The Great Crackdown US Markdown
Posted by Flynn De Marco at 6:20 AM on March 26, 2008
Kotakuite Michael N. sends in this humorous and rather sad photo from his local Target. It seems that this particular Target had a surfeit of copies of Crackdown and is now offering them all up on an endcap for $US 15 a piece. Michael claims he checked and each and every one of those is a copy of Crackdown. Even for a large retail outlet like Target this seems like a ridiculous amount of copies to have of one game. It's also a bit of a shame considering I really liked Crackdown. It was one of the first games I got for my 360 and I thoroughly enjoyed it. On the other hand, it's a perfect opportunity for those of you who haven't tried it out yet to get it for a cheap price.

i wonder how many of them still have stickers crowing about the Halo3 Beta Test, and how many people will buy it for that, without looking about 2 metres to their left and seeing the stack of Halo 3 games

At my Target, it's still $29.98, but it'll likely get marked down again soon. We don't have piles and piles like in the picture, so if it gets marked down again it'll get bought up really quick.
I guess now I know why I got a call today asking about Crackdown, heh. :)

Geez, I went to a Target near me and saw about 500 copies of Crackdown as well. (And my first thought was "I wish I had a camera, who would believe this?")
I passed, not being a big fan of GTAish games, but I keep thinking I should go back and get it.
But the question is... who got blackmailed to have Target buy 4,593,212 copies of Crackdown for each store?

I told myself $20 was the Crackdown threshold. This had better be going on at my local Target first thing in the morning. There are some games that I think are quite good (Crackdown, Excite Truck, etc), but I can't bring myself to pay "full retail" for them (even though Crackdown has been a "budget" price for some time now).

Guess I'll go see if my local Target was equally dumb.
I know the US site doesn't do silly shit like this (wish it did), but Amazon Japan sometimes seems to purge their inventory with 20~40, sometimes 50% off sales of new games as well. I know one of the Gundam games went for like 70% off about a month after release because they took too many of them in, and the same's occurred with the new imas game -- 50% off for the 'limited edition' with special downloadable song-card available for only the initial lot. WTF were they thinking trying to sell 80,000 copies of a mini-sequel to a game that only sold 80k to begin with.

@Evil J: Actually, that's not quite true -- I worked in retail management for quite a few years (I even ran a game store for 3 years ... anyone remember Funcoland?), and I was a merchandising manager for another big box store. Oftentimes, stores get identified as "clearance" stores, because they happen to sell that kind of product at a better rate. Perhaps that Target was identified as such.

Crackdown at $60 bucks was an alright game, until I discovered it supported Live! co-op, than it became amazing. At $15 if you haven't bought it and have a friend who has a 360 and a Live! account pick up two copies one for you and one for your friend. This is a fun game, but in co-op mode it absolutely shines!
My roommate got a 360 last summer and I used gamefly to get a 2nd copy of Crackdown. Than we dragged his TV down out of his room and set it up in the living room next to my TV and played co-op for the better part of a month.
The expansion/add-on you can download over live (it does cost) is pretty fun too. It adds some additional weapons and vehicles and some different game/driving modes. It really is IMHO one of those games thats okay by itself, but in co-op it's an absolute blast.

Target clearance game fairly often, and they do markdowns almost every other monday. $14.98 is pretty much as low as most 360 games go. At different Targets at the moment you can find good deals on Blue Dragon, Rainbow Six Vegas 1, Viva Pinata Party Animals, and Stranglehold as well. Stores do this for accounting purposes. To write down the value of inventory, you must actually offer the inventory for sale at the claimed price. So Target is likely booking down the value of its Crackdown discs from $59.99/unit to $19.99/unit to knock down its ending inventory value somewhat, and to do that, they have to dump their units. The easiest way to do that is to send it to the store nearest to the warehouse where the products are stored.

That's actually a pretty accurate description of the game, but that is precisely why it is so good. It is definitely a must buy for the 360 IMHO.

@Spoony Bard: The game had a story to it but there was very little cut scenes. If you look back in your past of all the video games you enjoyed, do you really remember there being huge spectacular stories? I sure don't. It is a great VIDEO GAME, it won't compete with a GTA story or even Saints Row.
If you like Sandbox games and have a friend to play online with, this game is damn near perfect.

that's not as bas as the Atari Video Game burial of 1983... [en.wikipedia.org] They actually produced more copies of the game than 2600's sold at the time. They took the surplus back, and burried them in a landfill in New Mexico.
I'd bet that the supply showed there is from a complete local area. Big box stores often times bring back all the shelf stuffers to one particular store in an area to sell it in bulk. Not all stores have the same amount of clearence items. Usually the "bigger" stores have them.

It's a shame, crackdown was so much more than the Halo 3 Beta 'carrier' program.
I traded it in as well as I am poor and thirst for new games that minimum wage just cannot afford on it's own but I beat the game and played many a night of Co-op. No co-op game is anything like it and I fully recommend crackdown as a budget title.

I bought Crackdown used for $15 back a few months ago. I enjoyed it a lot, and will likely play it again. The skill/levelup system is unique for this type of game. And there's definately a challenge there.
This game was unfortunately cursed as the "Halo 3 Beta Game". In talks with several GameStop clerks around my local area, they all had the same experience. Frat boys and "hardcore gamers" getting pissed when they tried to sell their used Crackdown copies after the Halo 3 beta.
You don't get squat for it used because of that initial influx. And now they're drowning in copies.

This is not a local deal, Crackdown is being clearanced from Target nationally for $14.98, along with Stranglehold. Not all Targets have the price marked down that far yet and might still have both games for sale at $29.99.
While this isn't limited to that one Target...that's a hell of a lot of copies of the game for one store.

I'd actually purchase this, is this anywhere near Philly? I enjoyed the Crackdown Demo a lot

Wow, that's worse than all the copies of DefJam Icon and Spiderman 3 for the PS3 that we have that we'll never sell. Then again, they are still $30 and will probably sell like hotcakes once they reach $19.82 and get bargain binned.

I wonder if there is any way that that ad can be price matched @ my local retailer? (No Target in our town)

@Brianemone: You sir (and apparently the vast majority of the gaming community) surely must be smoking the crack.
I thought Crackdown wasn't even worth the $8 I spent to rent it, and subsequently returned after a day for Overlord; a sage decision in retrospect.

Crackdown was my first 360 game.
And boy was it awesome. Loved it all. You owe it to yourself to buy this for $15 dollars....

Good lord! Someone make a disc throwing machine and open a shooting range already! (after a copy has been given to every human being on earth, of course, along with 2 back ups, and a fourth should they decide to eat it.)
Was a fun game though, heh.

Wow that is an amazing amount of one game. And a great deal indeed. You might say I'm crazy but I enjoyed playing Crackdown much more than that other game that was included as a beta key (yes, including the full version of both games).

I really wish something like that happened at any of my local retailer for a game as good as Crackdown. The closest thing I saw with that many copies was for Jackass and really. Who the hell wants a Jackass game.

Maybe Target found them on the street and decided to make a quick profit?
haha! That sucks, there is no way they can see all of those. TO the Average gamer Clearance=bad game

What Target is that? "Local" tells me absolutely nothing. :(
Or is it at every Target? That'd be equally sad.

Crackdown was good. At $15 bucks though it's great.
Can't wait for APB or whatever the Crackdownish MMO is gonna be called.

I just tried my local Target, and no luck. Considering the string of bad luck I've experienced today, it did not come as much of a surprise.

Sorry, I meant to provide Kotaku with more information on where I found these. I'm the submitter of this photo. I found this ginormous stack of Crackdowns at the Target in Long Beach. Good luck to everyone trying to get a copy! I just bought like 7 of them for me and co-workers.

They keep getting marked down at GameStops as well. From like 19.99 used to 16.99. And from 30.00 new to 25.00.

I enjoyed Crackdown, mostly because I borrowed it from a friend and didn't pay shit to play it. I would have never paid more than $10 for it and sure as fuck wouldn't have bought it at $60 to play a beta, which the only reason that game got as much notoriety as it did. Detach the Halo 3 beta from it and no one cares. Even someone from Microsoft said they chose Crackdown to attach a beta key with because they wanted to see how it would affect "a game no one was going to buy". But anybody who says this was a great game or whatever I think is trying to rationalize paying $60 for a beta. Sure, it was fun, but Saints Row was a lot better when it comes to GTA rip-offs.

Crackdown was a good game by itself, and as much as I enjoyed the many hours I spent kicking Latino gang members in the face, the game was sadly overshadowed by the Halo 3 beta buy-in that came packaged with it, which is probably the root cause of this stock pile. Someone expected a mad rush on Halo beta purchases, and supply > demand here. Take a good look kids. Here's your economics lesson for today: Saturation.
