Halo 3's Forge Gets Filtered
Posted by Michael McWhertor at 1:20 PM on April 5, 2008
Enterprising map makers and modders will have a handful of new toys to play with in Halo 3's Forge creation tool when the Legendary Map Pack ships. And while new scaffolding and tweaked shipping containers may get you moist, it's the new suite of visual filters that may excite Halo fans most. The latest Bungie weekly update reveals the latest Forge improvements, including funky and fresh filters that will give your map a "juicy", "gloomy" or "old timey" look. That's great and all, Bungie boys, but what we need is the ability to generate lens flare under any lighting condition. We require massive amounts of lens flare!

@Pornosaur: Aww. Don't be so hard on Halo. It's like the friend that you use for some time because it leads to getting to know his superior contacts. Then you drop it like dead skin particles.
Dead skin particles? I should really get out more often. :(

This is a cool thing.
Hope they don't expect me to pay more than 200MSP for this though.

Now the real question is will this release wipe out the Xbox Live servers like the Call of Duty map pack or really any release more than 2000 people were looking to buy?

I like it. I was already trying to pull off the same effects with just explosion effects, but this is a lot easier. Time to bust out my best vaudeville voice.

While we're at it, Bungie should make a gun that fires out inordinate amounts of bloom!

finally! Thank you bungie! It was getting tiresome to switch my tv's color settings, all those menus and button pressings were a strain on these fragile hands of mine

I wish they would give us more sttings for items because it's kind of frustrating that a man cannon can launch ANYTHING. Just give us a weight option please!

If they are going for the old timey filter they need to add a forge item that is a piece of plywood with cowboys painted on it and holes cut out around the head for taking touristy photos.

wow, the gloomy filter makes it look just like an unreal engine 3 game. i love unreal, but i hate the visuals. halo gets a lot of love for using such a colorful palette. why anyone would want to drain it of its vibrancy, i'll never know.

This is cool and all, but I seriously lack the patience or talent to put Forge to any good use! I'm really excited just to get my hands on the three new maps, especially Avalanche. Fortunately I have the sweet new CoD4 maps to tide me over until the 15th! Creek FTW!

They said the effects are applied in realtime during the game so yes, you can see the filter while playing.

When are they going to make a, you know, real map editor instead of just letting you put some guns and boxes down?

I lack DSL so i dont have Xbox live to download these maps. Are they going to come out in stores so I can buy them, like halo 2 maps?

@KirbyMorph: You obviously have no idea how HARD that would be on a console.
Not to mention how FEW people would actually be able to use it correctly.
Making maps isnt selecting shit and plopping it down in a world mate. It takes a lot of time / effort / skills to do so.

I have never had the patience to mess around with Forge enough, but its pretty impressive how robust it is and how creative others have been. I'd like to play more games with the custom levels but haven't really figured out how yet.
My lack of desire (and, apparently, many others) to create levels with Forge really makes me wonder how Little Big Planet is going to be a mainstream hit.

What I really want is the ability to throw 16 ghosts on sandtrap. Along with a decent amount of plasma cores.

Obviously everyone is going to be experimenting with these so for the first few weeks I'm not gonna be able to play customs on the new maps without someone putting a visual filter in it lol. That's ok though. I'm sure after some time people will use them more sparingly. I think the idea is neat and I know that I'm at least gonna use it for some screenshots.
I also like the lego-style tower pieces that is shown on Sandtrap. You can really see the evolution of Bungie's thought process through these map packs. First it was geared more towards the artistic side (-cough- camping stools -cough-). With heroic they probably realized forge didn't have the items it should have. And then on the legendary they enhanced the type of items.
Fans wanted some remakes and Bungie gave us them. The fans wanted certain things from matchmaking and Bungie has been implementing them (i.e. MLG playlist, which I highly reccommend that playlist multi-flag on Onslaught was a blast). For awhile it seemed like Bungie was ignoring the community but that's obviously not the case seeing as what Bungie has been doing lately. I for one am thankful.
I think a lot of people, including a lot of people here on Kotaku, bash Halo cause it's popular. Alright you like COD4 better. But clearly you should be able to see why the Halo franchise has become popular. It's a good mix of infantry and vehicular combat. Also the game uses shields so it's not "point and kill" so it's more mainstream-friendly of a game than say Counterstrike is. Not to mention there have been a large number of hilarious moments that would just not be possible on another game (like lasering a banshee and the broken banshee falls on you and splatters you). If Halo's not your cup of tea that's fine. It just puzzles me whenever someone says "why is Halo so popular?" when to me the answer is very obvious. Not everyone is looking to play a game just to win.
Hmm this post is quite a big bigger than I intended and sort of went off on a tangent/rant. >__>

@DARTH_TIGRIS: Thats ok since most of the shit "normal" folks make is crap anyways. ;D
its only the real effort that shines in terms of playability / downloads.
Id rather have a handful of gems than a mountain of shit to wade through.

I wonder if the only filters are the ones that were announced.
Because I think a 'fog' filter would be really handy.

Ok, these are all really cool, and I'm not trying to be a hater but....
If the game engine can do this, where is my IR and/or false-colorized filter Bungie? I'll take it as a limited powerup even, I'm not really picky.
You know what I'm talking about.

@Strangelove: You can. Read the Weekly Update. The effects are applied in real time and can be utilized during gameplay.
I've kinda gotten bored with the screenshot ability and have only been using Theater mode to document shennanigans in Matchmaking... I suppose this might change that for a bit...

Say what you will about Halo or Bungie, but they do support their games like crazy, continuing to add value well after release. Anyone who says Halo 3 isn't worth the $60 (or even $80 with map packs if you're impatient) is insane compared to what sells for full price these days.

This is why I love Halo so much. Bungie will always add more and more stuff not just map packs. Just think this would all be free if Microsoft didn't want us to pay for it.
But one thing that is free is the playlist updated we have had so many events in Halo like Extra XP weekends and stuff for christmas etc.
No other developer does this.

I've always wanted to have the option to setup light sources. lighting is good way to create a mood or vibe for an area, like having a tunnal with a creepy flickering light. Being able to use light and shadows would be sweet on my maps.
