We Wish This MGS4 Headset Was Real

Posted by Luke Plunkett at 3:30 PM on April 12, 2008

The writer of design blog ProsumeThis says this Metal Gear Solid 4 headset he designed is real, in production, will cost $US 60, is officially licensed and will be available on June 12, same as the game. While I'd love to believe him, I don't, but that doesn't make the design any less pleasing on the eye. In terms of functionality and design it's based off the wireless 360 headset, but MGS fans may see something a little more familiar in the aesthetics and colour scheme, especially if you've been keeping up with the media released for MGS4 (think little wheelie robots). Very classy.

Mario Kart Wii Brings Out The Cheaters? The Bugs?

There's word that cheaters (you bastards!) are apparently moving in full force on Mario Kart Wii. Either that, or there's a bug. The Time Trials mode is getting hit hardest with all sorts of impossible times appearing. According to Mercurys Phoenix at the Official Nintendo Magazine forums writes:

Def Leppard Debuting New Single In Guitar Hero (ie Videogames Killed The Radio Star)

Posted by Luke Plunkett at 2:30 PM on April 12, 2008

Maybe Def Leppard don't know their downloadable content from their full-price retail products. Few weeks back they told a radio show that three of their songs would be appearing in Guitar Hero IV. And hey, they still might, but the timing of that interview and today's announcement that three of their songs would be appearing as DLC for Guitar Hero III has me thinking they're not as up-to-speed on their roman numerals as they are on the whole rock n' roll business.

Hold Onto Your Potatoes, Lego Indy Has 60 Playable Characters

Posted by Luke Plunkett at 1:40 PM on April 12, 2008

A new fact sheet for the upcoming Lego Indiana Jones has been released today. Anything of note? Let's see here..."Tongue-in-cheek humour presents The Original Adventures in a manner only LEGO can whip up"....no. "Explore the globe and solve puzzles that encourage creative thinking through the use of teamwork and unique building situations only possible in a LEGO world". No, no no. "Cooperative gameplay encourages parents to share the legacy of Indiana Jones with their children in a fun and humorous way". Boring. AH. Here we are! "Unlock more than 60 playable characters, including villains and supporting characters (Marion Ravenwood, Short Round, Rene Belloq, Willie Scott, Marcus Brody, Jones Senior and Mola Ram)". Sixty characters, eh? Not super-surprising, since the Star Wars games had a big playable cast as well, but then Short Round was never in Star Wars, either, so this is much more exciting.

Echocrome Gets (European) Release Date

Posted by Luke Plunkett at 1:20 PM on April 12, 2008

Echocrome's out in Asia. Nowhere else. Which is kinda cooky, since the game (at least the Japanese edition) features an English voice-over. While there's still no word on when the game will be seeing an official (online-only) release in the US, a listing has appeared on the PlayStation UK site, saying it'll be "available on UMD for PSP and to download on PLAYSTATION 3 in May 2008". May's not that far away. It's next month, even!

Make Plane, Dress Up As Plane, Win Plane Game

And the entries are pouring in! Above, reader Daniel cosplays as an aeroplane. Here's what's going on: Dress up as an aeroplane or make a three dimensional aeroplane out of anything tangible, but paper. So you can't make CGI planes! And you can't draw them either! But, you can make them out of anything else as long as it's not paper. Rocks, clay, toothpicks, whatever! And remember, that means make and not build a plastic plane model you bought in the store. Send entries to kotakucontestATgmailDOTcom and, like all contests, don't forget to add a "Kotaku" sign. Remember, we're giving away two copies of the game and INTERNET FAME. Haven't figured out if we'll give one out to the best cosplay and one to the best 3D plane, though...

Treasure Tackling Two Wii Titles

Posted by Michael McWhertor at 12:40 PM on April 12, 2008

The latest issue of Nintendo Power, which is in the hands of subscribers right now features an interview with Masato Maegawa, the president of the beloved action game developer, whose Bangai-O Spirits is due to hit the Nintendo DS stateside this quarter. The Xbox Live Arcade remake of Ikaruga just went live, but Nintendo Power wants to know when Maegawa and crew will get some WiiWare titles out.

Maegawa says that they're looking into it, but that they already have two unannounced Wii games in development. Details are nonexistent other than the Treasure president teasing that "both games will have a lot of impact." Who wants to make some wagers?

Harmonix On Europe: Let Them Eat Cake

Posted by Luke Plunkett at 12:20 PM on April 12, 2008

Rock Band's impending European launch isn't getting the kind of PR Harmonix and MTV would like. Something about the price, or something. Well, feeling the sting of the internet barbs that have been slung their way, Harmonix have spoken out in defence of their pricing structure, with VP Greg LoPicolo posting on the official boards a ton of reasons why the game's going to be so expensive. Some seem entirely plausible, some a little less plausible (the guitars are made in China? They were for the US edition, too), all lead to him concluding his defence with this:

One Million Concurrent WoW Players In China

Posted by Mike Fahey at 12:00 PM on April 12, 2008

The9 Limited, the operators of World of Warcraft in China, has announced that they recently achieved a peak of one million players online at the same time. That's not the fudgy sort of numbers you get for subscribers either - that is one million World of Warcraft accounts online and playing at one time. That's the biggest number they've seen since the game launched there back in 2005. Of course there are 1.3 billion or so people living in China, so a million is just a drop in a bucket, but that's a very big drop in a absolutely gigantic bucket. To put things in perspective, if a million people stood on your head, your skull would be completely crushed. Them's skull-crushing numbers right there, and before you go blaming gold farming, keep in mind that these are Chinese servers, not people accessing servers outside of the country, so nya.

What will we do when GTAIV actually comes out? Play it for 1,000+ hours? How lame. We'd much rather waste our time on zany flash ads that only take 1 minute or 2 a pop. For instance, if you're as cool as us, you'll have an awkward conversation with a representative from Goldberg, Ligner & Shyster...which we're beginning to suspect may be more of an escort service than a law firm, but no harm, no foul.

Re: And The Best Food In Japan Is...

I woke up this morning to a pretty ugly sight: This post and its comments. I lost it a bit and wrote a rant and the reaction was mostly well-informed and thoughtful. Heck there were even some really good suggestions in it about ways to deal with the mob problem. I can't get into any details, but tech has been working on some possible interesting solutions. I've also made a couple of suggestions myself, so we're not just hoping the problem goes away. I'd like to think that some of the ideas will turn into something that improves the process for everyone.

What Are You Playing This Weekend?

Posted by Michael McWhertor at 7:30 AM on April 12, 2008

With a planned nine straight days of obligation gaming, defined as titles I might not necessarily play on my own time, I think I'll be taking it easy this weekend, doing my best to re-beat Ikaruga and keeping my hands controller free. I'd beaten the Dreamcast import version of Ikaruga a few months after its release, but I'm a credit feeder, never to be skilled enough to play with default, no-continue settings.

Outside of that, there's trip planning and taxes to be done, plus the odd housekeeping chore. Expect a very worn out set of Kotaku editors by next weekend, some who might swear games off forever. No joke! What you playing this weekend with your free time?

GameStop Details Fallout 3 Collector's Edition

Dammit, I knew I should have hit up eBay earlier. GameStop has the details on the collector's edition of Fallout 3 due out this spring, and some of the contents look rather familiar. For $US 20 more than the normal edition ($US 79.99 console, $US 69.99 PC), you'll be receiving the much-coveted Vault Boy bobble head in all its encephalitic glory, a hardcover Art of Fallout 3 book, a Making of Fallout 3 DVD, and the game itself. All of this comes neatly packaged in a completely customised Fallout 3 lunch box, which I now have in both broken and non-broken varieties, thanks to the lovely folks at Bethesda. This is one collector's edition that seems well worth an extra $US 20, unless of course you already own half of it.

Dan "Shoe" Hsu Leaves EGM/1Up

Posted by Brian Crecente at 5:20 AM on April 12, 2008

I was shocked today to read that long-time EGMer and guiding force Dan "Shoe" Hsu is leaving Ziff Davis Media and the 1Up Network for personal reasons. His last day will be April 25.

Shu is quick to point out that the decision was his alone and not one forced on him or dealing with any sort of lay offs, or connected in anyway to the recent news about Games for Windows. He says on his personal blog that after 11 years at the company it's time to move on.

It's with a heavy (and relieved) heart that I write this: I've tendered my resignation here at Ziff Davis Media and the 1UP Network. My last day here will be Friday, April 25.

This is my own decision; I'm not being forced out or laid off or anything like that. And this is not related to the recent news about Games for Windows: The Official Magazine (and I hope I'm not stealing any thunder away from those guys — that's not my intention here). It's just time for me to move on. I've been here, mostly with EGM, since April of 1996. That's 11 years (taking off one year when I did a brief stint at Gamers.com)...quite a long time!

While Hsu doesn't say where he's headed he does that that we will hear from him again in the near future.

love the videogame business too much to stay away (plus, I'm too old to become a professional snowboarder). Besides, I will miss you guys too much. You all have been fantastic. I sincerely appreciate all the support you've thrown my way over the years — and that, I'll never forget, either.

Thanks and good bye...for now.

I just hope it's still as a writer. The game industry doesn't need Hsu as much as we do.

Hit the jump for the official release naming Sam Kennedy as his replacement as Editorial Director for 1Up Network.

Amazon Doling Out Wii Deals Again

As for the timed special, so far all we've missed is Cabela's Big Game Hunter for $US 19.99, which is really no big loss. As this post goes live we're smack dab in the middle of Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock for $US 64.99, with new games coming at 2pm and 6pm Pacific time. Who knows what wondrous values await us?

Video Games Can Be A Rich And Magical Experience

Posted by Mike Fahey at 1:40 AM on April 12, 2008

Several of you have pointed us to an amazing opinion piece by Naomi Alderman at The Guardian titled "If we deny children access to all computer games, we deprive them of a rich and magical experience", a beautifully written response to recent events in the UK like the Byron Review and the banning of shocking Kane & Lynch advertisements. She praises Byron's report for touching on the many opportunities for fun and learning that computer games allow, and how we need to move away from the notion that computer games cause harm, and then points out how the print and television media reacted by warning parents about violent games and monitoring their children at all times. In short, they completely ignored the positive points and focused on the negative. Alderman paints a much brighter picture, though the quote that struck me as the most poignant was this:

The world of Grand Theft Auto does contain violence and misogyny; but then, so does The Godfather, or Goodfellas. So, for that matter, does The Iliad.

Hellgate: London Korea's Most Successful Launch

From worst to first! Just last month, Flagship's Hellgate: London made 1UP's list of the top five botched PC game launches of all time, with regular server crashes and people being billed multiple times for premium subscriptions. The Southeast Asian launch went even worse, with Infocomm Asia Holdings nearly wiping all player progress within the first 30 days of launch. It's amazing what a few months can do, because now Hellgate: London is being touted as Korea's most successful online game launch in 3 years. There are over a million active accounts, and the game is the 9th most-played game in the country. Sheesh. "To become the most successful launch in Korea for over three years is an incredible achievement," said Bill Roper, CEO of Flagship Studios.

"This milestone wouldn't have been possible for us to achieve without the incredible support of our publishing partner, Hanbitsoft, and our dedicated community in Korea."
Wow, that Hanbitsoft must have the most magical marketing team ever! Hit the jump for the press release, which actually contains the words 'Hellgate", 'Successful', and 'Launch', all in the same spot.

A Call to Ban

It seems there's a decision to be made: Do we want Kotaku to be represented by the chatter of a thousand voices, people trying to be heard over one another, many not stopping to think before they talk. Or do we want to cull the crowd, reduce the noise so our many intelligent readers can still be heard over the roar and those who speak take the time to think, to read before doing so.

It's disheartening to think that it has come to this, that unless we're talking about the relatively safe topics of consoles and their direct by-products there can't be intelligent discourse on Kotaku. And I don't understand how we've arrived here.
