Valve Price, Show Off Remnants Of The Orange Box
Posted by Luke Plunkett at 9:30 PM on March 14, 2008
What you already know is that Valve is splitting the Orange Box up on April 9. The PC version, anyways. It's had a good run as a compilation, but there's money to be made separating the HL2 episodes from the multiplayer shooter from the award-winning mind-fuck, so it's time for the games to say their goodbyes. What you didn't know was how much the individual titles would cost, or what they'd look like freed from that awful "greatest hits" boxart. So arm yourself with these facts: Portal will be $US 20, Team Fortress 2 $US 30 and the HL2 "Episode Pack" (which includes Episodes 1 & 2) $US 30. As for the individual covers, well, those are below.

@kojirodensetsu: Imo individual content bought all together should cost 1.5x more than the bundle.
On what basis do you form that opinion?

@Brine: I expected them to cost more if you bought them all individually but not by this much. If you add the prices of all the Orange Box content with it's sold separately prices it amounts to around $100, twice of what the Orange Box costs (I didn't know how much Half life 2 costs nowadays but Amazon says $20). Imo individual content bought all together should cost 1.5x more than the bundle. This is 2x.

To all the people bitching about the prices, the whole point is that you were getting a great deal with the Orange Box, and that it was most definitely cheaper than if you bought the games separately.
Honestly, how are you surprised that they cost more individually?

@infi: yeah i remember that too it only gets cheap with a rare price drop or if it becomes a best seller/greatest hit and everyone already has it Then the game gets cheaper.

Will these have instruction manuals?
I mean, other than the official automatic sentry gun owner's manual:

@Knasher: Why don't you get that you get them for free? You're not "buying them twice", when you're paying LESS then if you bought them once, but individually, you're getting a bargain.
No wonder Blizzard's presentation on game design always featured a lot about player psychology.

TF2 should be $10.. it's optionless, and not that expansive (As of now, anyways)
Portal also should be $10.
However, the episode pack could get away with being $40.
As usual, valve overprices their crap to trick you into buying "Packs". They've been doing it since the beginning!
I also remember not too long ago when retail outlets were selling HL2 GotY for $30, whilst on Steam, HL2 by itself was being sold for $40.

It's a little late to split them up and sell each game seperate. By now the Orange Box will probably have a price drop of 10 bucks already, so it's really not worth buying it for a new cover. You can always print a new one out.
(When I click 'submit comment', nothing happens! Anyone else got that?)

@Astrofox:
The rupee also happens to be the currency of several countries, including India.
And yes, retail games cost around 1000 bucks here, from the Orange Box to Crysis.
Have to do that if they want to compete with the pirates.

I bought portal on its own on steam. I am not a shooter fan (unless its spaceships or 2d variety ala contra). Portal was the only thing I wanted because it did not play like a shooter. Its a maze/puzzle game in the guise of a shooter.
Anyone who has not picked up portal in any shape or form MUST pick it up (as long as you like puzzle games).

Meh. Not really saving a lot of money, i guess if you want only 1 of them then its good. If say, you want TF2, Portal (like me) you're probably better off just buying the Orangebox.

this is the same as the steam price plan. Makes sense if you look at the work that went into each product. Portal may last 3 hours but it took a lot longer to make (not including challenge missions). I've already clocked 50+ hours on TF2 which is a lot more than many other games so thats easily worth 30. Episode 2 was very epic and lasted around 4-5 hours. So all in all the packaged box was a steal but now the products are available but at true value.

So i guess it will be $=€ here in Germany. I got the orange box for about 30€... So why should anybody pay 20€ to get portal if he can buy the whole package for 30€? Makes no sense to me...

i don't know if this is a stupid question or not, but I've not been able to find the info anywhere: will the orange box package still be available after they've split, or is this a replacement for buying them all together?
this makes a big difference to whether or not I need to crack out next month's luxury budget somewhat early!

If they split the games up for retail, now the retailers have to make money as well as increased manufacturing, shipping, and marketing costs. I understand why they priced it the way that they did. If you only want Portal or TF2, $20 is better than $50. But if you want the whole package you would do better buying the compilation.

I want them to split them all up on the 360 too. It'd be 1000 achievements per game! I'm such an achievement whore. :( I can't help it.

I've already got the orange box so I guess its pointless saying this now, but as a loyal fan of all things hl I have bought all of their games up till now so being forced to rebuy hl2 all over again was a bit of a kick in the teeth (and don't give me that gifting crap I try not to associate with ppl who dont already own valves catalogue). So I really cant understand why they don't offer a pack with just the stuff I don't already own (tf2 + hl2:ep2 + portal). Now to add insult to injury they "split" up the games by offering ep1+2 together. They really are insistent that u buy everything twice arn't they. Whats next, ep3 released in pack which can only be bought with together with every other game in the steam store?

These are dirt cheap for a €uropean :)

I bought 'The Orange Box' a week after it released for 1000 rupees. Comes down to roughly 25 dollars.
But ofcourse, the packaging and the manual are crappy to the max.

Anyone who thought Valve wouldn't try and turn a huge profit on what has proven to be a wildly popular series of games needs to stop and think for a bit.
TF2 is talked about everywhere. People LOVE it. The praise for Portal is still coming from every orfice of the internet. And Half-Life 2 has already established itself. They'd be nuts to not try and cash in on the insane success.

The prices seem pretty high considering Portal + TF2 is the same price as the Orange Box which comes with Portal, TF2, Half Life 2, and the episodic content.

30 for just the one game seems a bit steep...i mean orange box is like £25 on pc, and £35 on 360 in the uk

So it's the same price as buying them individually on Steam. They should've been priced down there and certainly should be now. I think $10 and $20 for Portal and TF2 is much more reasonable. Despite not really wanting any of the HL2 games I ended up buying the Orange Box to get those two that I wanted just because it'd be silly to buy them separately.
