath... unless I hate you, then go ahead ;p!

"I'm also still confused about whether all Blu-ray movies will be copyable or if it will be only for movies that have an extra PSP file included on the disc."
As I understand it, there's a smaller, ready-to-go copy of the movie sitting on the BD that can just be copied over. So not even all movies would support it. Only ones that had that feature built in. It's unlikely you'd just be able to rip any BluRay. That could prove problematically uncontrollable for Sony.

Thats why I didn't get all hyped up, its coming yes eventually but not now.
@ Crecente i know how you feel, im about to have a 7 hour flight + another 11 hour layover + 6 hour flight coming up at the end of the month :(
thats optimal stuff assuming no late planes -.-
Anyway yeah it'll come, eventually. It'll be very nice, eventually. Just like in-shirt XMB, home and everything else. Sony needs to focus on this stuff though imo because its what fence sitters are choosing 360 over ps3 for. Why wait for it on ps3 when you can just have it all on 360 now (for the most part)

I might care about this, but I'm not ready to: I can't even get help from Sony support as to how I'm supposed to connect my PS3 to my PC to get movies. For some reason both support reps that contacted me think it's okay to not read my entire message and give me instructions on how to connect to the fucking internet!
