Senior Producer David Robinson talks up the upcoming stylish slasher Afro Samurai. It is, he says, a game "carved out of style." Sounds like it, you can cut up a person anyway you want, none of it pre-canned animation. You can cut of body parts, nose, fingers. Sounds pretty damn cool.
for me the most innovative thing about this game is the music-animation system.
even if it doesn't meet expectations, it surely will set a precedent where a AAA title begins to do what guitar hero and audiosurf did, which is match gameplay to the music.
The visuals look great, loved the anime, but I'm gonna wait and see how it controls based off of play tests before I stop being so cautious. But it looks sweet!
@Shteve: I wouldn't say he's "a stereotypical Afro-American". He doesn't really seem to have a "stereotypical" personality if you watched the anime. Maybe it's the long flowing Afro and the fact that he smokes? Also, it takes place in Japan, not China.
Like Chupakun said, the movement looks a little stifled, and we'll have to wait until, maybe, a demo comes out or something to really see how the combat is going to work out. It'll all nice an good if you can slice off random body parts, but if you're limited to repetitive moves or a completely useless/unneeded countering system, then it won't matter. But, right now I don't know what it'll be like, so I'll hold of on my judgements.

There's been Samuraï Western which bring a Samuraï into the old, Cowboy time, United States ...
Than there is Afro Samuraï which bring an stereotypical Afro-American into the old China ... ?
I'm not quite sure about what to think about this one ...
The ingame scenes reminded me of Musashi 2. I have a feeling that it's going to play like that.
I really like the idea of the music changing tempo as you get combos or counterattacking or whatnot. Could have given us a sample of what kind of music is in the game though(yes, I can guess based on the anime).

I'm definitely gonna be looking at this in the future but, I'd really like to see some multiplayer as well. Something like a Bushido Blade - 1 hit can kill - kind of deal.
They say there will be enough in the game to make you want to play it through 3 times but, if it ends up being a short game, those 3 play-throughs won't be enough. Throw multiplayer in and you've got instant extra longevity to make the game feel like it's worth the $60USD.
I have high expectations for this game, I really hope they pull off everything they're boasting here.
Which is odd, because I'm usually very skeptical when people try to add in dynamic systems because they always fall short, they're either lackluster or predictable. And here they're doing dynamic animation, path finding and music. Talk about stacking the chips. But still, for some reason I believe they're doing it.
We already know that it's visually intense, they have the original voice actors and even RZA is their musical coordinator. Seems like they know what they're doing so far.

@Generico: I suggest you crack open an good US History book. Surely after reading that you would understand why a white guy killing tons of black people would be a far more touchy subject than a black samurai dude chopping up other Japanese samurai. Not saying that I agree. Just saying that I as a black person can certainly understand why it would be a tricky subject.

Looks nice.
Once game I can think of that came close to full dismemberment was Jedi Knight 2, but it needed a cheat code to enable. Then you could just swing a lightsaber and detach any joint on someone. Sometimes after diving into a crowd and thrashing there would just be a pile of singed mismatched parts. Pretty brutal for Star Wars actually, which I guess is why it was disabled.
Other than that, I draw a blank, but I remember either in Samurai Shodown (4?) or Last Blade you could sometimes finish someone by cutting in half (same animation every time) and they would do the classic "stop. look surprised. slide into two parts. fall down" act. That was pretty shocking for a 2D fighter.
