Which Controller Do You Brawl With?
Posted by Mike Fahey at 8:00 AM on March 11, 2008
The first thing that struck me as I started digging into Super Smash Bros. Brawl for my review, was the fact that this wasn't a game designed with the standard Wiimote controls in mind. The only time the motion sensing comes into play is when you shake the controller to activate your Smash Attack, and even then it's easier done with the control stick and a button. Me? I tried all the configurations, and finally settled with my trusty old GameCube controller. What's your weapon of choice?

Last night I fired up SSBB and holy crap its a lot of fun.
As to the controls: The Wii conbo was horrid, the classic controller was a bit better [my wife seemed to dig it] but I stuck with my wavebird, and it was fantastic.
It is my hope that Nintendo does us all a solid and puts in more support for the old GC /Wavebird controllers into future titles.
I wont bag on the Wii anymore, but I do find it really funny that the Wii's default controllers make this game much harder to play.

I just like the GC controller because it's what I'm used to. Shield mapped to 'Y' and Tap Jump off to account for shielding differences and easier short-hopping...after the tourney I'm going to Friday I might try another control scheme, but right now I need to focus on how to play the game, not what to play it with.

All of my friends insist on using a GC controller, but I prefer a Wiimote+Nunchuck, even though I have 2 GC controllers and my friends have another 4. I just like how the Wiimote+Nunchuck feel. Also, I only have one Wavebird, so the in front of the TV isn't over crowded.
Note: There was almost a casualty the first day we were playing Brawl, for a friend of mine leaned back while playing with a regular GC controller and pulled my Wii down to the ground. Luckily everything worked perfectly after I restarted the Wii.

I cant believe how much i love playing with JUST the wiimote. Everything is simplified down to an art form, and when i map the A button to grabs, its fantastic. The classic controller doesnt have good sizes on their buttons for smash, and its near impossible to do charged smash attacks with the nunchuk model. The Gamecube version is fantastic as usual, though the wiimote by itself is all I'll ever need.

cube pad, duh. no other arrangement is as precise, covers as many buttons, and is comfortable. Sidemote, eeew. So few reachable buttons, and no stick at all. Nunchuck, better, but the two buttons on the nunchuck itself are awkward. Plus there's only 4 easily reached buttons. Classic is second best. I have one for Contra lolz, but it's so TINY. Plus the D-pad and the left stick should be switched.

I tried the wii-mote nunchucks but I was kind of fumbling around with it.
And the GC controller did take a little getting used to at first but honestly became my favorite controller next to the dreamcast. And if you actually bought a second controller like the wave bird or the nyko controler for the GC the clacky issue wasdn't there.

I never understood the hate for the Gamecube controller. Friends of mine used to talk about how great the Dual Shock is/was
But you know, I really love the option for Classic/Gamecube controller support. I mean with Brawl, Mario Kart, Nights and probably a few more (anyone have a list?) that allow the Gamecube controller allows the developers to do what is best for the game.
Or they could go the DDG method and have a special controller plug into the Wiimote or DDR style using the GCN ports.
The Wii's biggest strength IMO is just how versatile it is.

@Shiryu:PS: Nintendo should really reissue the GameCube Joypad. I have 4, but theyre black... since they didnt deliver on several color Wiis from the get go, they may as well bring back the gameCube acessories in Wii White & Blue colors.
Well, they are still selling the Gamecube controller, in Platinum only. I have four 3rd party controllers which are darn close to the legit one.
I do have a Wavebird as well as two Mad Catz Microcon wireless controllers but I always go back to the wired ones. I guess I just love the rumble.
Today I played with my Spice controller while my sister played using the classic Indigo. We both agreed though that sadly the Analog sticks just aren't holding up. I haven't tried Classic but since I really only use that for N64 games, I don't think I'll try it just yet. Maybe when I get a party of people together.
I think when all is said and done I'll have more Gamecube controllers than I will Gamecube games. o.O

@AlexDitto: Thats actually my biggest problem with the controls, they arent infinitely customizable like was advertised. The 3 things i would want custom buttons for, i cant set. I would use the sideways wiimote, but you cant unbind up on the d-pad. It always has to be something, it cant just be "up" which is silly since you actually need a dedicated up button. With the chuck controls, waggle has to be smash or nothing. I would like to use it for grab, but thats not possible. Why? Then with cube controls, sure they are fine, but i would prefer to use d-pad for movement. Simple request, but again, not possible. I guess i just dont understand why if they realized the desire for customizable controls, why do it so half-assed? Just have a list of functions, then let you bind whatever button/input you want for it. Dead simple, since the days of the snes. Doesnt make sense imo. Overall a small complaint i know, but it is irritating none the less.

The Wiimote/Nunchuck combo suits me just fine. It takes a while to get used to using the triggers on the nunchuck so much but it becomes easy after some practice.
All of the control options work fine. It really depends on your own personal preferences. Competitive players have played so much Melee that it is simply too hard for them to break their habits to learn one of the other control schemes.

VC controller FTW... The classic form of the Super Nintendo controller (and analog placement that Sony used, mind) is by far the best design I've ever used. It's symmetrical and logical.
The gamecube controller is the worst controller in the history of controllers (XBox's big bertha coming in second, I'm only going by systems I've actually used so maybe the Jaguar was worst) The buttons just don't lend themselves well to a fighting game, or indeed to many games at all... The N64 was actually better with SSB than the gamecube was.

Posted 10:37 PM 19/3/08
I too am actually a bigger fan of a customized Wiimote/Nunchuck than I expected. Jump on all four D-pad directions and grabbing on C works wonders - D-pad jumping reminds me of C button jumping in the N64 game. Shake smash doesn't seem to be all that accurate, though, which is a shame. I can't seem to side-taunt all that well with 1+2, so maybe setting that to right on the D-pad or something would work...
But yeah, for some reason the Cube controller doesn't seem to work as well for Brawl as I thought it would, due to things like digital shielding and a slower pace in the fighting. On the Cube controller, it feels like I'm trying to move and react faster than I actually need to. If you can get yourself into the mindset that this is Brawl, not Melee, I think Wiimote/Nunchuck works perfectly well.

Wiimote/Nunchuk: the only control option Wii games should be offering. How can Nintendo expect third party developers to take Wii controls seriously when they don't even make the first-party houses use only proper Wii controls? This game could have been so much better, if only Sakurai had been forced to develop proper expressive motion control (as he clearly did not have the guts to do it without such prodding).

I've been experimenting with every controller for hours, delving deep into various configuration options. My biggest problem: I can't get used to use "up" for jump in this game. In a restricted fighter like street fighter or DOA, or whatever, up is fine, and I don't really get why but it just is for me.
In SSB* I can't get around properly with a dedicated jump button. I'm trying though. If it wasn't for that, my preferred controller would be the wii-mote alone. And yes, I played SSBB for literally thousands of hours with the gamecube controller. It doesn't matter though, I would rather use a new controller for the sake of being able to replace it easily.
So now I'm stuck on the wii-mote + nunchuck, using the "Z" button for jumping, basically the default controls with c and z swapped. But this is only a crutch until I can really get used to up for jumping in what is undeniably a platformer :P
As for the classic controller, that thing is an ergonomics nightmare. I simply cannot hold it and use all of the buttons without dropping it. The shoulder button positions make it impossible for me to use the analog stick and press the shoulder buttons at the same time, and who the hell wants to readjust their grip ever time you need to grab or hit the shield? I readjusted the controls to use mostly face buttons but there is still a need for 5 operating buttons: Attack, Special, Jump, Grab, Shield ... and only four face buttons. OH well. If it would let me do a+b for grab I'd be happy.
Anyway props to these guys for making the controls so configurable, and even cooler for letting me save my control scheme to my Wii-mote!

@Mr.SithNinja: Anyone else see the irony in people prefering the GC controller for the Wii's biggest title, when the Wiimote is the main driving force in sales for the Wii??
Considering that every review I've seen, including Crecente's mentioned that the GC controller was the superior method we're all aware of the "irony"...Of course why you would think that you would never need a GC controller when the system has 4 GC controller ports and 2 memory card slots I don't know, Nintendo isn't known for putting endless unused extra stuff on their systems like Sony. You could say that it was just for GC games, but then why not make the Classic Controller more GC-like, drop the ports and force us to all buy Classic Controllers? Nintendo knew going in this would happen with Smash and possibly other titles, hence those ports.

I think the problem is how many we, or at least I, want mapped. I liked having the
Y mapped for jump
A for attack
B for special
L/R for shield
Z for throw first, then hold for shield
Left hand for control stick
C for smash
With that control scheme, we had left index on shoulders, right index on Z, right thumb for B/A/Y and to go down to C stick, and left for stick. Since A, B, and Y were all close, moving from one to another was a simple slide.
In this one, there are no places to put a dedicated grapple and a jump button. The C button is an option, but too small, and sliding the left index does not feel intuitive. It may after some practice, but not yet. Using the control pad for dedicated smash MAY work, but that's a far slide for having no second hand to grip that controller steady. Then there's still no dedicated grapple. Of course, you could use DPad for grapple and stick to Waggling for the dedicated quick smash, but the waggling is not 100% where you want it.
S'why, so far, GC controller is winning. The SSBB controls are the same as Melee, much to the delight of fans and chagrin of the wiimote.

Z=block, C= grab, A= attack, D-pad down = special, B = jump. A+B= throw
Turned off tapping up = jump and turned on wiimote waggle= directional smash attack.
Seems to work well so far. I think a bit more practice and I'll be fine.

That's true. I put the "yet" part in because I figured people would jump on my comment going "well it just came out! I'm sure 90% of us will have it soon!"
Honestly I've never been into SSB because I really don't like 4-player platform brawlers with powerups. I think Brawl looks very cool and I think it's awesome for those who get it, but... (gotta be careful here) for the combination of game type I'm not into, and the fact I've gotten sick of most of the characters after seeing them shoehorned into every unrelated game possible and lost the nostalgia factor for it, I'm not getting it either unless some great revelation moves me to.

Had a PS2 last gen, so I'm sticking with Wiimote/Nunchuck for now, tried looking for Gamecube pads but they're either: a) Used and when I say used I mean beat up and left to die; or b) Very high-priced for a last-gen controller (500 pesos around 50 bucks)
So I think I'll stick with what I have for a while, or at least until I find one of those Nyko wireless classic controllers (which are esentially Wavebird substitutes).

The cube controller is great for competitive brawlin', without a doubt. I can't imagine challenging anybody with anything else. Even the fork.
But i discovered that playing Subspace Emissary with the Wiimote alone is really awesome.
Since is a sidescrolling adventure, I really don't care much about shielding (my main problem with the wiimote), so i don't even touch that awful trigger.
And playing like that gives a very old school feeling to the game. You forget all that speech about games having to be "deep" and "cohesive" and you start kicking, and punching and beating the hell out of those enemies. With a friend.
Also, if you want to play with the remote, PLEASE, take of the jacket. No, not your jacket, the Wiimote jacket. It's just a pain in the ass.

I've got no problem using the Wiimote and Nunchuck. I just had to turn off the tap-up-to-jump feature, 'cause it's too easy to activate with the Nunchuck's analogue stick; other than that, it feels fine, and I'm pretty sure I'm no less capable of controlling the characters than I was with the 'Cube controller in Melee.

It's a classic game which they have hardly changed at all because they're scared to upset the cry baby fanboys, that is why it suits the old controller better.
If it had been a new game built with the new contoller/s in mind then it would work with them better.
It's pretty much the same game that was on the n64 and therefore it's obviously going to suit an old school control scheme better.
I don't see how that has any bearing on the overall success or not of the wii-remote and nunchuck.

I have tried all four methods and I like using the nunchuk/wiimote combo. Of course the Wavebird is more familiar but it is not as comfortable for me.
Having to push up to jump with the wiimote on it's side was just way too cumbersome for me and the classic controller did not work as well as the Wavebird for me.

Not to be a jerk, but can you imagine another company releasing a game that controls so poorly with the console's standard controller (the Wii remote) and not getting blasted for it? I mean, the game basically requires a classic or Gamecube controller, and yet no one's talking about the fact that a premier Wii title is painfully cumbersome on the console's native controller.
Imagine Halo needing a new gamepad, or Ratche controlling much more smoothly with a trackball. Microsoft and Sony would get torn up.

@AndrewDB: I have one of those, Andrew. It is indeed one fine joypad. Only drawback is that it eats batteries (my wiimotes got rechargable batteries) and the buttons do not fit games like F-Zero GX well. It would be the perfect pad if it had a recharge station and respected original GC button positions.
I also bought it for the PC, the cord version.

I said in the review post that I use the gamecube controller but mainly for the instant familiarity. I'll eventually try all the controls but from what I did with the Wiimote only, it works very well. Its just that I hate pressing up to jump in ANY fighting game. Which is why I turned that option off for the cube controls, I can't count the many times in melee that I try to clear house(spin swing) with Link only to do the aerial version instead. And at the arcades playing a 2-d fighter my guy instead of walking forward always jumps forward because what I perceive as forward seems to be diagonal up in reality. Of course I don't spend enough time at arcades to get this sorted out so its still a problem.
Here ends the writing of a dedicated Link user, anyone wanna swap codes? Mines in my profile(the wii number)

For the veterans:
Classic - these controls are the devil for everyone who has been used to a GC controller. The buttons are essentially rotated one spot counter clockwise. If you are going to play with this, reassign the scheme.
Wiimote - This style could be ok if not for a few flaws. One, your hands will be killing you after a serious ssb session. Two, pressing the trigger button while controlling movement with your left hand couldn't be more awkward
Wiimote+nunchuck - I think they were hoping for this to catch on and be the norm. Its unfortunate they you need to use both buttons on the nunchuck so frequently. This leaves generally unused fingers on your left hand feeling awkward and sluggish. The motion controls have potential, and there is always the chance to reset buttons according to comfort.
Gamecube - We all know and love this. If you want to try something new, try the nunchick combo, otherwise don't bother.

I don't understand a lot of the reviewers for this game. They must not know what it's like to have extremely quick and precise controls with a gamecube controller. Using IGN as an example, they obviously say the Gamecube controller is the best, but put the Wii remote sideways right under it. Huh? I used that, got used to it, and still hated it. Jumping is never as precise when you have to hit up, buttons get jumbled when trying to hit both to smash attack, the minus button is awkward to reach, throwing has to be assigned to some weird button or you have to shield+a, and you can't do all your taunts.
It's better for newcomers and those who don't see the need for precise controls, but for anyone wanting to play seriously, it isn't really an option.

I tried all the configurations, and truthfully, I've grown fond of the Sideways Wii-mote style. Since I don't have a Wavebird, all my GC controllers are wired, which is inconvenient. I really dislike the config with the Nunchuck (at least in its default, I haven't tried customizing it yet).
The GC controller has the advantage in its sheer number of buttons, and the fact that we've all been playing Melee for so long that we're used to it. But props to the Smash Bros team for making the game's controls infinitely customizable.
Seriously, the game is amazing. Got to go back to playing it now...

I haven't played my copy yet, I'm picking it up as soon as class is over, but I plan to try both the Gamecube controller and the Classic controller. So I'm not voting until I know which I like better.

Wavebird FTW! Seriously the GC controller was ass for every game but a small handful. Luckily Super Smash was one of them. And how can you go wrong with wireless. Before the 360 controller came out, the Wavebird was the best wireless controller out there. Real wireless too. Not that fake "Plug it into the Wii-mote" crap.

I don't own the game but I know what option I would use. I would use the GameCube controller option. Imo fighting games are better with a traditional controller rather than motion sensing.

Wow, I can't believe how few people do the sideways wiimote thing, that's my favorite! It makes the game feel like you're playing with an NES controller, which really adds to the experience for me, and it controls really well too.

I switch between my Wavebird and Wiimote. Kinda low on batteries now.

Gamecube controller. just works best since it's same button layout.
Wiimote control sucks.. but not the game LOL!

I haven't bought the game yet, but I plan on trying the Classic Controller first, then the Gamecube controller, then if none of those have the right feel, the Wiimote/Nunchuk.
Although, I do love the handles on the GC controller... and I think I still have a Wavebird around here somewhere...

I use that.
It acts like a Wavebird, weighs about half as much (even with the batteries in it), costs half as much, and kicks just as much ass. :] Tad small though.
I got mine at Circuit Shitty. Great buy for the Wii, especially for brawl.

Despite large hands, the classic controller is mad comfortable. Also, setting grab to Y is handy as hell.

I have a sneaking suspicion that the people not using the Gamecube controller are one's that didn't own on prior to owning a Wii.

Gamecube since it has rumble. I may go to Best Buy and pick me up a classic controller IF there are any available. [Or hell. a GC Controller]
