Wait! You Might Not Want To Buy The Halo 3 Legendary Map Pack
Posted by Mark Wilson at 4:00 AM on April 16, 2008
Did we get your attention before it was Too Late? We hope so. Because if you were already interested in picking up Ninja Gaiden II, pre-ordering the game at Circuit City will score you the Halo 3 Legendary Map pack free. While the process isn't instantaneous, Circuit City will email you a redemption code within a week of your order. And seeing as Halo doesn't seem to be going anywhere in the near future, it could be a decent way to save yourself ten dollars 800 Microsoft Points.

How many maps does the pack contain ?! I've never purchased extra maps but 10 dollars looks way too expensive !
I bet they could've sold it for 2$ but went like: It's Halo stuff, they'll buy it for 10$ anyway !

@JustJake: Nah; this is not the same thing. Ninja Gaiden 2 is a big release in itself, contrarily to Crackdown, and a map pack for Halo 3 is a much smaller release than the Halo 3 beta. And there's an easy way to get the maps other than pre-ordering Ninja Gaiden 2, which wasn't the case with the Halo 3 beta.

Definitely true, and I agree... I paid $70 for the LE version of Halo 3, add in 2 map packs on top of that at $10 each and it's nearly a $100 game.... It gets a little pricey that's for sure. That's why I'm trying to score these maps for free with this deal! ;)

@HibikiRush: What I never understood is why the Legendary version didn't some with a little something more than a stupid helmet. What would have been the greatest was a special armor or game variant that only us suckers who got the version would be able to have.
Nothing along the lines of the flaming codpiece, but how about instead of the Hyabusa sword, one of those bright orange bicycle bike flags? That would be the bees knees.

@Shteve: ...I see what you did there! You acted like you didn't know anything about the pricing of DLC to make a point about how you think Halo 3's map packs are a ripoff! That was very clever.
I love how people complain that there is more expansion content for a game. Like Halo 3 didn't have a full multiplayer component at launch. Yeah, ok.

@NPlace: The best part is that back in the early 90s we would have committed grisly acts of violence for the opportunity to expand our console games with new maps and levels...but for some reason today it only pisses people off? I mean yeah, I'd love it if they were free myself, but you should either pay for them or don't, no amount of whining about what a rip off DLC is in general is going to change its price.

Is there any way to specify which maps you want to play? I know in COD4 it doesn't let you choose. I dropped 800 points on their map pack and then couldn't even find a match in one of the new maps. Fucking A! I rarely play Halo 3, but I'm not gonna make the same stupid ass mistake if I can't easily make use of the thing I just paid for.

@Snuffbox:
I wish people would stop comparing DLC to fast food. It's really getting old fast. Heres an idea: I don't buy fast food that often to start with becuase Its cheaper (and healthier) for me to make my own meals.
You fail to realize just how much DLC adds up. Theres a reason its called Mirco-transactions. Both map packs total $20. If halo 3 came out for $70 (game disc ONLY) and Bunggie and MS tried to defend the price by saying "bubub we gave you alot of maps!" there would be backlash.
This isn't about entitlement, this is about people taking advantage of a good deal. Hell, I wanted NG2 anyways so maybe I'll get this and dust off my copy of Halo 3 and get all six new maps for free now and play it again.
Free DLC keeps people happy, keeps people from trading games in. Some DLC for GRAW just got cut by 50%. Stuff like that is GREAT for the community and I wish that more older DLC got slashed in price.

@NPlace:
Well said- the sense of entitlement in the gaming community is absurd. Look at how much people pay for piecemeal add-ons for the Sims for comparison.
10 bucks is two meals at McDonald's for most Americans. I like saving money as much as anybody, but this is getting out of hand. Now I see people complaining about paying for DLC for GTA IV. Like you said, its not like the games were shipped in an incomplete form.

@BaronVonCrogs:
Fast food was just a convenient example. I could list a litany of other things that put the cost of DLC in perspective. I could easily substitute McDonald's for Starbucks OK? Non-sequitur, but OK.
Oh, and thanks for assuming that I "fail to realize how much DLC adds up." Really- I didn't know until now that I have no grasp of economics. Damn that Econ major that I (kinda) worked hard to get.
Tons of people, millions actually, fork over 60 bucks each year for roster updates in Madden. 10 bucks to give a game additional longevity is not a big deal.
Halo 3 was a complete multiplayer experience out of the box just like GTA IV will be. Without the potential for rewards for continued support of their products, developers would have all the incentive in the world to abandon released games. DLC gives a strong financial incentive for developers to stay in the game. Yes, it is entitlement that is responsible for all this bitching about paying for DLC- why should developers continue to make maps, etc. for these games?
It's the same sense of entitlement that causes people to complain about gas prices. World demand is irrelevant, I want to pay 2 bucks a gallon for gas!

Posted 9:58 AM 16/4/08
Well, it is hard not to have resentment for DLC when you do some comparing to the same PC versions of the games. PC games strongly benefit from user-created content which completely expands on the game. We are already paying a premium of $10 over PC games. Why is this? And why is it skyrocketing even higher with this DLC content?
There have been articles recently on Valve fighting to bring new Team Fortress 2 maps for free to the Xbox 360, as they have done for the PC. The reason? Customer appreciation and value. Yes you heard that right! Same story with Epic and map content for the UT3.
It's Microsoft who is controlling DLC pricing. And when you hear of instances where developers are having to fight over providing free content to the users, and situations where the DLC does not actually contain new content only a key that unlocks said content on disc (Beautiful Katamari -- whose DLC totaled up to be $20, thus negating its "budget" price if purchased), I can see why people are getting fed up.

@BaronVonCrogs: The first Halo 3 DLC did get slashed in price...to free. Doesn't get any better than that.
If you pay for the DLC in this case, you're paying for the premium of getting it early. If you want the DLC but don't want to pay, either don't pay, or wait 3-4 months.
