WiiWare Dated, Games Priced (For Japan)
Posted by Luke Plunkett at 7:30 PM on March 11, 2008
Nintendo have priced the first lineup of games for the Wii's WiiWare service, due to launch in Japan on March 25. While the most prominent title, Squeenix's Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles game, will cost 1500 points ($US 15), the other games are a little more affordable, ranging from 500 Wii Points (eg. Tenshi Solitaire) to 1000 Wii Points (incl. Dr. Mario, Pokemon Ranch). The full list of titles, for those of you who'll actually be partaking in the service come March 25, is at the link below.

If 1500p would cost $15 in Europe too, that FF -game would be pretty damn cheap. But 1500p costs 15e, which is about $23.

@roland13x: WOW. So cool that you not only read Kotaku, but post here as well. Good luck with being a launch title for such an eagerly expected service, I hope you do well!
and.....since you're already here....can you shed some light on how big your game for WiiWare is? Like how much room is it gonna take up on the "hard drive" of my Wii? Good Luck!

Oh, sounds like it could be fun. Thanks.
@roland13x:
Awesome, I wish you great success with the game sales! From what I've seen, the visuals definitely nice, IMO anyways. Hopefully Nintendo being stubborn with demo's doesn't hurt your sales.. I see that being a problem with a lot of WiiWare titles, sadly.

@0bsessions: I think it depends how many N64 titles you have. I have a few and they take up a ton of space. There are a lot of WiiWare games that look great and also look like they'll take a serious chunck of space (obvioulsy FF:CC being the chief contender in that category, but also star soldier, the luc bernard games, lostwinds, etc.)
As for Dr. Mario WiiWare I know people who are literally counting the days. I don't see how you can't see the charm of a revival of that game with full online support...

@[KU]Shindokie: Can't View Kotaku on His Phone Anymore :(: it's a shame that nintendo doesn't charge a fee for this service. i know alot of people wanted to pay extra money for the opportunity to buy these.

Well, yes.
Only because online modes are something rare and special on the Wii, that doesn't mean they are in general.

Ugh, it's always "For Japan". When is anyone outside of Japan going to actually get anything cool for their Wii? I want a Dr. Mario remake please!!!!!!!!!!

@Figroti: Its Japanese name is Saku Saku Animal Panic. It'll be coming to the US and Europe with a different name. The goal is to separate the different critter species by building a fence. It's got 100s of different levels, a couple minigames, and 4 player co-op. It's my studio's first title, and we can't believe we're a Japanese launch title.

@0bsessions: Hell no.
1000 Wii Points for a quick "remake" of Dr. Mario (which could be a Flash game as well) or a Pokemon "game" with N64 graphics is pretty damn overpriced...
Only Nintendo is in the position to put such a high price tag on minigames like these, so they're really pushing the border there...Also keep in mind that Nintendo doesn't have to pay any license fees to themselves, unlike every other developer...it's ridiculous if you ask me...
The worst thing is that Nintendo probably won't ever lower the prices of their Wii Ware games, so we can expect many more cheap productions selling for almost the same price as, let's say, Rez HD

@vaterunser: So, wait...you think it should be MORE expensive?
@ajay42: Well, I AM one of those people who go nuts on VC downloads. I've downloaded somewhere in the neighborhood of thirty VC games and I've still got a bit of space left. The space issue does need to be addressed eventually, but it's not so pressing as you'd think.

Storage would be awesome, but really, if your a console user you should be quite used to CD/cart switching and be able to manage to backup to SD cards....

It's good to see these games don't cost any more than VC games. Well, except Final Fantasy. I'm starting to really hate Squenix.

Nintendo really needs to get on storage STAT. I can't believe they're plowing ahead with WiiWare without dealing with the storage situation. Hell, the Smash Brothers save file looks like it takes up as much room as a few VC games. We're running out of space (and I'm not even one of those crazy people who downloads a VC game every week or anything. I think I've got under 10...)

I agree that demos would be great but I understand why they don't. Look at XBLA as an example. You can download a demo of Puzzle Fighter 2 for example that is playable with 2 players. Why would I want to spend money on it if it's already functional and the only two characters my friend and I use are available?
Some games could work as demos but since the games are small, in a lot of cases a demo would be enough to have fun with the game without actually buying it.

1000 Wii Points for that piece of shit that's Pokemon Ranch?
That's a slap in the face for the indie devs who have no choice but to offer the games at lower prices so people will actually buy them...

@FlameEye: They introduced an icon that would appear on games where any aspect of the online experience would be non-free. This would presumably include DLC or MMO subscription fees, but they didn't give any details. Considering the negative conclusions people jumped to, they definitely should have.

I wonder what that cell shaded Harvest Moon-esque looking game is, and what it'll be all about. Looks pretty interesting.

While it's cool knowing that this is just around the corner now, the real question is just how big these games will be. 512MB is looking very small now days with stuff like this coming.

@FlameEye: If I remember the article correctly, only some games will take advantage of the pay to play system and one knows what features it'll have.
I think Kotaku covered it a long while back, but very few details were given.
@sbrumm1983: Or at least a couple gigs of internal flash memory. 2-4 would be pretty sweet for a bunch of games, and just enough since Nintendo isn't offering anything like movies.

$15 for a game? Somewhat cheap for a full game, but you can get full PS, and XBL games for under $10.

And Star Soldier R? 800 POINTS? It better be here before April 30, because I can't imagine it being hard to localize.

I think I've figured out how the hell they're going to fit FF:CC:The Little King thing.
It looks like a small slice of FFXI. The data itself might probably be the same amount as some of the FFXI updates that come inbetween the really big ones like the holiday event packets.
From what they've shown off the gamescape looks to be about as big as one zone in one of the major FFXI cities or even Mhaura(sp.), Selbina.

Interesting, seems like Nintendo's slowing doing the Xbox Live thing. Little by little, they are adding more and more features to their online system. Before you know it, they'll be charging a yearly fee for their online system (they'd better not).
As a sucker for FF and Pokemon, I'll most likely be spending some Wii Points on those two. Hmmm, I guess I'll wait a bit for reviews, though.

It sucks they aren't going to offer demos. A lot of people would prefer a sample then buying the whole thing. It sucks having to buy something you don't or may not like. Either way i hope this helps bring out my small developers or give ideas to others to game gamers happy.
