VGChartz reports only 334,000 copies of UT3 sold for PS3 worldwide.

We haven't seen any PC details, but I find it hard to believe they have sold 600,000 copies world wide. Especially since it hasn't shown up on any of the NA PC top 20 lists.

Epic has mentioned SHIPPING 1 million units. Shipping and selling are 2 different things.

@ReyDEEEEZY: Actually if you have the PS3 version you should go and take a look at [www.ut3mod.com] because they have over a hundred mods already. Most of these mods are cooked from classic maps. I have played recently through a bunch and it was mighty fun with a mouse/keyboard on the PS3. The only pain is you have to load them one at a time using a USB key, so keep your PC close to your PS3.

Unfortunately, Kotaku got this one wrong...because the original source got this one wrong by confusing "shipped" with "sold".

Here's the actual quotation from the Epic officer, reported within the linked article:
"Unreal Tournament 3 for the PC and the PS3, have now shipped over a million units total. While it may seem the PC market is slowing as indicated by MPD [sic] sales for this title, that is not the case internationally, where PC sales continues strong in a number of markets.

"As we expected our European PC sales of Unreal Tournament 3 are outpacing North America and overall the title is turning out to a success. Later this year, we are scheduled to launch the Xbox 360 version of Unreal Tournament 3 and expect it to perform equally well."

In other words, Epic is only saying, once again, that UT3 has *shipped* more than a million copies. The difference between "shipped" and "sold" can be huge, 40-50% or even more. Given that the PS3 version of UT3 has still only sold about 350,000 copies worldwide (according to sales data available through VG Charts), and the fact that UT3 isn't even in the *Top 20* of NA sales according to NPD's generous (heh) new policy of releasing extended PC data...I think we can be reasonably sure that the game overall hasn't sold more than 500,000-600,000 copies even with high PC title sales in the European market. And even that number is generous, unfortunately.

It may have had a slow start and Newer IP's have rocked the charts for months but It made it. It may not be the powerhouse it used to be but its still a fun yet point less game. I love the game either way.

Honestly, I have not been paying much attention. I've had too many other games and house remodeling taking up my time, and probably haven't touched UTIII since late January or early February, and since the last time I did play I hadn't tried any mods yet. I will be getting some later though and if there is anything that stands out as excellent I'll be sure to let ya know.

It's sucks that I don't play it as much as I thought I would, I do enjoy the game. I've just got COD4, Mass Effect, and many, many others to keep my time. (RPG's suck time away like crazy).

Back on topic I bought UT 99/2k4 and skipped 3. Why?

A) The game sucked hard and felt like it was Unreal Championship 3 (Made for the consoles).

B) Backlash at epic over the Gears of War port and lack of support / response. It's one thing for your game to be buggy but to completely ignore the problem and community like Epic did is not winning you any fans.

I used to think Epic was the best developer on earth because they made solid games and supported them. Silly me.

There's still no one playing it online. In Australia at least, I can't log on and have my choice of DM, TDM, CTF, VCTF or Warfare, because there's usually only one server with people on it, and I have to play whatever the hell they're playing. Either that or there's no servers.

It's a good game, just that it's incredibly difficult to actually shoot someone with anything but a shock combo. Because rockets and link plasma and flak move so slow compared to the running and dodging speed, you've got about a million years to dodge anything sent at you. As a result you usually end up getting shot in the back by a third man in, or the third man in will come steal your kill.

Overall the game just feels 'fiddly'. It doesn't have that grounded sensation to movement like Quake 3 and UT99 had. The physics feel inconsistent. I'm not even sure what I mean by that but I just want to say it. The weapons feel weak, most of the maps the game shipped with are poorly designed for deathmatch - they're too complicated. They might look pretty but I can't fucking tell what's going on. There's too much clutter, most of the time a duel is just dodging around like an idiot until one of you gets caught up on a piece of environment you didn't see due to poor lighting and takes a flak shell to the face.

Sure, all the static-mesh clutter and dim lighting shows off the engine real nice, but I'm trying to have a deathmatch here, you know?

The game is still fun though. But it's not a deathmatch classic, and it's not going to last very long. People won't be playing it next year, unless the mod community can release some utterly spectacular maps very shortly.

Improved match making? Saving films of matches? dude, PCs still kill consoles in terms of online matchmatching, Live included. As a matter of fact, Live's structure IS a PC structure with less customization and optimization. If making videos of matches is a godsend then explain to me how we've been watching Quake III and UT fan-made videos online for the last decade?

I think alot of people are waiting to get a new PC to play UT3, such as myself, because any lag at all makes it not fun. You pretty much need 50 FPS to even stay in the game, and running a game at low-detail/low-res, isn't all that great. Wait till the nVidia 8800 cards really drop in price.

I only bought my PS3 a week ago while in Singapore and picked up UT3. Like many I'm an old school UT PC player and quite frankly UT3 sucks. I mean it looks awesome, but the gameply just don't feel right. It's also bloody hard to find a decent online game as well (I'm in OZ). In the end I gave up and fired up the 360 for some COD4 goodness.

I don't have a PC, so i got the ps3 version to get my UT fix. I definately have a few issues with it, but it's still really fun though basically the same game that it was back in 2003. A simple patch would take care of my issues (can't see ping in game, custom maps needs to be DL'd manually, voice chat is broken, no text chat).

Just stop playing it. The gameplay is not shit. I bought this around December, and haven't stopped playing since. The fact that you think everybody shoots random rockets at you is just silly. This is a spastic game, it may seem random but it isn't. If you get good practice you'll just have to shoot 1 or 2 rockets to get the kill. Besides there's plenty of more weapons that can easily beat those rockets.

Having said that, if Epic was going to waste enough time doing the campaign, they might've as well put some decent story line and not just random offline bot matches.

Hopefully, the PC UT3 community starts to grow in the coming months.

Shows the PC is dead and or become a casual gaming platform. I believe the 1 million number was "sold" as in sold to retailers. Either way, 1 million copies for a "big" named title like UT III over the course of 3 months on two platforms is pretty weak. It'll be interesting to see how it sells on the 360 when it eventually gets released. COD4 for life...

I bought it and played it only once. Epic needs to get with the times and give us some decent netcode. Rocket monkeys won't notice a difference, but for hitscan players, having to lead your shots sucks. I'm sure it's great on LAN, but with the fast-paced gameplay even a 30ms ping suffers from lag.

Epic management just dropped the ball big time with UTIII, plain and simple. They can have major sales on consoles and Gears of War is proof of that. Other FPS were having major sales on PC's at that time also.

@ 7ucky: Well, I've always been a Quake fan right from the early days. but I have to say in the end this iteration won me over. When you say the first 2, I'm assuming you mean the story based releases Unreal 1 & 2 [not the Unreal Tournament versions].

If you are looking for something like U 1 & 2 you're in for a bit of a dissapointment. There is a story, but I'm fucked if I know what it was...It's basically a seies of bot populated maps strung together. Now I bought this game on the strength of Mark Rein's comments that Epic had included a single player campaing because less than half the people that buy UT actually play MP/online. Now, as Unreal 2 [didn't like 1 much] is still one my favourite games of all time, I could'nt wait to get my hands on it. To say I was dissapointed...Well, I ploughed on with the SP campaign and ended up quite enjoying it, although if you're looking for an immersive story line you are prob' best off with Sesame Street...

COD4: In-depth leveling system with a wide variety of weapon upgrades, AMAZING single-player campaign.

TF2: Not much is changed, it's classic Team Fortress, but with that unique cartoon artstyle.

@7ucky: I'm playing the PS3 version. I have UT Game of the Year edition still installed on my PC along with UT2k4 and UT2k3 in a box somewhere. I really like UTIII on PS3. It's the epitome of twitch shooters. It runs great and provides intense FPS action and the vehicles are awesome. M/KB support is a welcome addition but PS3 has splitfish support which is great once you adjust it to your liking. I've ranted about this enough. I just think the game needed better marketing. I remember it arrived and some people didn't even realize it and they were waiting for it.

Half of the Top 10 PC best-sellers sold less than 300k copies. A console game wouldn't even register with those numbers. Even adding digital purchase, I doubt they would sky-rocket. So yes, there is a lack of paying customers on the PC side.

Look here and compare. It seems clear where the money is: WoW, The Sims and consoles.

I've never understood this mentality of "not offering anything new" that's like the latest catch phrase to justify an opinion. Could you or anyone else explain to me what Halo 3 added new to the FPS genre? How about CoD4? TF2? None of the mentioned titles redefined the FPS genre. CoD4 adds some interesting achievements, classes and weapon loadouts but how is that new? Other FPS games have offered these years ago.

It bothers me that Epic Released UTIII on PC and PS3 with little to no marketing muscle at the worse time of the year at a time when the PS3 userbase still wasn't as large as it could have been and people look at UTIII like it's a bad game.

If epic would have just made UT2004 with UEIII graphics people would have bitched that it was just UT2004 repackaged. UTIII arrived on PS3 also at a time when fanboy PS3 rant was at an all-time high. It doesn't matter what Epic would have done differently, UTIII could have been UT2k4 reborn for the masses and people would have hated on it because it was on PS3. But had it debuted on 360 all of a sudden UTIII is a great game. StarCraft II could be announced exclusive for the PS3 and people will hate on it because it's on PS3.

UTIII is one of the best FPS games we've gotten this generation so far. It offers great stages, great graphics and gameplay, awesome weapons and vehicles and mouse/keyboard and mod support. It just so happens that it's exclusive on PC and PS3 (right now) and it has gameplay that is too fast for the "slower" crowd can't fathom.

We'll see if its a powerhouse or not after it comes out on the 360. Honestly PC FPS games on the same shelf as UTIII are on consoles and dont have much place on the PC anymore. The PS3 is a place for Playstation gamers (YES I STATE THE OBVIOUS) right now and UTIII is more the style of a 360 gamer.

Fast action on the consoles due to ease of playing and games with more tactics like COD4 are much better on PC due to more buttons. Im not a PC gamer aside from RTS and a few gems here and there and I can tell that. What I dont get is how FEAR was adapted better to the 360 than COD4 was. Still excellent and minor differences but COME ON I CANT LEAN?

That what I got for playing a PC demo. Anyways on the 360 UTIII will sell alot if the timing is good.

This and Guildwars w/Eye of the North expansion have been my worst purchases in the last 6 months. I think I uninstalled both from my PC within a week. I then rented the PS3 version to see if things were more exciting on the console side of things only to find it uglier and still no fun. What the hell happened to Onslaught mode?!

I am guessing this has to do with the fact that it really wasn't that great of a game. It's a multiplayer game mostly and it didn't offer anything new. The level design for some maps is becoming outdated and character design was really clutter. The whole game had too much visual noise. It's like they just decided to normal map anything with a surface. When you have COD4 and TF2 offering simple and well balance gameplay, although different that UT3, I really didn't feel like playing the game after a week from buying it.

PC community has pretty much given up on UT3, other than using it as a free mod engine... the fact the designers made the choice to once again remove assualt mode, even after the massive backlash and poor sales of UT2003 when they decided to do the same thing, you cant remove a core gametype and expect the public to be happy, especially when you add a new one in its place and claim thats the reason why... warfare aka exactly the same as onslaught with the new pointless orb system, is not as fun as people where hoping... im guessing the sales show this

1. Yes online gaming on the PC is larger than console gaming. Considering it has about a decade long head start thats to be expected. Nevermind the fact that this current gen of consoles is the first when all offer some form of online play. But more and more online play is becoming something that is a given on consoles.
2. The discussion wasnt about PC gaming. It was about UT3's low numbers which I attributed somewhat to the lack of paying customers on the PC side. That still holds. And saying blah blah blah doesnt change it.

I can't say that the new version sucks. It doesn't.

It's a solid game with awesome fast paced action. It's beautiful. It scales amazingly well. It's really fun.

It's a shame it hasn't caught on more.

But at the same time, I haven't played since december either.

It'll join that special place in my heart I have for Quake 2 LMCTF and Quake 3 Arena.

Good times we're had, time to look to the future.

Mmm....think I'll go play a bit of COD4 or TF2.

I think Epic simply underestimated the number of people who wanted UT 1.5 with kickass graphics and vehicles...as somebody who barely played 2004 thats what UT3 is to me, personally. I enjoy it, though I haven't been online much yet (PC version).

I think, like all Epic games, mods will help give it legs as well.

UT3 is a fast paced fragfest made for those with a retro taste. I like it, but I know people who resent it for its speed. Most shooters are so much slower in comparison and I guess that drives people away. UT3 is too fast to be as accessible as other fps.

@CanaryWundaboy: that seems to be the popular opinion but I'd argue that CoD4 as popular as it is has NOT completely dominated the time of arm chair champions everywhere. I have a number of servers on my favorites list for Warhawk and most of them are always full. Everything from Zones (lots of Zones) to Dogfight and Team Deathmatch. UTIII is similar but to a lesser degree. When I bootup UTIII I can always find people online to play and plenty of people playing ranked matches. The problem is, if I host a match, I usually get a lot of dual analogers and maybe one k/b and mouser. I'm using the splitfish so between me and the mouser, we're raping the other guys. It's not even close.

the point is, UTIII is still great fun. I wouldn't take an elitist douche mentality to UTIII because it doesn't do CoD4 or UTIII justice. Personally, I prefer UTIII, because of the weapons and the vehicles.

Yeah it really comes down to the deal with Sony and the exclusivity window...

Rein and Co. simply gambled that a PS3 exclusivity window either would be a big enough event that it would offset the lack of a 360 release. or perhaps Sony dangled enough incentives to offset the potential losses in earnings.

Would Epic have gone for a simultaneous release if they had a chance to do-over? I think it could have meant a million before the holidays. And although the 360 version should be a decent performer, it's literally last year's game.

Just because UT3 didn't sell well, it doesn't mean there's some sort of crisis. I too agree they should have just released it on 360, as we all know 360 owners love their first person shooters. The time frame they released UT3 for PC was pretty bad, i believe it was November, same month CoD4 came out.

The PS3 version is probably the version with the most amount sold however. I've heard the online numbers on the PC version aren't great.

I think Epic's problem is they were banking on user created maps selling the PS3 version. Which in a way, it has but the game itself isn't as good overall as its predecessor UT 2004.

I just hope they can nail the user created content on the 360 version. Its totally possible but Epic have to develop a secure system. I'm sure they did for PS3 but with user created content, there will always be a chance for someone to exploit and they are going to need to convince Microsoft that won't be the case.

This isn't any indication that the franchise is not a powerful one anymore. I just think it's a telling sign that the market is simply saturated with games of the FPS genre and that no matter what type of heritage or prestige an IP holds, innovation needs to be met.

Unreal Tournament 3 is a great game, but it's a throwback to a game and genre that doesn't need a throwback right now, because what it's looking for is more an evolution than to bring it back from life support.

And the PS3 just does not have the installed base or the online support necessary to make this game big. Even with H3, Gears, and COD4, UT3 would still have a following on the box. Its the home of shooters afterall. I think this less indictative of the UT franchise and more indictaive of the state of PC online gaming and the low install base for the PS3.

Poor UTIII. 1 million is nothing to scoff at necessarily, but across both platforms, that is pretty crappy. I bought it day one on the PS3. I like the game, but as a couple of people have mentioned, COD4 is taking all my multiplayer time, and then all the single player experiences are sapping time away as well.

They wanted to, but Microsoft won't let them make user created mods available to 360 owners, and they don't want the 360 version to feel gimped compared to the PS3/PC versions, so they're trying to work something out with MS so that people can have those user created mods.

I bet this figure would be much higher had they released it for the 360. Not only does the 360 have a higher install base, but a much higher software attach rate.

I really think this has little to do with the 360. The fact of the matter is that the FPS genre has changed drastically and Unreal Tournament III has not adapted to those changes.

The days of fast past frag fest are no longer. The FPS has actually grown into a far more sophisticated genre.

I'm not saying that Unreal isn't fun or great, because it is...however its hardly anything new. If you refuse to change your product eventually you are going to see a drop in sales.

COD4 has dumped on every other multiplayer game this year, Halo, Warhawk, you name it. Why should an outdated franchise like UT3 be any different?

Well the old Unreal 2004 was very scalable to many lower end computer systems. UT3 needs dual core to look nice and I am sure not many people are or have upgraded. Plus many windows users probably have 360s

This is pretty funny actually. Mark Rein's hubris did not do Epic any favors. At first he said the reason Epic did not simultaneously release UTII on the 360 was because Xbox Live was to restrictive to it's modding community, but it seems now that UTIII needs the 360 more than UTIII needs to appease its small community of modders. Instead of putting a game on a system with a more proven consumer base, Epic decided to appease the niche part of its community, which in all likelihood pirated their copy of UTIII. Smooth move Mark...smooth move.

@7ucky: UT3 feels alot like the original UT, I loved UT99 and was very dissapointed by the 2003/4 iterations of the franchise (they lost that classic UT 'feel'). However UT3 is fantastic!

Really happy with my purchase, twitch gaming at it's best. The only downside is the ripper didn't make a comeback which is a shame :(

it was a good game, bought it day one and later traded it in for a copy of folklore.

the problem was it didn't have the 'Wow!' factor 2004 did. Looked great, and played decently, but just wasn't the same.

I think they need to get off this art style they seem to have started with gears, and get back to something less wannabe 40k and more 'galactic war turned game show' like UT 1 and 2k3/4.

maybe if the game didn't suck it would've sold more.
its waaaaay too niche in that you can't jump in and have a good time. everything is ridiculously fast, everyone jumps firing random rockets everywhere (sorry, in the -general direction- of everyone).

even the bots are cheap on the lowest difficulty. they rush your side, you flank them perfectly and bam they all turn at the same time and start shooting you without you even revealing youself.

its just gotten stupid, and its sad cuz i wanted to like it. the vehicles are awesome and the game looks amazing. but the gameplay is just shit.

Maybe they should have advertised it a bit more. Also coming out right after everyone had done their Xmas purchases was just plain dumb (Dec 12th). It should sell better considering it's the only shooter on current gen consoles on which you can use mods that are FREE. The replay value only goes up with time. Plus it does mouse and keyboard on the PS3 !

A quality fast-paced online-heavy FPS? Why would you make this game and NOT put it on the one place FPS players tend to hang out.

It'd be like making a Slurpee machine and NOT putting it in a convenience store and then complaining no one's buying.

They released it at a bad time. during the holidays when so many awesome original IPs were out, this old franchise just got put aside for later. It would be like if smash brothers released 4 more games in the next 4 years with little new content and planned to released it during the holidays, people would rather spend their money on something new and fresh.

These numbers are from before the Euro launch are they not? So they get at least another million in the EU (esp on PC) and they have the 360 version coming in the fall.
