Sony Teases Firmware 2.4 and New Chat Functionality
Posted by Mark Wilson at 5:20 AM on March 4, 2008
While Sony just took the time to confirm that 1 million PS3s had sold in the UK, it was a quote from SCEE managing director Ray Maguire that got us all hot and bothered:
Our momentum will continue with the introduction of in-game communication in the summer, firmware update 2.4 and the strongest line-up of games through our third party partners and our own studios.Let's start the semantics minigame. Does Maguire mean that we'll see the 2.4 update in the summer? And does that mean we'll see in-game XMB?
Let the arguments commence! UPDATE: It looks like he may have been talking about this.

SingStar already does in-game messaging using the XMB. Odd that a game that doesn't really need it can do it really well, whereas games where you do need it- i.e. games where you can actually play online together- don't even try. But I suspect that as SingStar is made by SCEE's London Studio, they have some kind of insider knowledge. Still, it shows that the most important part of the XMB you'll need when gaming can work already, if implemented correctly.

@gamadaya: My fellow American, you should know by now if you've spent any amount of time on Kotaku or playing games online that Europe != the UK. That's only one country, it doesn't include the bazillion other countries in Europe, in fact many brits don't even consider themselves European because it is an Archipelago, after all, and not part of the European continent except by means of close proximity.

@greeble: That looks nice. It also says it has vibration. It could be a big improvement on the sixaxis if it has some weight(should since it says it's made of metal) to it and the triggers are like the 360 triggers. If only the also reversed the positions of the left analog stick and d-pad. As it is, it still may be great as long as it doesn't have any connection issues.

@meandering_drivel: Hopefully, Microsoft will respond by clearing up the DRM transfer issues that have been gaining greater publicity.
I have to say that I was unaware of how limiting the 360 was until I purchased my PS3. HD upgrade? Check. Off console file/downloads backup? Check. Ability to set up an online profile without a credit card? Check. Run another OS? Check.
Why doesn't Microsoft allow all that? Because they're cool charging $5 a month to lock us into our hardware with no chance of escape.
That said, I still love the games on my 360.

It's been so long since I fired up my PS3, it's probably still on update 1.[something]. Really, It's probably been 6-8 months since I turned it on. Since I have 125+ games for the 360 and I can't stand the PS3 controller, It just collects dust. I'm hoping it may be worth more sometime since it's a 60GB original with the hardware BC. It has maybe 20 hrs of operation. I don't even own any BluRay disks.

Consoles sell slower in Europe in general due to higher pricing, mostly due to import tarrifs and various VAT(Value added Taxes). The PS3 is nearly double what it is in Japan or Canada after the exchange. In Europe, Canada and Japan the PS3 is a strong second to the Wii. Only in America is it a distant third.
