Someone mentioned it already, but it wouldn't work. The games play differently. One of the games would have to bend to fit the design of the other, and that would never happen.

Alternatively, the game could be some sort of combination of the two styles. But that runs the risk of alienating fans of both series.

Street Fighter vs. Mortal Kombat is one of those gaming ideas that sounds good in theory, but in practice, would never work. Those games play entirely differently from one another. Plus, how would you handle fatalities?

I really hope that they make a Mortal Kombat Vs. Street Fighter game one day. I've wanted to see that since I was 10 years old.

I don't think Capcom would have a problem with fatalities either. So you'd be able to do a Hyper Combo Finish, and then follow it up by ripping your opponent's spine out.

I'd be all for MK vs SF as long as it isn't developed by Midway (moreso Capcom). It's been apparent for quite some time now that they can't make a 3d fighter worth squat.

Hell, Shaolin Monks had a better fighting engine than any of the 3d MKs', and that game wasn't even developed by Midway.

People saying "it would have to be SFII's engine" are full of it. It shouldn't be either engine since it wouldn't feel natural to play MK characters with an SF engine, and it wouldn't feel right to play SF characters on an MK engine. It should have been a new system built just for that game, taking the best elements of both.
