Haze Gets Yet Another Release Date
Posted by Luke Plunkett at 3:30 PM on April 10, 2008
Hear the one about the boy who cried Haze? Cried about a release date too many times, so when the game actually did appear, nobody believed him, and the game bombed at retail. Wise words. Those unable to heed the teachings of Aesop, however, may as well know that Ubisoft have announced a May 23 release date for Free Radical's very yellow shooter. That's for Europe. No date as of yet for the US or Australia, but if precedent's anything to go by, it shouldn't be too far off May 23.

@Mega-Driven: Have you seen the cover for Resistance: Fall of Man? Like, make up your minds, dudes. Is it a HALO with aliens or another WWII shooter? And who wants to play a game where you're a dead alien? For realz.

When you ask people what their favorite game on the N64 is, a lot of them will answer GoldenEye.
Yet, when it comes to Haze, most people are automatically assuming it's not going to be very good.
Hmm, now if only there was a connection between those two games...

I could not be any less interested in this game.
C'mon. Just look at the image up there. I can't stand the ridiculous futuristic helmet with an even more ridiculous crack in the stupid yellow visor. (exposing one eye! How cool! Oh, wait, make the crack go down the faceplate, so it looks like a tear or something, that would be even sweeter) But wait, no end to the sweetness, dude's holding up a cool paintball gun near his face! Look how serious and bad-ass he is! And check out that gritty, futuristic cityscape behind him, with a totally sweet-ass futuristic gunship thing flying over there! Look out dude!
Sweeeeeeeet.
Give me a break. If this was a movie, it would be either direct-to-video, or made by the USA network.
It makes me embarrassed to play videogames.

@dowingba: I completely, wholeheartedly agree with you. Except replace 'a bunch of' with 'none.' Free Radical's games had a lot of charisma and charm, something rare for the FPS genre. That's beside the fact they were damned fun titles; Timesplitters: Future Perfect still remains one of my most memorable games.
Somehow doubt you gave them a shot. But you, like, totally looked at those screenshots, amirite?

Nice to see so many people talking gibberish. The game hasn't even had a decent playthough yet and everyone thinks it's crap. Wait until some reviews come out THEN you can say it's no better than Turok. All the trailers I have seen so far look good but the main selling point of the game is Free Radicals track record and the fact that the game looks good so far.

@dowingba: I was commenting more on the fact that you called their games horribly generic shooters. While they weren't the most innovative shooters around they were really enjoyable, well made games. The Goldeneye influence was obvious (as they made that and Perfect Dark) but the Timesplitters series was one of the best splitscreen games on the PS2.

about the only title i'll be purchasing on ps3 this year, most others are dual platform and i'll get on 360 instead. again another release date on this one.
it's just sad that some ps3 developers can't nail down firm release dates and keep coming up with new ones.
in an effort to use my ps3 for anything other than a bd movie player, i've decided to 'buy in' on the mgs4 sheep line and pick up a copy.
the only other two titles (besides haze and mgs4) i'll be getting on ps3 the whole 2008 season are resistance 2 and killzone 2.
hopefully things will change and i'll buy more than 3 or 4 ps3 titles a year (if anything decent comes out). i've had my 60gb ps3 since the NA launch and have only picked up 5 titles whereas in the same time frame on my 360, i'd already picked up almost 20.

@dowingba: Not really, no. <3 You can't take this Internet thing so seriously, guy. If you're so determined your opinion is so right (and tends to argue against the massive sales and critical acclaim), expect a little cynicism.
@kneehighspy: It would be 'sad' if developers stuck so hard to a release date that the game is broken on said date--Rainbow Six: Vegas 2 comes to mind. The architecture is brand new, unlike the 360s; not only is it (more) similar to a PC, it's been around far longer. What numerous, quality titles did you rabidly amass in the latter's first year? And no, Geometry Wars doesn't count.

@dowingba:
Why do I still doubt that you've even touched a TimeSplitters game. If you did, and spent any reasonable time with it, you'd know that any game in the series was far from being a generic shooter. But stick to your very basic "yeah I don't like timesplitters" excuse. That simplistic sentence you wrote pretty much proves you haven't played it to me. If I was called out by so many people I would have went into detail all the things I didn't like about it rather than using some vague statement to cover your. But, by all means carry on your bullshit tirade.

I love how a majority of people are ready to cut this game's balls off by labeling it as crap before it has even gone gold. Yea, it's probably a pretty generic shooter with a gimmick, but atleast that gimmick is pretty cool. The fact that it has 4 player co-op, 4 player split screen and splitscreen online give it a decent chance for fun.
Honestly these days what shoot ISNT completely generic? Halo? Most generic shooter out there. Faceless hero generic weapons, bland level design. CoD4, my favorite game right now is completely generic. Yea I played the exact game when It was called Desert Combat and later when it was Battlefield2. So should we have cut off CoD4's nuts and put it out to pasture because it's just another War-themed shooter? No, because doing so would result in ruling out a fantastic game.
All I'm saying is give a game a chance. Wait for reviews before calling for blood. Playing for 5 mins on a alpha/beta build doesnt count as sufficient enough evidence for the death penalty of this game. I played it at PAX and it wasnt the most terrible thing ever. The game isnt finished so those old demos arnt even representations of the final product. No one actually knows what the final version of the game plays like, and no one actually knows what cool gimmicks could or could not be in the game.
On gimmicks:
Gimmicks are what make shooters stand apart from another. All shooters are inherently generic because they cannot rely on easily rely storytelling elements to differntiate themselves. Few attempt for instance Bioshock and it's awesome. Some try to use a gimmick approach. Slow Mo bullet time was dOOOOOOOPE back in the day. Now it's standard and just something else that all shooters have. Same with cover systems. That was pretty awesome and set shooters apart from others but now thats standard too. It is very difficult to keep coming up with new gameplay mechanics to make your shooter stand out in the sea of mediocrity. Haze has their Nectar which sounds interesting to me at least because of the side effects (that are supposedly in the game) and how they affect gameplay, especially in squad based environments (ie. your allies looking like enemies and the random uncontrolled trigger finger).
I guess I am just old, and have played way more shooters than most of the target audience these days (and I know alot of you Kotakuites are in the same boat as me) but I will be willing to try anything that spices up the old "point click shoot" formula to shooters.
In closing: Give a game a chance to go gold and get released first before you kill it then proceed to shit on it's grave.
