Was There An Earthquake Last Night?

To: Fahey
From: Ashcraft
RE: Too Much Cake

So last night (after a panic attack, mind you), I woke up at around 3am and the entire apartment was shaking. Felt like an earthquake, — though I didn't really see anything about it in the news. Then again, I didn't check.

I've only been in a few minor quakes here, and they were enough to give me quite the jolt. They always talk about the big one hitting... Well, bigger than the Great Hanshin Earthquake, and that one was pretty bad.

The Ghosbusters Box Art Doesn't Surprise Us

Have we seen this? I sure haven't! Here's what's apparently the box art of the multi-platform Ghostbusters. It's the Xbox 360 version, but all the other ones seem the same. The Ghostbusters logo — this is pretty much what we were expecting. And that's what makes it so damn great.

Pro Gamers Carrying Olympic Torch

Tim to carry the Olympic Torch. Who are you going to choose? Pro gamers! That's right, famous pro Warcraft III gamers Jae Ho "Moon" Jang and Li "Sky" Xiaofeng will be carrying it and will be joined by StarCraft players Junchun "Pj" Sha and Lei "Leilei" Shen. No clue when these gamer luminaries will be carrying the torch, but probably sometime before it reaches Beijing.

Is it me or is pro gaming is so 2007?

Cat Cuddling! Ear Cleaning! Boobs!

Besides featuring SNK characters with big jubblies (old hat!), DS title and romance sim Days of Memories 2 offers things like EAR CLEANING and CAT CUDDLING scenes. Sure, Days of Memories 2 is a repackaging of previous Days cell phone games, but hey! There's ear cleaning and cat cuddling, and even if there're not mini-games (they're not), stuff like that gives us a warm fuzzy feeling in our bellies.

Pandemic Itchin' To Start On Mercs 3

Pandemic are putting their shoulder to the wheel for Mercenaries 2. Don't doubt that for a minute. But at the same time, they're probably sick to death of all the palm trees and blue skies and threats from the Venezuelan government that have marked the game's development. So it's understandable they they just want to get it done and move onto the next Mercenaries, right?:

Behold! Carrot Plane Made of Carrot

We're speechless, so let reader filip fill us in:

Here is my plane.
This is the carrot plane,it is made of carrot.
Yumm!
We're still speechless, so allow us to copy and paste: To bring everyone up to speed: Dress up as an aeroplane OR make a three dimensional aeroplane out of anything tangible, but paper. So you can't make CGI planes! And you can't draw them either! But, you can make them out of anything else as long as it's not paper. Rocks, clay, toothpicks, whatever! And remember, that means make and not build a plastic plane model you bought in the store. Send entries to kotakucontestATgmailDOTcom by this Friday at midnight PST and, like all contests, don't forget to add a "Kotaku" sign. Remember, we're giving away two copies of Ace Comabt 6 and INTERNET FAME. One copy for the best plane cosplay, the other for the best crafted plane. In short, two separate contests. Those keen on seeing a plane cosplay, hit the jump for Sean's entry. There's a bucket involved!

Enterbrain Back Slowly Away From "New DS" Prediction

Earlier this week, according to Bloomberg, Enterbrain president Hirokazu Hamamura predicted a new DS would be unveiled at E3. You'd think he'd be the kind of guy - what with his company publishing Famitsu and all - to get that sort of thing right. But Nintendo quickly came out and, rather than say "no comment", went so far as to say "no dice". Now, Enterbrain themselves have felt the need to issue a statement, denying that Hamamura predicted any such thing.

He did not...make a comment about the possibility of an announcement by Nintendo concerning a new model or successor to the Nintendo DS due to its current scarce product availability caused by its worldwide popularity.
Maybe they're right, maybe Bloomberg are right, but either way, who am I to stand in the way of a good old-fashioned corporate back-tracking expedition? Full statement's after the jump if you're interested.

Infinity Ward have sorted the PS3 version of Call of Duty 4's downloadable content out, and have announced a pair of release dates for the new maps. North Americans can expect them next Thursday, April 24, while it'll be turning up in Europe a little later, on May 1. PC owners...still nothing, I'm afraid. Maintain your vigils.

Iroha Ravaged

Revealing! Taken advantage of! SNK has licensed out Samurai Spirits character Iroha for the Queen's Gate art books. Titled On wo Kaseu Mono Iroha (Debt Replaying Iroha), the book is fully licensed by SNK and illustrated by Tasuku Iizuki. Queen's Gate is a spin-off of Queen's Blade, which is a Lost Worlds style "combat picture book game." Though, Queen's Blade is so MAXIMUM RISKY. Don't believe us? Of course not! Not safe for work pics after the jump.

European 360 Sales "More Than Doubled" After Price Cut

That price cut seems to have done the trick. Microsoft are reporting that, in the weeks since they slashed the prices on all three 360 models, the console's sales have doubled. Sorry, "more than doubled". I'd just love to tell you how many consoles that actually equates to, but this being Europe, sales data trackers ChartTrack don't think you need that kind of information, so a "more than doubled" statement is all we're going to get. And while we can assume the console has indeed sold in healthy numbers, without real numbers to back that up, or to show how many it was selling before the cuts (and how many the PS3 and Wii are selling), it's all a bit pointless, isn't it? A celebratory presser entirely devoid of hard sales data follows.

The Erotic Games EXPLOSION

Back in the 1980s, folks in Japan didn't really play erotic computer games. They were busy doing other things, 1980s things like making cassette mix-tapes and wearing Ray Ban Wayfarers. So like, it shouldn't come as a surprise that only 22 erotic games were released. That's nothing! There were probably 22 erotic games released this month alone. As website Canned Dogs points out, the big boom didn't happen until visual novels Shizuku Kizuato and To Heart were released in 1996 and 1997. By 1999, the number of ero releases spiked to 400 games. Last year, almost 550 erotic games went on sale. Compare that to the 360 games released on Japanese consoles last year. There are more ero games! That doesn't mean the erotic game market is bigger, just smuttier.

Look, There On The Ground, It's WiiMan

Ladies and gentlemen: WiiMan. He won't save the day, but he will at least bring a smile to it, with his shiny white cape, rampant Nintendo fanboyism and snappy Zorro mask. Oh, and his super powers: the suit's a fully-functioning Wii Remote, complete with Bluetooth, IR cam, accelerometer and even working face buttons. All that, and not a single dwarf or urine joke in sight. Well done everyone involved.

Korea Goes Totally Overboard With Zack & Wiki Promo

When the Wii finally launches in Korea next week, one of the games available will be Zack & Wiki. How do you sell a game like Zack & Wiki to the Korean market? With mousepads. Oh, and the promise of riches. Everyone who preorders the game will get two bits of merch: a mousepad and a small treasure chest filled with treasure-shaped candy. Except not all the chests contain candy. One hundred of them will contain a pearl necklace. A real, pearl necklace. This would be the part where I'd say I wished we could have gotten pearl necklaces with our preorders, but...hrm. I won't.

Today Was A Good Day For Celebrity Miis

Yes, celebrity Miis are done. So 2007. 2006, even. But putting celebrity Miis into context, and onto real-world bodies, that's a little fresher. Slobs of Gaming are running 14 pictures using just that premise, and while most of them range from sucky to very sucky, a handful shimmer, like Jesus rays poking elegantly through a night-black stormcloud.

Namco Bandai Editor's Day: And the Rest...

While there was a lot to look at at the Namco Bandai Editor's Day, there were a couple things that were announced that weren't available for checking out.

First up is Naruto: Ultimate Ninja. The game will be rendered in full 3D including all the backgrounds and the battles. It will be an exclusive to the PS3 platform as well as the first Naruto game to be presented in full 3D.

Next we heard about Namco's answer to Nintendogs, National Geographic Panda. Raise and train your own panda with its own distinct personality right on your DS.

While Naruto isn't exactly my thing, something about that Panda game has me a little intrigued. It would be awesome if you could train it to maul your enemies, but I suppose that isn't exactly National Geographic's MO. Too bad really.

You can check out the press release for both games after the jump.

Sony Still Fixing Canadian PS3 Pricing

You know, I could have sworn Sony fixed the problem of over-charging Canadian PS3 owners last October, but hey, maybe they didn't. Or did a half-arsed job. Or the US dollar got even weaker against the Canadian dollar. Maybe all of the above! Point is, Sony's Peter Dille has jumped into the comments section of his blog post yesterday on the PS3, assuring Canadian consumers: read more »

Guess What We Didn't Find in the OFLC Board Report For GTA IV?

oflc_report.jpgWell, this is certainly an eye-opener.

Tipster Mick managed to get his hands on the Office of Film & Literature Classification's report for Grand Theft Auto IV. It's not very large at three pages, but it's more than enough for us to find out what we want to know.

Firstly, the violence. The OFLC doesn't see it as anything out of the ordinary for the MA15+ rating, describing it as "hand to hand combat (basic punching and kicking) [that] more regularly involves use of various weapons". It does make particular mention of what you can do to corpses: "Blood pooling occurs under bodies that are shot at after death however no post mortem damage (such as decapitation or dismemberment) is possible". You'll remember that it was decapitation and dismemberment that got Soldier of Fortune: Payback and Dark Sector in trouble with the board. There's also a few words given to the "ability of the player to set an enemy alight causing them to burn", though it notes that this is infrequent.

The board marked the usage of the words "fuck", and a lot less frequently, "cunt". It also talks of a cut scene where a drug dealer "is depicted implicitly, then explicitly, snorting lines of white powder (implied to be cocaine) from a table".

It also looks like prostitution got through unscathed, with the OFLC stating "when picking up a prostitute, the player is depicted in a car where he parks and honks the horn. The woman enters the car and the camera angle switches to the view of the number plate. While the car is visibly moving up and down, only audio cues are heard".

Fascinating, indeed, but what is more interesting is what the report doesn't mention.

Namco Bandai Editor's Day: PowerUp Forever

There was only one XBLA/PSN game on display at yesterday's Editor's Day, but boy was it a doozy. PowerUp forever is what Namco describes as a "fractal shooter". You fly your ship around an open space taking out the wild enemies all around you. As you destroy the enemies, your ship starts growing larger as the enemies and space around you grow smaller. But, being big isn't all it's cracked up. The larger you get, the more enemies realise you are there and soon you may find yourself overwhelmed. Avoiding enemy bullets and contact with the enemies themselves becomes a harder and harder task the bigger you become.

US EB Games Try For The GTA IV Funnies

Yes, yes, GameStop/EB Games are a cold, soulless, ruthless international corporation. But sometimes, just sometimes, someone gets into their system with a little spark. A sense of what it is to be truly human. That person's started writing up the site's legal disclaimers regarding pre-orders, with their GTAIV notice warning customers they can't be held accountable for their "delivery driver's truck getting stolen". Or, if you've ordered MGS4, any possible "inclement weather or Octocamo malfunctions". Not necessarily funny, just...unexpectedly cute.

Spielberg And Michael Bay Are Plotting Against Me

Uwe Boll sure as shit knows how to promote a movie. (Bummer he doesn't know how to make a movie.) With Postal coming out May 23, he's already got a 200,000 signature strong internet petition to get him to stop direction. Think Boll will stop directing? Never! About that petition, Boll says:

I tracked down who's signing that petition, and these are like a few people, getting under different identities and things in the internet and signing it over and over again. The second thing is that I was able to find that actually Michael Bay and Steven Spielberg under various different identities posting ongoing that I should stop making movies, and I know why: They are afraid of the competition. What jealous internet nerds and wannabe filmmakers are signing that petition?

Konami ID Dojo: "System Is Very Busy Now"

Didn't much like the Smash Bros Dojo. Thought it was kinda stupid. Drip-fed, inane PR at its very worst, even. Nothing wrong with the format itself, though, which is much better suited towards cataloguing a clusterfuck, like the one Konami have orchestrated for their Metal Gear Online beta. Latest news from the front: the site itself isn't even working properly, let alone the beta signup process. We've had emails from users reporting that their application's keep pinging out, while my own application hasn't gotten any further than the message you can see above. Not very encouraging, this. If they can't handle some simple password sign-ups, what are they going to do when June 12 comes around?

RE: Let's Talk About Luke's Dinner

I actually tried making Yorkshire pudding today. You'd think it'd be easy to get a dog that tiny into the oven, but damn. Little teeth marks all over my hands. Last time I go to Luke for recipe advice.

Ever have one of those days where you sit in a chair in front of your computer from the time you wake up until you're ready to fall asleep, desperately trying to keep up with the latest gaming news and silently cursing your absent boss in both name and spirit for deciding to take a week to go the distance, for speed, leaving you all alone (ALL ALONE) in a time of need? Me neither. I think I've just got too much Cake on my playlist. YA! Yep. Too much Cake.
