Medic! Hands On With The New TF2 Map Plus New Medic Achievements And Weapons Revealed
Posted by Flynn De Marco at 3:30 AM on April 17, 2008
Valve had a nice little gathering of souls last night at Blondie's Bar and No Grill here in SF to show of the new Team Fortress 2 map, Goldrush. If you are reading this, you are probably a big Team Fortress 2 fan, so I'll skip explanations of the game and dive right into the details.
First of all, I loved the look of it. The name certainly describes what the map was like, looking like something out of Disney's Big Thunder Mountain railroad ride. Lots of wooden structures, water towers and mine car tracks. But the map isn't just a new area, it also features a new gameplay type called Payload. Basically how it works is this: the map has three separate areas and players are split into offensive and defensive teams. The goal of the offensive team is to push a mine cart loaded with explosives through the map, capturing the defensive team's bases as they go. The cart moves faster depending on how many people are surrounding it and leaving it unattended will cause it to start rolling back towards the beginning again. The other team of course, tries to stop the payload from reaching it's goal.
The map wasn't the only thing going however. We were also privy to the new item system that will be instituted with the next update. This also ties in with the thirty six new achievements for the Medic class. By gathering some or all of the new achievements, you can gain three new unique items. One third of the achievements will net you The Blutauger, a new syringe gun. This weapon does not give critical damage, but instead sucks health from the enemy on impact. Earn two thirds of the achievements and you will get The Critzcrieg, a new medigun that will rapid fire critical rockets. Getting all the achievements will see you receiving The Ubersaw which takes melee combat damage and converts it into Ubercharge. Four direct hits with it will charge up whatever Medigun your Medic has currently equipped.
Team Fortress fans are going to have a field day with this new map and if you want to get all those new weapons (and I know you do) take a gander at all 36 achievements after the jump!
First Do No Harm: Play a full round without killing any enemies and score the highest on a team of six or more players
Quadruple Bypass: Heal a teammate who is taking fire form four enemies at once
Group Health: Work with two other medics to deploy three simultaneous Ubercharges
Surgical Prep: Have an Ubercharge ready before the set up phase ends
Trauma Queen: Deploy three Ubercharges in less than five minutes and assist in five kills during that time
Double Blind Trial: deploy an Ubercharge within eight seconds of a nearby enemy medic deploying his
Play Doctor: In a team with no Medics, be first to switch to Medic after a teammate calls medic and heal 500 health
Triage: Deploy an Ubercharge on a teammate less than a second before they are hit by a critical explosive
Preventative Medicine: Block the enemy from capturing a control point with an Ubercharged teammate
Consultation: Assist a fellow Medic in killing five enemies in a single life
Does It Hurt When I Do This?: Kill fifty Scouts with your syringe gun
Peer Review: Kill fifty Medics with your bone saw
Big Pharma: Assist a heavy in killing thirty enemies where neither of you die
You'll Feel a Little Prick: Assist in killing four enemies with a single Ubercharge on a Scout
Autoclave: Assist in burning eight enemies with a single Ubercharge on a Pyro
Blast Assist: Assist in exploding five enemies with a single Ubercharge on a Soldier
Blunt Trauma: Assist in punching out for enemies with a single Ubercharge on a Heavy
Medical Breakthrough: Assist in destroying eight enemy Engineer buildings with a single Ubercharge on a Demoman
Midwife Crisis: Heal an Engineer as he repairs his sentry gun while it's under enemy fire
Ubi Concordia, Ibi Victoria: Assist in killing five enemies on an enemy control point in a single life
Grand Rounds: Heal two hundred teammates after they have called for Medic
Infernal Medicine: Extinguish one hundred burning teammates
Doctor Assisted Homicide: Assist in killing twenty nemeses
Placebo Effect: Kill five enemies in a single life, while having your Ubercharge ready but undeployed
Sawbones: Hit enemies with your bone saw ten times in a row without dieing or missing
Intern: Accumulate seven thousand heal points in a single life
Specialist: Accumulate ten thousand heal points in a single life
Chief of Staff: Accumulate ten million total health points
Hypocritical Oath: Kill an enemy spy that you have been healing
Medical Intervention: Save a falling teammate from dying on impact
Second Opinion: Ubercharge two teammates at once
Autopsy Report: Provide an enemy with a freeze cam shot of you taunting above their ragdoll
FYI I am a Medic: use a bone saw to kill five enemy spies who have been calling for Medic
Family Practice: Ubercharge ten of your steam community friends
House Call: Join a game that one of your friends is in and then deploy an Ubercharge on him
Bedside Manner: be healing a teammate as he achieves an achievement of his own

Don't get your hopes up as console people aren't apparently in the loop as far as TF2 goes.
I can hold out hope that my 360 TF2 experience gets better.

@Pezdispenser: just play dustbowl-only servers and make sure you're healing someone when/if your team defends the map without losing a point. it doesn't happen that often but when it does you always see a list of about 5 people come up on the HUD who've just earned that achievement so if you're healing someone, the odds are you'll unlock that one. that's really the only way you can predict when someone's going to get an achievement because so many people still don't have that one and you know exactly when it'll get unlocked.

I think what will be more likely to happen:
Medic 1: Haha! SOlider lets go with all Crit Rockets!
Solider1: Yeah!!!
New Medic (Other Team): Umm...I have an uber ready...
Heavy: Uber Me!
Uber Heavy vs. Critting Solider
Winner: Uber Heavy

I think the wording on the new Medigun is extremly poor Mr. Flynn de Marco.
"The Critzcrieg, a new medigun that will rapid fire critical rockets" does NOT explain what it does.
The difference is, that instead of your Medigun target going invulnable when you use the Übercharge, they get 100% crits as long as your charge lasts.
Please reword this for the sake of those not in the know.

Great so they're separating the community into have and have-nots based on whether or not you do nothing but play TF2.
I enjoy TF2 on an occasional basis, and looking at that list I'd get maybe two of those. Why should I get less play options just because I don't devote my life to playing the game? I paid the same amount of money for the game that everyone else did.
If they keep up with this they're basically going to create a game that's totally unapproachable for newbies and more casual players. It'll be a wasteland of obnoxious 14 years olds with all the upgrades.

@Hoboman725: That was poorly worded. What the thing really does is that it's ubercharge target won't be invulnerable, but every shot will be a critical one.

a medic gun that fires crit rockets? i hope that's a typo or just explained wrong. medics are supposed to help their team, an achievement that'll encourage medics to ubercharge scouts instead of useful classes. do they even think these things through at all?
i like playing the game when the completely luck-based nature of the game happens to go my way and medic is my favourite class, i'd already have unlocked half these achievements by now if they were in the game. i also like the sound of the new map but valve are just complete idiots sometimes. a pyro can kill a medic in half a second except the times when it takes 10 of constant fire, a crit headshot kills instantly except when it doesn't, a wrench kills in one hit except when it kills in 5 etc. every valve game is the same and i don't know why they think anyone could enjoy having how well they do in the game dictated by random calculations rather than their own skill.

Getting ten thousand heal points in a single life isn't really that hard, if you're playing the medic conservatively and hanging back to buff / heal your whole team. it's the ones like blowing up eight structures with a demo man that'll be a challenge - though I guess you could just rush the third stage of dustbowl with an über and take out all the assorted crap engineers usually build in the first bottleneck.

@Stevedroid: I wouldn't be too worried. Remember back in the day when they had plans for another type of medi-gun? Seems like when they added it into play, they realized that it unbalanced the game. I trust that Valve has spent a hell of a lot of time playtesting to make sure that it doesn't screw up the game's mechanics. And is it really that bad if this encourages more people to go Medic? I hate being the only Medic on a 15 man team.

@Idontloveyou: Thanks to achievements such as "Big Pharma," probably 1% or less of the Steam community will have all three items. I don't know a single heavy who has had 30 kills in one life. Chances of someone actually achieving it and you staying alive and healing him the whole game? High, assuming you cheat. Otherwise, ain't happenin'.

I also hope they can do some pretty interesting stuff for the other, less varied classes... sure, with Medics, Engineers, even Demomen, I can see some great achievements... but scouts, pyros, soldiers, etc? Apart from "kill a lot of dudes," I hope they can come up with something original
Scorpi
Scorpi
Posted 5:56 AM 17/4/08
Some of those achievements are awesome - I can imagine a lot of servers being devoted just to getting all the achievements.
I have a few nagging questions, though... will achievements work retroactively? Will someone who's been playing Medic since Orange Box first came out already have half of these? I hope so, it's only fair, and the game does keep track of a lot of records...
Also, are engineers useless on the offensive team in Goldrush or what?
Scorpi
Vodun
Posted 6:55 AM 17/4/08
@Scorpi: Engineers are always useless for the attacker...because it makes the team pussy foot around actually attacking and always pull back to the sentry/dispenser.
I can see these achievements causing a bit of grief when medics try to get them, rather than heal...
Vodun

Posted 6:43 AM 17/4/08
@Cathaoir: XD Thanks, but that was a time when I mained Sniper. He is one of my least favorite classes now, and I only use him for no-scope fights or to melee people. But I'd be lucky if I can get 10 in a row without dying now. I main Spy, Pyro, and Scout now. :D
As for heavy achievements...
I Crush Coward Toys!: Punch a level 3 sentry and destroy it without the assistance of a medic.
I Spy With My Little Eye!: Punch a spy and send his ragdoll 20 feet or above away.
Engineer Is Credit To Team!: Fire 5,000 rounds in one life.
Hmmm...as for the items... They could make a Minigun with half the ammo but with no speed reduction...but then again I think almost everyone would prefer that over the default one...
They could make one with no crits but 300 ammo! That might be interesting. Perhaps a little rigged on no crit servers. XD
They could make the fists do less damage but send the enemy back with each hit...Sending enemies into your teams Sentry will make for some very interesting assists.
...And as for the shotgun, I'd rather them just release two upgrades for the minigun. But if they had to do something with the shotgun, they could lessen the amount of ammo it can hold in a clip/altogether or remove crits/lower damage to make it so that each successive shotgun hit gives you Minigun ammo. That'd make it pretty interesting...

Also worth keeping in mind - a lot of these achievements look really difficult, yes, but once you've got one of the new weapons they'll become increasingly easy - and practical.
Given the firing rate, if you have the Critzcreig, ubering a Scout actually becomes reasonably practical. Similarly, given the way Engies set up on the second point, second stage of Dustbowl, those eight destructs won't be quite so hard - especially if some well-placed crit stickies will do the job.
They're difficult, but they need to be - otherwise the game balance would be ruined. You'll maybe find one game in a hundred in which anyone at all has the Ubersaw - and that's the way it should be.

@Stevedroid: What, you mean like how someone who plays WoW obsessively would have much better weapons and armor than a casual player, and thus would trounce them in PvP? Any game that doesn't reward you for playing more, especially online and multiplayer, would look very out of place.
Also, I think at least as many people would be complaining if the acheivements were easy rather than hard. Even in this thread there have been "I would have half of these already" and "lol happens without trying" comments admidst the admitedly more common "ach! to hard, no one will ever make it!" types. Clearly not only can they not please everybody, it appears difficult to please anyone at all.

@Dangeresque: I know Gundam is dirty but I love 00: if they spit on 360 owners, they piss on PS3 owners. And splooge on Mac owners.
Originally, he was whining about how "stupid" a technology direction that Intel's dual-core CPUs was - whining that it was a waste to bother to learn how to support it.
While I'm in awe of TF2 & HF2, Gabe's a lazy scoundrel for not rolling up his (well, his development teams') sleeves, getting off the pot and not writing for only one freaken architecture. And dumb, since beating the learning curve on these would be an investment for future efforts.
Awesome upcoming update, though. Don't get me wrong. Just wish they were less myopic.

@Vodun: Right....Or they create a teleporter that changes the entire tide of the fight. Or a sentry thats positioned in a spot that makes it difficult for the enemy to even come out of their base, cornering them. People will "pussyfoot" to the nearest health pack anyway, so it makes little difference when it comes to retreating.

@Elite Wombat: ...This is hard for me to explain, but... well, Valve doesn't love us. They spit on us.
And also, they would have to change some of the achievements if they brought it to 360, to accomodate the lower player cap on servers. Otherwise, it literally will be impossible with some of these.
I understand wanting to make these tricky to get, but some of these are just stupid hard, Valve. Be fair, please. ...And give Spy new toys next.

I am very upset at Valve's German. Blutauger (I've also seen Blutsaugher) should Blutsauger, as in Blut (Blood) Sauger (sucker). Critzcrieg should be Critz (not a real word, a play on Blitz which is lightning), and Krieg (war).
I am so disappointed in you Valve, yet I will still play.

@icelight:
Yes. When did I say I wouldn't apply the same gripe to other games? In fact I despise MMOs for much that reason. They're explicitly made to be time sinks and reward players who keep sending in their subscription every month.
I'd argue that there's no such thing as a casual PvP player for that reason - it'd be futile.
I don't know what you mean by any game that doesn't reward you for playing obsessively would be out of place. We're talking about a competitive action game here, not an RPG. With the exception of Call of Duty 4, every other MP action game I know of puts their players on equal footing.
Obviously yes there are large skill differences between players, but at least your on equal grounds in terms of equipment and features available to you. I mean with these changes you're giving an advantage to the players who are already more skilled than others.
I'm all for getting more people to play medic, but imagine this same concept applied to other classes. Yes a casual player is going to get their butt kicked regardless, but at least before they had access to the same tools as everyone else. Now not only do they get their butt kicked, but the miss out on getting to play around with the new content.

Hopefully they can pass on the love to us console players. I already have it for the 360 and would love to get TF2 for the PC but my PC is 6 years old and hasn't had any real upgrades (other than an added 160gb hard drive and upgrading the video card a while back from a 32mb one to a 128mb GeForce 5200). Here's to hoping for it coming to the 360.

Wow, sounds interesting. I do hope the Critzcrieg does indeed make your target fire criticals, and not yourself. Critzcrieg'd Heavys and Pyros ftw.
As for the achievements, sounds like fun - but some are just way too situational to ever occur on a normal basis. It wouldn't surprise me if people just joined empty servers with friends to coordinate to get them - which is pretty lame, but I wouldn't blame them.

I am estatic, and yet sad. Estatic, because 90% of these achievements will be very, very easy for me to get with my playing style.
Sad, because I'm STILL waiting on my new computer and this only reminds me that it's been 2 months, 16 days, and 7 hours since I last played Team Fortress 2.
I mean, I'm starting to wonder if it's *me* growing crazy and not just the rest of the world.
Here's an example. Today, I noticed I was being followed by some random guy, so I did the only logical thing; quickly turned around and punched him in the gut. And he actually got MAD. He didn't even listen to my explanation. ("Hey, I was only spychecking!") And in his defense, it's kind of lame that whatever admin is running IRL has friendly fire turned on. Kind of messed up, if you ask me.
That, and I can't remember the last time I saw an engineer. Might just need to empty my trunk of the scrap metal I've been collecting. Speaking of which, I can't REMEMBER the last time I saw anyone in uniform, or at least wearing just red or blue!
Maybe the whole damn world's gone crazy, and it's not the withdrawal everyone tells me about. Spies, the lot of them probably.
God help me.
Send medics.

@Stevedroid:
I'm going to have to say I have no idea where you're coming from based on these achievements. Without getting into the arguement of time invested is proportional to reward in gaming, the grand majority of these achievements have little to do with time invested.
Quadruple Bypass, Double Blind Trial, Preventative Medicine, Surgical Prep, Midwife Crisis and etc are all things that should or happen with proper coordination via voice chat or just during the course of normal solo play.
First Do No Harm, Intern, Specialist, Triage, Placebo Effect, Sawbones, and etc are all individual skill based. I suppose you could make the arguement that you need time playing to go from sucking to the appropriate amount of skill required to hit them, but at the same time that's true of ANYTHING whether it be Team Fortress or writing research papers or playing baseball or building skyscrapers. The only way to get better at something is to do it.
The rest of them are things that you will have to work out over time, yes, but there's entirely reasonable. We're not talking raiding Molten Core for 4 hours every day for a year to get your tier 1. I know I've killed at least 50 scouts with since the game was out, and I heal on average good run close to 7K a life.
Play for 10 hours a week for a month and I'll bet you have close to half of them.

If you're OCD, a lot of these achievements will take a few friends and 30 minutes on a self made server.
The new syringe gun is incredibly easy to unlock. The crit medigun is fairly easily achievable in short order (though I can't see using it much myself) especially with a batch of folks determined to help each other. The Ubersaw... now that one will actually be a bit of an achievement since no matter how you slice it... 10 million healing points is gonna take a while. :)

@Hostile: I'm going to call Shenanigans. When I play medic I get about 20,000 heal points per map, easy. that means 5 games is a million heal points. So we'll say 50 games playing primarily as medic. Lets say an average game takes 30 minutes. Multiplied out, that makes 25 hours of medic time to get the achievement, give or take. If you've played for 100 hours and don't have 10 million heal points, you're doing it wrong.
