Why Was Gran Turismo 5 Prologue Download Borked?
Posted by Brian Ashcraft at 11:40 PM on March 28, 2008
Hey Sony, what gives?! Gran Turismo 5 Prologue was supposed to be ready to download in Europe starting, uhhhhh, yesterday. But it wasn't! Europeans who wanted to play it had to get off their arses and hoof it over to their neighbourhood game retailer and purchase the game on Blu-ray disc. Well, we wanna hear what went wrong. According to Sony:
Unfortunately due to some last minute technical difficulties, we were unable to publish the new content to the PS Store yesterday. We are working to resolve these issues and will let you know as soon as new content is posted.Guess that'll hafta do. Though something like "We fucked up" would've been a little more colorful.

@designerheadache: Mandatory 4GB?! According to the back of the box the minimum HDD space is 256kb, when the hell did that turn into 4GB?! I think my PS3 will be on over night to get the net play update.
*drops to knees in Nicholas Cage style pose from the end of The Rock, minus the shot of adrenaline to the heart bit, and screams*

@Dannon
Dont worry about not playing, you will be in the same boat as the rest of us. It has taken OVER 20 MINS to install, and at 3 HOURS AND STILL COUNTING, the required update for internet play has not finished installing and timed out at least 3 times.
At this rate the finished product will take forever to install!
Oh yeah, and its a mandatory 4 GB install to begin with, i dont remember that ever being mentioned either.....

I have my copy sat next to me on my desk, if only I could finish work right now *sighs* if only.... ah well, just over 5 hours to go before I'm able to slip the disc into the PS3 and then get the inevitable system upgrade that I probably don't yet have and then the GT5 update to download, I don't know if there is one as the game only came out today but it wouldn't surprise me and then I'll probably have to install the game to the HD in someway, hmm.... I wonder how much of what I just said I'll actually have to do

This game could very well own my soul. I loved the first GT and this one is shaping up to be amazing. The detail is amazing, look at the tool box on the ground in the background. Each tool is made of quality pixelated sexyness, who does that?

@designerheadache: Is that for the disc version or the downloadable version? I don't seem to remember my disc copy (from Japan) needing a 4GB install.
@dionion: God, what I bunch of assholes, amirite? I mean, the absolute nerve of those cockgobblers to run into some unforeseen, probably menial issue that would delay the PSN release probably a few day.
Now, without the sarcasm: Ex-fucking-cuse Sony for running into technical problems. God for-fucking-bid you having to wait an extra day or two for Sony to work it out.

This is seriously screwed. When they announced the game the PSN version was supposed to go on sale 1 day prior to the disc.
In reality, the disc has been in stores since last Friday and the PS Store has yet to be updated...
I wanted to get the downloadable version all along. Dearest Sony, you suck hard.

@ShirtGuyDom: No apology, no time-frame for the actual release of the game. Yes, I can see now that I should be jumping with joy.
I wouldn't complain as much but the European PS store's offerings have been consistently sub-par and basically they just messed up their biggest release of the year. I was naive enough to think they would be prepared for Gran freaking Turismo...

Hmm ok I just tried to comment with email since I'm having problems commenting here, but now it seems to work again... The email message has not shown up yet, no idea if it will :P
What I was going to say:
@ShirtGuyDom:
At least the PAL disc version had a mandatory install...
I don't know how big but it took quite a while.

@dionion: I thought the tone of the statement was rather apologetic. But I guess Sony needs to spell it out for people who can't read tone.
You're right, bitching does take the edge off.

Besides, I like to complain, it takes the edge of.

@ShirtGuyDom: "Unforeseen delays" can be anything... The game is ready, the disc has already shipped, so what's the problem causing the unforeseen delays?
Oh well, I'm done with this discussion.

I'm still waiting for the Samurai Warriors 2 Xtreme Legends exapnsion due out 9 days ago on Xbox LIVE, but is has been delayed "due to operational delays within Xbox LIVE Marketplace" (Microsoft's own words, though they have since altered it to say "due to techinical delays" to remove blame on themselves, but it's still there in Japanese - ***hole move). Unfortunately it's no Gran Turismo 5 or Halo 3 for that matter when the Heroic map packs were only hours late of going free. Try waiting 9 days and counting.
Demos on Xbox LIVE may be similarly affected such as Condemned 2, which was planned to be released over a week ago yet continues to be delayed. There are so many demos for recently released and upcoming multiplatform games on PSN yet to hit XBL.

@NeoStarr: Yeah, pretty much, it's essentially just a big demo with an official release and a price tag

I really need some clarification on something...
Why's it called "Prologue"? Is this like, a tease of what the next Gran Turismo will be?

@dionion: I'm not saying you should be jumping with joy, don't go down that "putting words in peoples' mouths" road. And again, the tone was apologetic. But again, I guess that's not enough for you. And would "we're sorry" really make you feel any better about the situation? As upset as you are, I don't see why it would.
Not prepared enough? Dude, seriously. You're talking a common problem (unforseen delays) and making it a bigger issue than it is. Get over yourself. This isn't due to a lack of preparation, and thinking it is is very naive.

Umm,putting it up on a large network,connectivity issues,etc. You can't just slap it on the server and say come get it guys.I mean think about it.It's a business and GT is a top tier name.Sony isn't going out of their way to make peoples lives hard or make them think they don't care about that part of the company.People who are posting those kinds of crazy comments on the official blog sound like spoiled children who didn't get their favorite toy for christmas. Technical issues happen all the time on all kinds of services.I agree Sony could have come out ahead and say we are having issues,please be patient sooner than they did.

The store has just been updated at last. The PSN price for GT5 is £25, so I'm glad I got it for £20 from retail yesterday.

A larger than normal download on a network that will see more traffic than usual.Any number of quirks can pop up in any ideal situation.Even the most prepared group can suffer from problems like this.
I do agree about communication and think you will start to see more of it.Well on the US blog anyways.Can't say for Europe.
At least they like my
idea of putting the firmware videos/instructions up on PSN.(so if you see that,I'm taking the credit..lol)

@enewtabie: "ou can't just slap it on the server and say come get it guys."
Errm why not? Unless Sony have bought some pile of w*nk off the shelf proprietary system for the PSN store, there shouldn't be much more than uploading a file to the server and linking it in, the shop and networks been built the files a file until it hits the PS3 and it unpacks it.
The main reason we're narked off is because Sony screwed up and didn't say anything, leaving us waiting around all night. If we'd have been told "It may not hit tonight" we could have got on with something else.

Bork bork bork! Swedish Chef rules. I really don't care to have 2 GT5's in my collection, so I'll wait for the real one. Unless you could trade the old one in, pay $20 and get the full version. I'd be okay with that!

I agree completely.Transparency should be there and it's not and the content is definitely lacking. I understand the reasons for that,but I think a layout for multiple store releases in a week should be setup and get it up to snuff. Release on a Monday,Thursday in a week and put up several PS1 titles,themes,trailers etc.The items that you have your hands on.Demos are a different animal I suppose.
I actually like the themes btw,so I'm glad something will be posted soon about how to set them up on the blog.

@enewtabie:
I think the lack of anything from SCEE is our biggest beef. Half the problem with last night was the fact that a late/non existent update is par for the course with SCEE so you check, find nothing and leave it until the next day. Unfortunately there was something worth downloading this time, so no one wanted to wait and risk an extra 5 minutes download time.
If they'd have given us good service in the past, I believe most of the new complainers would have twigged something was wrong last night and left it, we'd certainly be more appreciative of the fact the stores updated now.
Curse Sony for giving us something to play :)
