Topps Launches Candy Coated Speed Racer Web Game
Posted by Flynn De Marco at 5:00 AM on March 19, 2008
Topps, the purveyors of candy treats have just launched a little racing web based game to help promote the upcoming Speed Racer Movie, Speed Racer Candy Tracks The game is exactly what you'd expect from the title, a racing game with a Topps candy tie in. The tie in coming from a massive onslaught of in game advertising for all of their products from Bazooka gum to Ring Pops. The tracks may be pink and candy coated but this Flash game already seems ten times more interesting than the bore fest that is Speed Racer the Video Game. I'm sorry, but having to tack on "the Video Game" at the end automatically puts it on my "don't buy list".

Candy coated just like the movie. I still can't believe they made a Mach 6. And although John Goodman seems like a good Pops, he wasn't as chunky, just a little more built and had some fighting scenes in the cartoon. I don't think John Goodman can fight worth a dime. Also, the cartoon wasn't as seizurific as the movie is going to be, not even the 1994 reincarnation. IMDB says they're going to release a new TV series as well, called "Speed Racer: The Next Generation," and I can't wait to see how they're going to destroy that too.
Damn Hollywood they need to try to stay as true to the series as possible, including character likeness and setting too.

@SnakeCL: I'm going to have to respectfully disagree with you, cause every time I see that trailer I'm completely blown away.
At first I actually would of agreed with you, with the whole "vomiting in the mouth" bit. But after I saw it a few times I realized there really is no other way to do a live action Speed Racer, with the anime explosion sort of visuals.
The only other direction they could of gone is the realistic period piece, which would of just been silly once you factor in Racer X.
Besides, the Wachowski brothers haven't made a movie I haven't yet...that isn't a sequel.

Now if it was called Speed Racer: The Interactive Entertainment Experience Edition, I bet you'd be singin' a different tune!

@Modus_Operandi:
If anything started the brutal sodomization of the Speed Racer franchise, its definitely the abortion of a movie. Holy crap does it look bad.

This game sucks, just as hard as we suck on candy! The car drifts too much, and you don't have any control. I hope the movie and the video game aren't as bad.

What about Speed Racer the Video Game: The Video Game? A complex control scheme allows you to manipulate the digits of your avatar who is playing Speed Racer the Video Game. I hear it's supposed to be pretty realistic.

So this is the choice we as faithful fans and nerds get? A boring homegenous racing "the movie game" or a flash based candy ad hell. Wonderful. It always brings a tear to my eye having to watch a beloved childhood memory brutally sodmized.

Just so you know, registration isn't required. You need to get a User Name and Password to keep track of high scores, but you can skip the lengthy part of the form if you just want to play.
