XBLA Doom and Assault Heroes Get Cheaper
Posted by Mike Fahey at 4:40 AM on March 18, 2008
This week's Xbox Live Arcade Wednesday sees the addition of two new games to the Arcade Hits program, which take top-selling Arcade titles and tries to squeeze some more sales out of them by slashing prices. This week's new additions include Assault Heroes, which is a damn fine shooter whether you play alone or with a friend, and DOOM, which is...well, DOOM. If I have to explain to you guys what DOOM is you might be at the wrong website. Might I suggest an alternative? For those of you still with us, the XBLA version of DOOM features four-player online multiplayer and looks pretty damn old. Both of these titles will be available Wednesday for 400 points apiece. Hit the jump for the full press release, which includes a look at some of the upcoming XBLA titles you'll eventually be able to buy at half price.
Spring Fever is in the Air Xbox LIVE Arcade Adds New Arcade Hits and Gives You a Sneak Peek at Upcoming TitlesMore top-selling arcade titles available from Wednesday at discounted prices as they become Xbox LIVE Arcade Hits
LONDON - 17th March, 2008 - Whether you're avoiding spring cleaning or revving up for the Easter holidays, be sure to check out the latest Arcade Hits coming to Xbox LIVE® Arcade for Xbox 360™ on Wednesday, including "Assault Heroes" and "DOOM". The Arcade Hits programme offers some of the best-selling Xbox LIVE Arcade games at permanently reduced prices. They can be found within the Xbox LIVE Arcade section of the new Game Store, making it easier than ever to build a library of great downloadable games.
· "Assault Heroes" (Sierra Online). Become the only surviving member of an elite special forces unit searching for a secret underground lab. Play the mission alone or fight side-by-side with a friend in the two-player cooperative mode. The winner of IGN's Xbox LIVE Arcade game of the year for 2006, "Assault Heroes" will be available for 400 Microsoft Points.
· "DOOM" (id Software). Originally released in 1993, "DOOM" introduced millions to the white-knuckle excitement of the first-person shooter (FPS). Relive the classic demon-blasting action with up to four players over Xbox LIVE*, complete with 5.1 surround sound and smoother graphics. "Doom" will be available for 400 Microsoft Points.
With 14 Xbox LIVE Arcade games clocking in with a Metacritic score of 80 or higher, the platform has established itself as the go-to source for quality pick-up-and-play gaming. More than 120 games are currently available on Xbox LIVE Arcade, with new content added on Wednesdays. Specific information about each new title will be available on http://www.xbox.com in the coming weeks, but here is an early look at a few games coming to Xbox LIVE Arcade in the near future:
· "Rocky and Bullwinkle" (Zen Studios Ltd.). Here's something you'll really like! Based on the highly popular US cartoon series of the same name, "Rocky and Bullwinkle" on Xbox LIVE Arcade is a fast and fun party experience packed with over 100 micro-games and decked out in authentic retro art style. All your favourite characters are coming straight out of Frostbite Falls and into your living room: Rocky, Bullwinkle, Boris, Natasha, Dudley Do-Right and many more. Plus, players with an Xbox LIVE Vision camera can control 25 of these games using fun gestures. Gee whiz, Rocky!
· "Shotest Shogi" (AI Factory Ltd. and Rubicon Development Ltd.). Experience a new kind of shogi, Japan's top board game, which encourages complex tactical play and strategic sacrifices. Set in an elegant Japanese room, this beautifully rendered game features 16 challenging artificial intelligence opponents as well as an online multiplayer mode*. For beginners, "Shotest Shogi" on Xbox LIVE Arcade also offers an advanced tutorial that guides and tests players as they progress through the game.
· "TiQal" (Slapdash Games). An addictive new puzzler, "TiQal" takes players on an epic journey to save an ancient Mayan village. Players demolish enemy block walls by matching squares of the same colour and building them up to unleash massive combo points and mind-blowing power-ups. Partner with a friend over local or Xbox LIVE* co-op play to rescue the village, while enjoying sumptuous graphics, exciting sound effects and an awe-inspiring musical score.
· "Wits & Wagers" (Hidden Path Entertainment LLC). Party and trivia fun! Even if trivia isn't your thing, the first trivia and party game to hit Xbox LIVE Arcade is one in which players can win by making educated guesses, playing the odds or just knowing the interests of other players, whether they are local or online. Break out the Big Button Pad controllers or play couch vs. couch on Xbox LIVE for a trivia party extravaganza.
· "Wolf of the Battlefield: Commando 3" (Capcom Entertainment Inc.). Xbox LIVE Arcade's "Wolf of the Battlefield: Commando 3" revives one of the most popular arcade shooters with an all-new adventure. Battle solo or recruit two other specialised commandos to conquer the evil tyrant, General Ratiev. Players can play as Codename Wolf, Coyote or Fox to take on waves of soldiers, rescue POWs and blow up armoured vehicles through a variety of dangerous battlefields.
*Online multiplayer gameplay requires an Xbox LIVE Gold subscription.

Hate to change to topic, but I want to echo Moofrank about Wits & Wagers. It may not be hardcore enough for you, but it is a party game disguised as a trivia game, so it works for a wide variety of people.
Heck, it has betting in it! You do not need to know trivia in order to win! How can you go wrong? The board game is great, so I expect the XBLA version to be just as good

I want Doom, Ultimate Doom, Doom II and Final Doom all that in one cartridge for the Nintendo DS with Wi-fi where you can play deathmatch and Co-op...
Quake II and III (DM,CTF,TDM) will be nice for the DS too...

I bought a cd copy of Doom with the Ultimate Doom Doom, Doom II, and Final Doom just before doom 3 came out for 10 bucks at walmart. Beat that XBLA, whats that? You can't? Thought so.

Didn't even consider buying Doom at the old price thanks to already owning the game, but did want the online multiplayer (and achievements -- cuz I'm a whore). 400 points? That's my sweet spot. Will be downloading on Wed.

@DarkHogosha: A shame that the Scene It vibrators don't actually vibrate. Would have been perfect for Rez :(
Wits and Wagers does seem interesting though. Glad to see the big button controllers getting extra support.
Given that it's basically a 4-way d-pad and 4 buttons, it might have actually made an good arcade controller. Would the IR be too slow for such a purpose?

I'd love to get DOOM, just for the old school feel, but it's stuck in right-handed mode and I'm a lefty. So I gots to put it next to Bioshock and Deus Ex 2 as a game I can't play.

@iamnotdryad:
I haven't.
I've been holding off on Doom, partly out of objection to the price (classic though it may be) and because I can play the exact same game on my MP3 player (Archos 402cc) but I've come close to breaking down and buying it many times (the voice in the back of my head is telling me as soon as I spend the points I've been cheaply saving, Samurai Shodown II will come out).
I think I'll have to get it this time, if only for the multiplayer influx this sale will cause. I'll have to kick it nostalgic style like I used to and put the score to The Crow on my soundtrack specifically for Doom. It works really well....and that's the music I hear when I think of Doom, not "duh duhduhduh duhduhduh duhduhduh duuuuuun!" Cept I had to play it with the CD in the drive of course, as there were no mp3s back then. Luckily I still have my CD from high school.

@iamnotdryad: I haven't gotten Doom (or Marathon). There are far superior FPS out there these days... and knowing that I wouldn't play DOOM online, I refrained from spending $10 on a 20 year old game.
For $5, however, I might be willing...
But seriously, Doom, Marathon, UMK3 and Street Fighter are all games I would consider buying for $5... but $10 for games that came out 15-20 years ago really isn't that good of deal... online play or not.
/I will buy Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo HD Remix, however... for new art, online play and new balancing (which is much needed, since Super-Turbo was insanely unbalanced... at least for a Street Fighter game.)

I HIGHLY recommend getting Assault Heroes to anyone who doesn't own it.
I gladly spent $10 on it 6-7 months ago, and I still think it's one of the strongest, original XBLA title.
... but I might have to break down and pick up Doom for $5, even though I doubt I'll ever play it online.

Nice. Assault Heroes is totally one of those games that I'd have gone for at $5 but $10 made me pause.
Haven't gotten Doom yet either. Might pick them both up to encourage the expansion of price drops. Still don't get why these two games get drops and some of the launch-ish titles are still original price. (I'm looking at you Jewel Quest and Feeding Frenzy!!!)

Ooooh. Wits and Wagers....
The boardgame is a very interesting trivia game. Basically, the answers are all impossible to remember numbers. The players take wild guesses at the correct number, then players bet on which answer is closest, with the ones in the center having lower odds.
You get a few points for being correct, and more points for guessing who is correct. Clever game. If it has online and voice chat, it'll be great.

Best thing about XBLA Doom is online play. Sure, you COULD play Doom multiplayer back in the day, but unless you were playing in on a corporate network, multiplayer was much harder to get into than nowadays.
It was always sad for me reading the reviews in old PC gaming magazines about how awesome multiplayer in Quake, Doom, Duke Nukem 3D was, yet knowing fully well that those were professional reviewers using networks they had created pretty much exclusively for gaming with their professional reviewer collegues, and that as a kid in those days I'd have a snowball chance in hell of getting to ever play those games in multiplayer, save perhaps the odd modem game with a friend, which was so cumbersome to setup you almost had to plan a week in advance.

The only thing that might be a 'nice touch' is if Microsoft 'price-matched' (i.e., refunded the point differential) for those that have purchased the game(s) on sale in the previous week, 10 days, or some other relatively short period of time. Don't count on this 'Suggestion Box' post to come to anything more than one person's musings.
Other than that, I am at peace with having spent the full price on these games months and months ago. With the XBLA library having grown so much in the last year, they really need to start these sales and/or permanent price drops more often.
