@Brian Ashcraft:
Consider me convinced.
Now I shall spout the age old line of "Pro's shouldn't be allowed to take part."
Luckily i'm only kidding this time.
Some of that stuff is awesome MrDandy I submit to your greatness.

I signed up just to comment because the winner definitely needs congratulating. I sent in the praying mantis and was just glad to be posted on the site.
I only took a few hours out of my evening but Mr. Dandy's
entry looks like it took serious amounts of time, planning, and effort to pull off.
Well done, seriously. I guess I'm gonna have to step up my game when you guys run another contest...

I'm a little surprised by all the doubters out there. Garage kits are a major hobby and considering the "Otaku" in "Kotaku" I'd imagine you'd be at least familiar with the Japanese (video game) garage kit stuff that Kotaku posts from time to time.
There's no reason why noone who has garage kits as a hobby can't do what Mr. Dandy has.

@kidnicky: have a look at www.mrdandy.com this guy is actually really good but i don't think he'd mass produce it due to copyright laws. But hell even i would buy it for that price although he makes them by hand so i expect a way bigger price.

Tollwaytroll-
Since this is a video game blog,I'd assume you would know the "lizard" from that Strokes CD is the Centipede from the arcade game Centipede, which was also available for Atari's home consoles, hence the joystick in the pic.
I agree it looks like a mass produced toy,but unless someone can post a pic of this toy in a package,or pics of themselves with one,you have to give the guy the benefit of the doubt. This is the internet,no gaming related action figure would be so obscure that you couldn't find any mention of it.
That being said,if Mr Dandy started mass producing it,I'd pay like 20 bucks easy.

Posted 10:45 PM 19/3/08
It appears to me that the limbs are not all the exact same size and do get smaller towards the back. This is something that a toy company would not take the time to do as it would be bad for mass production. Stop h8ing on this work! Plus the paint job/scheme is pretty lame for it to be a toy.

I too have my doubts over how genuine this is.
Any chance we could get some "in progress" shots of it?
I am a skeptic by nature and whilst i'm not saying it's impossible to make things to this standard by hand, infact i know people who do it for a living, I just find it hard to believe without proof.

Hi all! Thanks for all your kind words and the votes! I am truly honored. Sorry I never replied here, I completely missed this page, and couldn't even find it in a search, Ashcraft was kind enough to send me the link, since I am so lame. So now that nobody will ever see it, here's what I can tell you...
1. I guess I kind of went overboard on the project, but I always wanted a centipede, and also, somewhere in the original contest thread, somebody (I forget who) said they were making a huge 12" bug with articulated wings and mandibles so I figured I better try to pump it up to sit next to something like that. I guess they didn't submit, but it sounded impressive.
2. I hereby swear on a stack of Nintendo Power magazines that I began work on this project Wednesday morning, and finished that Friday, sending shots at 11:58 pm. Days 1 and 2 were sculpting, day 3 was a marathon of molding, assembly and painting. I figured that since I sculpt a lot, it might be more fair to limit myself to a short time frame. It's a pretty tight turnaround, but I've actually been asked to do worse. Very late nights of work, I'd say about 18-20 hours total labor.
3. @Bon5ai: You are right, what painting there is here sucks! I had like 10 minutes left before midnight once I got to the paint. Also, a buddy of mine has borrowed all my good hobby paints, I was stuck using crappy ones that don't cover so well.
4. The total sum of original "sculpted" parts is as follows: 1 head, 2 antennae, 4 teeth, 1 body, 1 articulated leg set (in 2 pieces), and 2 different claws (one is open wider than the other). The arm and claws are flippable, and all the body links are identical. It wasn't really very much sculpting, but it took time to get the fit on the joints to work, a lot of trial-and-error since you can't fit the front of a single link into the back of that same link for a perfect fit. And then all the casting...!
5. All the parts are cast in tinted resin, I use it because for a solid color, it's faster than painting, and it gives a toy-like plastic finish. You may notice there is some color variation between the parts. It's really hard to tint the batches all the same, and I was too cheap to commit a large jug of resin to green.
6. Dude, if there is a 2-foot centipede toy on the market already... I'd sure like to see it!
7. I love to participate in these things, but maybe from now on if I do, I'll just enter "exhibition" style, and forgo any prizes. Still, pro or no, I'm amazed the Mantis, the pendant or the kitty didn't win, you guys got a ton of votes, and rightly so. Actually I liked all your entries, some were really artistic and some had a great smile factor! This was lots of fun.
8. From here, you might see this piece wind up in a certain art show, can't say officially yet though, but keep your eyes open maybe...
