Mini Bash's DS Brought to Life
Posted by Brian Ashcraft at 11:40 PM on April 7, 2008
Someone has taken Mini Bash's origami DS and made it real! Over at Newgrounds, artist zikayn writes:
I was bored over Easter and after reading something about a kid making his own DS out of paper, I decided to try and make one of my own, surprisingly it actually started working...Mini Bash response: "Why does his move, but mine doesn't?" Because zikayn is a witch, that's why.

"Mini-bash, you know how manga doesn't move, while anime does, right?
That's like the difference between your origami DS and zikayn's origami DS."
Hmm... (pause) ... sometimes no matter how we try to make it sensible for kids, we just fail. :-\

Awesome. I'd comment that his hand-to-paper button movements weren't accurate, but I was too busy looking at a well done penicilmation. Can't think of what, but this reminds me of some kind of awesome animation or show. Regardless, it's nice to see your son inspired someone to do something cool. An excellent lesson for the youth: With a little creativity and imagination, you could inspire anyone.
You just might have to wait a few years for that to sink in.

If zikayn is a witch then someone must touch him! Someone that isn't me...
Seriously, I don't know where he is but I have to stay here and wait for a package.
No, I have to sign for it.
No, I'm not having it left on my porch, someone might steal it.
That's none of your buisness.
Fine, let the witch-boy keep on witching. See if i care.

Mini Bash hath produced something of a meme, methinks*.
*an actual meme being something that displays both a level of artistic aptitude and technical skill that the wider internets come to respect.

@jayntampa: "I hate people that can draw. They make me feel inadequate."
I hate to sound like your parents after a piano lesson, but practise makes perfect.
You just need to be "unlocked." In college, I took a class that incorporated life-drawing (I should mention I'm a design student with a background in illustration and comics), which was something I was just NOT good at. The teacher made me see things differently; he made me slow down and really analyze every bump and nuance on my subject's surface, and then all of a sudden, my drawings started to look like things.
I had another teacher that said your drawing could be completely generic, but if you spent a few minutes here and there putting on shadows and highlights, it'd make your drawings look 100 times better than they actually were.
As for my experience with comics, I found that it was very useful growing up to try to copy the work of the artists I most admired: Bill Watterson, Matt Groening, Chuck Schultz. Doing that will really give you insight into WHY they draw things the way they do, and how they solved particular challenges; why they'd put a shadow here or there, or use lines with a certain weight.
You probably don't even care, but I just hate it when I hear someone say they can't do something. EVERYONE can draw!

That was pretty friggin' sweet.
Speaking of the paper DS though, I just remembered now that when my sister was about three or four she was jealous at how my brother and I would play our Gameboys in the car so she drew herself a "Gamegirl" on a memo notebook and spent the rest of the car ride making obnoxious sound effects. (At least I had the decency to use headphones...)

After you wrote up the last article I grabbed some games I wasn't going to have time to play and traded them in to buy my son a Crimson DS for his 6th birthday (there was a really good trade in deal in Canada). I can't wait to see his face when he opens it :)

When I was a wee lad, I made myself a paper Nintendo. For some reason I had a Nintendo compatible joystick but no system, so I taped three pieces of paper together, drew in the first level of Super Mario Brothers, taped it upright in a corner, and pretended to play it. My father saw me playing my paper Nintendo in the corner one day and felt pity on me. A few weeks later I had the real thing...only to have it replaced suddenly (while I was at school) a year later with a typewriter. (sigh) I think my dad took my real Nintendo to a second hand store and gave it away. I still get angry thinking about that.

@Polywhirl: "A meme is just something that popular.". Hee.. wrong. A meme is a piece of information that clone trough a human system. It replicate as soon one human transmit it to other human. Humans are the "replication vector", but can use electronic mediums to jump to human to other human brain. Is almost exactly like a computer virus, but meme affect humans, and computer virus affect computers.

Polywhirl

@splines: You know, that would be true, assuming your definition of a meme was correct.
Except, here's the definition of one: "A unit of cultural information, such as a cultural practice or idea, that is transmitted verbally or by repeated action from one mind to another."
or... "a cultural item that is transmitted by repetition in a manner analogous to the biological transmission of genes."
Neither of which match up to your meaning.
A meme is just something that popular. Quality doesn't factor into it.
@Robotube: True, Newgrounds was founded by Tom Fulp, and did consist of Assassination games. But, he was like 17 or something. Give him a break. He's really brought it up a lot, and works like hard to make it a respectable site.
It's not his fault people take his "Open to Everybody" idea as an invitation to spam shit into it.
@Seruza: I may have mis-understood him, but it's not the money to Ashcraft. It's the lesson behind it. He has to learn that you can't just discard valuable property because somebody makes fun of it, and you can't always get what you want.
@PlayerX: Nope. Some people, me included, just can't draw. I've taken classes. I've practiced. Everything you can do to learn, I've tried it. I can produce some "okay" stuff, but I'll never be able to get beyond where I am, really. I can't draw a straight line. Ever. I can sit there for six hours straight, doing nothing but trying to draw a line, and I will never succeed. I just don't have the hand/eye coordination.

This is the future of gaming, right? What with that e-paper and whatnot?
@Barts:
Make sure that your version of the Flash Player is up to the latest version.
@splines:
I don't think this is stop motion. Rather, he probably animated the "game" in Flash, and overlayed it onto the video of him "playing" the paper DS.
