Speed Racer Channels WipeOut
Posted by Mike Fahey at 3:40 AM on March 11, 2008
We've seen the trailer, and now we're seeing the screenshots of Speed Racer the Video Game for the Wii. It's based off of the upcoming movie, which will be violently sodomising our childhood memories this May courtesy of the Wachowski brothers. As for the game itself, it sort of looks like WipeOut or F-Zero GX, only with the lead vehicle replaced with the Mach Five. Now this is not necessarily a bad thing mind you. I love WipeOut and F-Zero. Hell, I even loved Extreme-G for the Nintendo 64, and that was a foggy mess. No fog in these screens, so who knows? Could be a winner. Could also suck horribly, but I'd like to maintain a positive outlook. It just makes the potential disappointment that much sweeter.

Am I the only person that thought Wipeout was the poor cousin of F-Zero?
/Still looking forward to this game.

Well, it's good to see the game is going to stay true to the original spirit of Speed Racer, which was *all* about futuristic rocket-propelled racing along curved tracks suspended in mid-air.

@PapaBear434: Competely agree with you on that point, Speed Racer/Mach Go Go Go wasn't even remotely good, by the time any of us were watching it, it was badly dubbed crap. Really badly dubbed crap.
If anything, the movie has a strong chance to be pretty damn good, as the 60's 'camp' that completely infested the cartoon will be gone.

@zanzibarlegend: Me too, as it will be 10 bucks rather than 50. See? We pay more for the system, we get the same games for a huge discount. The PS3 ends up being cheaper than the wii in the end.

Oh yeah, this game looks fun, and probably is, but I doubt it offers anything especialy new to the table, which WipEout and F-Zero don't already do better without the movie/tv-show tie-ins. Games designed to be games will always be better than the movie tie in copycats.

Now to start off, I'm a fan of both F-Zero and WipEout, they're both great games. I've noticed alot of people confuse the two games, often citing WipEout as a infirior rip-off of F-Zero. This is entirely inacurate, and let me ellaborate why.
The first and most immidiately obvious difference is the style of the two games. They both reflect their country of origin in their style, WipEout dates from the 1990's electronic era in britain, when groups such as The Prodigy and Chemical Brothers ruled. WipEout uses a mix of industrial, edgy style, licensed music, and professionaly designed meterial to apply to a relatively specific demographic; the 18-24 club goer. WipEouts design is edgy and alienating to alot of people, and well, it wouldn't be WipEout if it didn't.
F-Zero is distinctively japanese, using bright colours, friendly and inviting anime-style characters which probably apply to a younger demographic, and more inviting to casual gamers. While F-Zero's style wasn't tired when it was first released I believe now-a-days that the style in F-Zero is completely overused and frankly, annoying, while WipEouts style is still under-appreciated (It's what makes it unique, although the more recent games have been a little more generic, the style is still there)
Now onto the gameplay, this is where the big and important differences are, yes they are both stupidly fast anti-gravity craft on a track wouldn't be out of place in a sonic the hedgehog game. F-Zero's gameplay is again, more accessable, with a shallow learning curve, yet somewhat hard to master, I'd argue where that F-Zero is a bit faster than WipEout, but likewise, the tracks arn't nearly as unforgiving. WipEout has an incredibly high learning curve, and is usualy one of the main critisims of the series, yet often why people can get so addicted. I personaly believe that the controls in WipEout are way more indepth, you have your side-shifts, Air-breaks, Pitch control, etc, etc, in order to even make it to the finish line on the faster speed classes you've got to master everything, and have the reflexes and eye to hand to control your craft through an average of 1-5 different turns per second.
Ultimately though the different demographics that the two games apply to means that hardcore fans of each series will probably never see eye to eye. For those of you looking for a fun enjoyable game, but nothing too hardcore, look at F-Zero. If you're into the clubbing/modern design scene, and willing to put +10 hours into learning a game, look at WipEout, it'll take you forever to master but god damnit it feels good.

@SnakeCL:
As a Wipeout fan who's largely moved to F-Zero now, I agree. When Wipeout came out, F-Zero was still 2D in Mode7. Wipeout had substantial elevation changes, and an array of weapons from the start.
Eventually F-Zero started to follow the same route. I think GX even surpasses it for track design, at least stylistically, but owes a lot to Wipeout's design, and really doesn't resemble the first games in the series (where Wipeout... tries as hard as it can not to change... hire Designer's Republic again and get a new look! Though I guess Fusion was the last big chance they made, so...)

I just lost all hope when I realized W-brothers casted "Rain" from Korea and is even making the next movie using him as the Lead Actor.
I've got love for my Korean stars and slowly but surely being the next "wave", in American cultures, but he just personifies what a western culture wants to be molded into.
He is probably one of the most recognized star in Asia, one of the first Asian to sellout Madison SG within few minutes, and a face plastered across a Boeing 757.
But an actor he is not
I lost all respect for the W brothers when, like the Max Payne adaptation, miscasting is evident due to the LACK OF RESEARCH.
I am not asking for the next "Citizen Kane", but you can make a tangible and MONEY making franchise with great script/productions and not just the NAME of the stars.
On to the the game, let Star Wars racers on N64 be a testament. Very difficult yet very very fun. I only mention the game since the pods look similiar, the POV and even the layout of the track.

@PapaBear434: Exactly. He's talking about sodomizing memories not children. Like the Transformers(2007) movie for example. Aside from that, these screens look pretty good. I just wish this were coming on 360 or PS3 too so it could be in HD. It's very colorful but overly blurry.

Isn't it the Wachowski... siblings now? Not necessarily "brothers".
As for the game sodomizing my childhood memories of Speed Racer, that's going to be hard to do. I never thought much of that show (I'd go so far as to say I adamantly disliked it!) so to sully that reputation means sinking to Superman64 levels of suck. They'd probably have to intentionally code in bugs, just to make it worse.

Im the biggest F-Zero/WipeOut junkie off all time (possibly) and this images made me raise my eyebrow (The Rock style).
Consider me interested, since I see no F-Zero Wii from Nintendo in the horizon (shame on you, Nintendo! You even have Port Town from GX running on Smash Bros Brawl!!! Evil tease!!!).
Kudos, Fahey for the Extreme-G reference. May not have perfect, but it was ace on multiplayer.

I wouldn't consider Wipeout an F-Zero ripoff. The game itself has little in-common with Wipeout besides hover vehicles and weapons.
Wipeout had a lot more going for it with the aesthetics, as well as the focus on elevation changes. If anything, F-Zero X borrowed heavily from Wipeout.

Mikey Fahey. I understand that writing for a video game website you want to keep the language fresh and alive. I'm not prudish when it comes to swear words or bad language, nor am I particularly PC.
But you said the Speedracer game "will be violently sodomizing our childhood memories this May."
Sorry mate, but this metaphor of child abuse isnt on. Im a big fan of Kotaku and I understand you might ban me for speaking up, which I would be sorry about. But Im sure you are a good enough writer, to express yourself a different way.

I think this is actually based on the new cartoon and not the movie. If you watch the trailer it says, "Last year ..." and it shows the Mach 6 instead of the Mach 5. This is the info on the new cartoon, called (not kidding) Speed Racer: The Next Generation: www.zap2it.com/tv/news/zap-speedracernicktoons,0,590126.story
Meanwhile, everything I've heard about the movie is leaving it very, very true to the anime, but we'll see.
