Zero Punctuation Takes On Devil May Cry 4, Foul Mouthery Ensues
Posted by Michael McWhertor at 10:20 AM on March 6, 2008
Ben "Yahtzee" Croshaw and I can agree on one thing. Devil May Cry has long been, in our shared opinion, "as aggressively juvenile as a 12 year old on pixie stix" and suffers from "truly obnoxious level design". But that doesn't mean it's not fun. It just requires the shutting off of a cynical brain, one that's jaded from one too many mid-air dick-waving sword fights, infinite ammo and the constant din of stylised violence to enjoy the demon puppet juggling.

@ManiacFive: Alright, maybe I did miss the point and it's a comedic "roast" of something he actually enjoyed. That doesn't change the fact that most of the comments in this thread sum up to "tits" or "this is the oc" or "this game is shit." Them? I'm mostly replying to them. Yahtzee still pisses me off, though.

@gigantor21: It's strange. Personally, while I can agree DMC4 seems in some ways incomplete, I'm probably one of the few people who will say it's much better than 3 (in turn, I also consider 1 to be a better overall game than 3). The evolution of the combat system starting in 3 felt like a waste thanks to the poor enemy design, which, combined with the poor level design, made it feel even less fun as the game progressed. More or less, 4 seemed like a decent balance between the design philosophies of 1 and 3 (more emphasis on combat as with 3, but as with 1, enemies aren't completely brain-dead, with the levels themselves being more interesting aesthetically like in 1).

@JChaos: Agreed on all points.
DMC4 is a decent enough game, but it's utter "meh" compared to 1 and 3. The key phrase I hear in most reviews, including Yahtzee's, is "lazy design". That's what kills the experience for me. Capcom wasn't as caring or meticulous with this installment as they should've been, and it showed.
I bought DMC4 a month ago, and have already stopped playing it. :/

@Garro: What...?
Everything he said was pretty much spot on, especially compared to the earlier DMCs.
The jumping puzzles were boring, the dice segments were nothing but fluffing, the game didn't deliver on any of Kobayashi's promises, and Nero was pretty much a textbook "replacement" character that I have no real desire to see any more of.
The game was a fantastic game, but it is easily the second weakest in the franchise. It's still leaps and bounds ahead of DMC2, but way, WAY behind DMC3.
I consider myself a fanboy of the series, and I can't really name one thing that I enjoyed about DMC4 ABOVE AND BEYOND DMC3. Frankly, I thought Yahtzee's roast was rather generous. (And yes, it was a roast... he could have very easily torn into a lot more than he did if it were a serious review)

@Setzer IIDX: I'll say it, several times.
The game is too easy.
Played it on Devil Hunter and died ONCE, and that was when I was goofing around. Played it on Son of Sparda, and have only died twice, both to my own stupidity rather than actual challenge. Playing through DMD and concentrating on S-ranks, and only now am I beginning to see the challenge that I should have seen in Devil Hunter mode.
The game is too damn easy, and as a DMC fan, I am disappointed as hell.

I will agree that the story is ass and the characters are douches. I will also agree that the platforming on the appearing/disappearing tiles is crap. I will also agree that the board game thing is just an annoyance, though if people still haven't figured this out, punch the dice with the demon arm and it'll land on the same side it was on when you struck it.
The game is still about combat though. It's only about combat. The biggest issue I have is that you can't select your starting point in the bloody arena. When you do fairly well in the arena having to grind through the first areas is just a hassle. I'm not a particularly good player, but the idea of having to grind through 28 levels to get to and then possibly surpass my high score so far just gives me chills.

This review sucks; everything he said was indicative of ignorance or bias. No, I'm not a DMC or Capcom fanboy, because I only bought DMC 1 a few months ago and then DMC 4.
Every problem he had with this game is a problem with the genre and style at large, and you can't pick apart an individual piece of work because of that. If you don't like goth culture, you don't take one goth shirt and say it sucks because goth sucks. If you don't like rap music, you don't review a rap song and say it sucks because rap isn't really music.
I loved the game, and if you really think Nero is emo or a ripoff of Raiden, you've either a) never played the game or b) were too lazy to pay attention to the story or go deeper than what connections you sloppily drew. If a DMC game is boring for you, then the genre isn't for you, because the extremely fast hack and slash gameplay only get's better with DMC 4. Anyone who says God of War trumps ANY aspect of this game, ANY aspect, should take a hard look at what 'quality' is.
Reading the comments leads me to believe that the lot of you just love to hate things that someone with a loud mouth and a bad attitude doesn't like. Some of you haven't even played this game, and that's more than obvious (thinking that Gloria ends up being just tits? Really? Anyone whose actually beaten the game will immediately know why that's BS).
Again, DMC is a product of a highly stylized genre/culture that if you don't like, picking apart one game isn't the place to start. I don't go into racing games and say, "the fact that you're STILL driving a car is indicative of sloppy design, and is really just showing the age of the genre as a whole." Loving DMC style gameplay and enjoying that non-existant radical changes doesn't make you fanboy, it just makes you a fan. Does loving Halo 3 from Halo 2 make you a fanboy? Because I'm pretty sure you could add that on a long list of popular, quality games that haven't deviated much from their origins (as Starcraft 2 will be).
If the genre or style isn't for you, that's fine, a lot of games out there just aren't "for" me either. Difference is, I'm not going to go into one of those threads and bitch about every miniscule detail that isn't a problem with the game, but the genre as a whole. Seriousley, just grow up.

Ok, here's something you might find unexpected; a guy who's been a DMC fan from the beginning and thought Yahtzee's review was hilarious. He's got plenty of valid complaints, like the level revisiting and some instances of camera issues. But then he also has the same issue with the game that every reviewer has with any game, any gamer for that matter; some of the things in the game just don't suit his tastes. It's not his fault he doesn't dig over-the-top action sequences and cheesy one-liners; he just doesn't have a taste for them and that's all and that's fine. Just like so many of you have a taste for DMC or you don't, or have a taste for Yahtzee's reviews or don't. You can't fault someone for their personal tastes because you'll spend an eternity arguing and butting your heads together and the only thing you'll accomplish at the end of it all is raging headaches all around. So just acknowledge that not everyone who hates what you love is an abomination and get on with your lives.
For everyone who hates how Capcom makes its games (plenty of sequels with similar gameplay and sometimes design for each of them), well, that's fine too. Just don't ruin it for the rest of us, please.
As someone who's been playing Megaman/Street Fighter/Devil May Cry games for years, I can confidently say that they don't make them simply to make cash off their fans. Yes, money is a factor, but they use the sequels as a chance to try and perfect the formula. They tweak the difficulty here, adjust features there, and release it to the fans to see what they think. Ask any longtime Mega/SF/DMC/RE fan which their favorite game was and they'll likely name one or two and the specific features that made it so. The fact that Capcom doesn't then poll their fanbase to see which aspects they like the best is unfortunate. To me, I see the sequels as simply an opportunity to go on another adventure with one of my favorite characters. They keep the games similar enough that there's a comfortable familiarity, so that I know that I'm playing one of my favorite games, but throw in enough differences to make the experience fresh and new.
Personally, I thought DMC4 was fun, and a great game, but not as good as DMC3. They hit damn-near to perfection with DMC3, so it's going to take some gargantuan effort to top that, something that was sadly missing from DMC4.
For those who think Ninja Gaiden and God of War are better, come back when you've got a game with fast-paced but stylish action, a great story with good character development, plenty of different combat options and loads of varied but all equally epic boss battles; then we'll talk. DMC3 had all of the above and more. I'm sure Ninja Gaiden and God of War are great games, but I have yet to see anything come close to the complete package that is DMC3.

Honestly, does noone else think he played the game on Human mode just so he could get through the game faster?
He said the game was too easy. That's never been said by anyone that plays the game on a harder difficulty level.
He said there were too few weapons. Everyone's been griping about that, but come on. The last one you only got to use two at a time anyway. Granted Nero could have used more Weapons or Devil Bringer added moves, but with Exceed, his sword became a beast of combos and timing.
And anyone that gripes about the story is probably the same kind of person that complains Evil Dead wasn't a good horror movie. Srsly.

Agreed on all parts, though the game is still fun. Combat is definitely the best part, followed by the ridiculous, over-the-top fight sequences.
The story is nowhere near as good as DMC4, mainly because there's no exposition, you're just suddenly thrown into the situation and don't know what the hell is going on.

Whatever. DMC4 was an evolution of the series. Dante got Style Change. Nero brought fresh ideas to combat. And enemy design returned to DMC1 standards, back from the mediocrity of DMC3 (which was otherwise a good game).
I also experienced many less camera problems and I'm a series vet from DMC1-3. I can't even recall what fixed-camera time puzzles are being referred to. Overall still not perfect, but no complex 3D game in history has gotten the camera perfect yet.
The game was solid in my book. And I resent this Nero/Raiden thing... there is a tenuous connection there cynics love to latch onto.

Right on again.
I bought the game, and regret it.
Sure, I had fun, but it suffers from the same thing which made me stop and never finish Silent Hill 4 - the REDOING FUCKING LEVELS OVER TO ARTIFICIALLY LENGTHEN THE GAME SHIT GAY SHIT.
I DESPISE level design choices that are "do the same thing AGAIN, only with a different character, or with another character following you". It's mind numbing that they would think it's a good idea. But hey, we've got an established series already THEY'LL BUY IT NEWAYZ.
I did however, enjoy DMC4's story, as generic as it was, simply because Dante is so badass. But I haven't put it back in, rather choosing to return to both Rock Band and Mass Effect, because they manage to have much better replay value.

Still, I am enjoying DMC4, even though I am stuck on some irritating boss dude who is blatantly cheating. @Jambolia: If it makes enough money (and it has) then there will be another one. The problem with Devil May Cry is for all its hair-wax, goth belts and leather jackets one can't escape the feeling that it's trying too hard to be cool.
The up-shot of this is that a fluid and fairly competant combat system is lumbered with a clumsy plot and unlikable characters. If Capcom would just step away from the clone-o-matic for a moment and stop churning out endless lines of sequels perhaps we could entice them into using some of their programming talent making a game with some originality or good storytelling.
God damn it doesn't need to be Shakespeare but I think we can do a bit better than a repeat of 'The OC' with swords and demons.

Fantastic! Looks like Capcom's up to it's old business of watering down it sequels, "again." They did it with the Street Fighter and Mega Man series and now they're doing it with the Devil May Cry and soon the RE series
Outside of the suspect fascism and gentrification that you will be conducting in RE5, I figured this was the route Capcom would take with this and their other 3D games.
Ha! well I'm on to them!
Capcom almost got me with the Mega Man Zero series; the first one being quite literally "sex" on GBA, then Capcom would produce four(ty :P) more versions of that same game with strained missions and thinned out play mechanics. DMC4 is no different than that so I'm sticking to just one version of RE (that being 4, for no other reason than I know that 5 with be a more watered thinned brew of RE4).

Devil May cry is the epitome of what is wrong with Japanese-designed games these days. It's too "boxed in," it has pathetic, tired combat, and feels just like the same shit they were making ten years ago.
Too many people will still lap up whatever Japanese designers shit out, even when it's sub-par for the times. The "I agree with the negative comments but still enjoy the game" should be a wake up call," but probably won't be.

DMC4 is my favorite in the series so far, and even then I enjoyed the review anyway. As for the board game puzzle, it's not an issue at all once you learn that using Buster with the Devil Bringer is guaranteed to roll the number on top of the die every time (making it possible to move to whatever part of the board you please).

@MattyD: Ninja Gaiden is pretty and all... But better gameplay? No just no.
I don't even think God of War is worth comparing to DMC or Ninja Gaiden though. Both kick the **** out of it. If I had to give GoW credit for anything it would just be the bosses. The game itself is a horrible mash fest.

For some reason the two frames of "Allow me to expand" made me laugh. As did Nero being a twat. Good stuff.

@Kirbytheslayer: In-Kirby XMB: Yep. He probably would have hated it. I'm pretty sure it would consist of him saying the game is too damn long, cliched, and has terrible combat and gameplay. However, he likes the dream sequences and Kaim as a character. I don't think he would finish it though. It's a 50 hour game without doing any sidequests...

@Sloopydrew: It would have been worse. Croshaw hates JRPGS.
He essentially would have said "This game is a steaming pile of shit. I refuse to review it."
@MattyD: Heh? Ninja Gaiden? You're joking, right? I own Sigma (The best Ninja Giaden) and Devil May Cry 3. Devil May Cry's gameplay is superior in every way to it. Ryu is clunky and unwieldy in comparison to Dante. And, it wins in story, hands down, because NG doesn't have one.

Currently playing Jet - Are You Gonna Be My Girl in Audiosurf. He's right, it is fun. I still like the downhill super wavy-ness of the Billy Talent songs better though.
Next time I play Devil May Cry, I'll make sure to take a drink everytime someone breaks the laws of physics.

tbh, one of the things i like about yahtzee is that even when i really enjoyed the game hes slating, the things that he flags up usually annoyed me too...just not to such an extent...and im far to lazy/unskilled to produce reviews about them anyway
the timed jumping with fixed camera and re-spawning baddies was appauling :| somewhere, out there, right now, is a capcom designer in need of a damn good slapping.
Also, i still cant decide whether the final boss fight was totally awesome, or if i was just so reminded of Rahxephon that i was just sitting with a goofy grin thinking about that instead...

This is exactly how I've always felt about the series TBH. The combat felt fresh back when the first game came out but it's been superceded both technically (Ninja Gaiden - fanboys EAT IT) and for sheer entertainment value (God of War). And there's no denying that Dante has always been a $*$^.

Gah...3 minutes of blasphemy. If you don't think the opening cutscenes for DMC4 are badass, then you're missing man parts or older than the hills.
I wonder if I'm the only person that liked the board game. It added some suspense- will I make it through the room? If luck shows me the middle finger, can I make it anyway?

I agree with most of it, especially how outrageous the jumping puzzles with fixed camera while also being timed have a tendency to drop you into a room and respawn enemies are. I killed them, why are they only coming back in a room under where there's a huge gap to cross, and why did the designer of the building know the floor would break there in the future and build in a bunch of blue orbs a guy ni the future can attach to, and leave the trigger to activate them on ground that won't break, which nobody will think is strange or out of place. I mean, come on, it'd NEVER be that way.
Also, funniest line from Yahtzee in awhile, was the bit where he imitated a game designer. "I want to kill myself!" Seems like he really had fun with this one.

It's personally my favorite in the series. Sure it could've been improved upon and Dante's missions could've been more fresh, but this will do for the first DMC game of this gen.
Plus, I thought Nero was cool. The Devil Bringer is awesome, and so is his Devil Trigger. Nothing more satisfying then giving one of those armored assholes a multiple german suplex and a dropkick to the face.

That was still hilarious. Croshaw's still got it. And that part about the enemies respawning is so true. I'm surprised he didn't bring up that god-damned claw platforming. Whenever I got to one of those, I felt the urge to throw my controller through a window.
@Reibooi: He's satirizing it. It's like a roast. Do you really hate people at a roast? No, you're just messing around with them. Joking. Having a good laugh.

look at all the game you love, chances are theres a novel worth of shit that pissed you off about it but you still love it for various reasons and enjoyed them immensely.

I didn't really care for this game either. Dante had enough depth to justify his own full game, but with only 8 missions he felt like a sampler. It was a good game, but not great like 1 and 3 were.

I love the game, rather obsessed by it really. And the thing that sold me on it is the very thing he said wasn't worth looking past the other stuff over - the combat. I had fun fighting in this game.
Still, they cocked it up good with all the retracing and the weapon shortage. DLC could fix it, but Kobayashi said there wouldn't be any... so Maldron makes his sad face.
