New Fallout 3 Screens
Posted by Brian Crecente at 8:45 AM on April 8, 2008
Sounds like 360 Magazine had quite a spread on Fallout 3 for this last issue, with nine pages dedicated to the upcoming Bethesda game. Fallout 3, A Post Nuclear Blog, has a run down of the magazine article as well as a number of scans from it showing off some new screens and art for the game. This is one of the few games that really blew me away at last E3, I can't wait to see how it's shaping up this year.

Well...uh...the graphics are nice, I guess...but I'm still finding it hard to get hyped over this. At least one shot of some sort of melee combat might change my mind, but 'Oblivion with guns' is really one of the last things I want to play this or any year.

I really don't see the difference between this and the other Fallouts so far, aside from the fact that it's first person instead of third, combat's a bit faster and you can't shoot rats in the crotch.
My only gripe is I don't have much faith that they'll keep the weird pop culture references I came to love of it's predecessors.
I think you're overreacting. -_-

@jrghoull: I'm fairly certain the only way you'll enjoy The Elder Scrolls 5: Fallout 3 is if you haven't played any of the other Fallouts. That way, you will have no idea what Bethesda decided to shit on to make this.
Now before I get flamed to hell and back, let me just say that I have very little doubt that this will be an enjoyable game. It just will have very little to do with the games I spent many months of my life playing the hell out of, and as I just couldn't get into Oblivion, personally, I feel as betrayed by this as Leonard Boyarsky... though admittedly, I had nowhere near as much personal involvement in it's development as he did.

if you havent play any of the fallout games before..you should know that there were a hell of a lot of zombies who were either neutral or good guys (aka they were nice to you). so i think they took the scariness of the zombies a little too far, as i believe them to be more along the line of undead thugs and theives rather than "brraainnnns! brraaaaiinnns! we want your brains so that we can figure out what to do! braiiiinnnss!!"

@jasu78: Sorry, the first paragraph of your prior post gave me a different impression. Anyhoo, the game doesn't look twitchy at all. The ability to freeze the game to pick your targets and shots sounds like it would slow gameplay down immensely compared to Oblivion.
And what's the basic essence of Fallout? To me, it was story, locale, three-headed brahmin and the ability to shoot someone in the face with a ray-gun; not looking at the tops of buildings and spending a minute and a half planning a move. The perks are still there, so are the stats. Dialogue should be in, and shows no sign of NOT rivaling I and II.
A roleplaying game is NOT about where your camera is.

It's entirely possible that I am overreacting. I also enjoyed noticing that everyone glossed over the whole part where I said it was likely going to be a good game. I think I just failed to make it clear that I am quite afraid that it won't be enjoyable to me.
As someone who has a very hard time getting into FPS games in general, I can't help but feel that no matter what elements Bethesda attempts to keep in, the basic essence of Fallout cannot be transitioned to first person. Twitchy action does not lend itself to an RPG in my own personal belief.
But by all means, enjoy the game. As I said, I'm sure there will be many who will enjoy it, and I'm pretty certain I will be in the minority of those who instead prefer to sit in my darkened cave, filling my entire 1GB hard drive with the full install of Fallout 2 off the CD-ROM. Don't let the dissenters dissuade you from enjoying something. Just don't be quick to dismiss or insult someone who doesn't like everything you do. Not everyone enjoys the PC gaming world's idea that only FPS games can sell anymore.

Indeed. [image.com.com]
It's shaping up nicely, but being a major fanboy of the traditional Fallout games, I have my fears.
I think the hardest part to nail about the Fallout universe will be the feeling of purpose everywhere you go. In Fallout, you traveled on the map screen and only stopped for important reasons, removing much of the boredom associated with a long journey, but if Bethesda lets players wander aimlessly through a vast, dead landscape as in Oblivion, the player will lose sight of which areas are important.
As long as there's a point to exploring the areas between your storyline goals, something Oblivion lacked immensely, the rest of it should fall into place nicely.

I didn't think could be done, but 2008's game lineup may just actually be better than 2007's...and this game is a big part of that. The other great thing about this year is that so far, we're getting some great titles spread out throughout the year instead of an end-of-the-year clusterfuck.

I believe they sold pretty decently. Don't quote me on that, though.
Oh, and you may not believe this, but we actually *don't* want the same "graphics, story, etc, etc." Or does an isometric viewpoint require outdated 2D graphics? (Have you even *seen* Van Buren, the original Fallout 3?) Or perhaps the story must be limited?
Stop assuming that we're anti-progress. We just have different thoughts on what "progress" is.
And it's kinda sad that you admit that games done in the original style would not "very likely sell that well." Well, why the hell does it have to be that way? *Why*?
Oh, right. Shooters with shiny graphics.

@jasu78: In the end, Bethesda was left with two choices for Fallout 3.
1-Completely follow the top down format of the first one with only minor updating for graphics, story, etc, etc. This would please the NMA crowd the most, understandably feels as if they've been tossed out of the house that they helped built, like most PC fans from that era. It however would very likely not sell that well, but hey, the core fanbase is happy, that's what counts right?
2-Try something new while making a strong effort to stick to Fallout canon as much as possible while reaching out to Xenophobic, rabid angry fans who honestly don't give two shits because it's not being done like the old Fallout style. PC gamers are infamous for being bigger, more uptight mofos then console gamers. By trying #2, there's a much better chance to bring in a host of new blood into the fandom and make strong sales that..you know what? It might result in more Fallout projects.
Bethesda has gone with #2, and like it or not, it's the way things are going. It's time to get over it people. Much as you loved Fallout 1 and 2, how did they measure up sales wise?

3)make as much money as possible. make a game that appeals to their highest fanbase in this case, oblivion fans and the industry's highest fanbase FPS. @d_agra:PC folks have no one but themselves to blame for devs shifting focus from PC only to console first, PC second. Well that and the completely stupid graphics race which results in poorly coded games that even 3k PC's can't run.
Long as the game is good and does not stray too far from it's lore and canon, I'll gladly buy it and yes, I've played and beat the hell out of the first two Fallouts. Great games. It's time to move on NMA folks, Van Buren is dead, you aren't getting it back. Stomping your feet and refusing to get with the times within a reasonable measure is going to result in two things.
1-The developers giving you the finger as they find you are imposable to please/sate whiny mofos and thus ignore anything you might have to say, for good and bad. This given time will result in them maybe doing things you don't like, but you won't have any say..because they are no longer listening to you.
2-Other devs not listening to anything you might have to say as they give you the finger too.
I firmly believe Bes will have a number of loud, vocal detractors who will make a point to draw as much attention to themselves as possible when this game hits, even if Fallout 3 does what no one thinks it can, please enough of the hardcores and make a bunch of causals happy. And like all stuck in the past hardcores, they will cast a bad shadow on all fans.

I'm looking very forward to this, because I long ago broke the shackles that keep most hardcore games stuck in the past and unwilling to take anything other then what passes their smell tests. Hardcore Fallout fans need to learn they are quickly becoming irrelevant when it comes to what a dev does and does not do, due to their childish batshit insane stances on things.
