Assassin's Creed PC Patched, DirectX 10.1 Support Silently Killed Off
Posted by Luke Plunkett at 9:30 PM on April 23, 2008
Like its PS3 predecessor, the PC version of Assassin's Creed has launched with a few...problems. As in, it constantly crashes. Good news is a patch is on the way, which will fix the "majority of issues reported by fans". Bad news (for graphics whores) is that Ubisoft had to cut DirectX 10.1 support in order to get it working. Which, you know, isn't bad at all, since actually being able to play the game surely outweighs whatever minuscule advantages you were enjoying with 10.1. Doesn't it?

@Agies: I'm with you, although I loved AC's story, particularly where they took it at the end. I'm eagerly awaiting a sequel considering the possibilities they presented.

@jp182: AC was a good game. If it was half as long or had more variety it would have been a great game. Given how many people bought it, I think there's only a vocal minority that actually hated the game.

Gee, not even DX10 compared to DX9 is worth paying any premium or sacrificing performance for, if you ask me.
Take the flagship for DX10 (or, meant to be) that is Crysis. If you mod the "High" (DX9) settings to use "Very High" variables, it still runs in DX9 and looks almost identical to DX10 in "Very High". Normally, "Very High" is only available on Vista (DX10 mode). Look it up, you'll see what I mean.
Anyhow, I bought AC and beat it before they released a patch for the PS3, and yes I had about 3 to 4 freezes in total - but only in loading sequences (strange enough). Then again, I played roughly 10 hours straight with no pause, so I take those lockups happily for it, as long as they don't happen every hour.

Can they make a patch that stops it being mind-bendingly tedious?

Wow....well I guess I'm in the minority here because the DX9 version isn't crashing for me and I actually like the game. The story isn't too dry to me and it's a good game to play here and there; an hour at a time.

Actually, the game is quite bad to begin with. I found the storyline to be extremely dry - felt as if I was playing a demo test for a new upcoming PC engine.

I learned my lesson about Ubisoft when my PS3 copy of Assassin's Creed froze mid-game for the fourteenth time (literally) and I got up to force yet another reboot. They aren't the worst company but man did Assassin's Creed make me boycott their products for the foreseeable future...

@GingerMohawk:
The game probably went gold a good while ago. I don't think it's the developers that insist on releasing them unfinished but the publishers, as well. The problem is that manufacturing, advertising, and distribution all rely on the game being released in a timely manner and a publisher like Ubisoft is going to send out an unfinished product rather than push back the release date rather than take a hit with manufacturers and retailers and such.

Two stories about badly rushed PC ports from Ubisoft in one day? It must suck working for Ubi these days, where getting the game out by the deadline is more important than making it good/work.

why does it matter?
AC is such a catastrophically poor game, it's probably better if people don't suffer through it.
Seriously AC was the worst game I ever played. It didn't even qualify as a "game" for most part, as the core "gameplay" often consisted of pressing a button at leisure to advance another unskippable cutscene.
zero skill used, zero challenge, zero satisfaction, AC was all hype and no gameplay

Why do game developer insist in releasing unfinished games onto the market and then provide patches x amount of days/weeks/months later, they could have just fixed it in the first place.

DX10.1 was giving a 20% frame rate boost when using AA to those 10.1 ATi cards (and let's face it - ATi cards need that AA performance boost). ;)

Yes it does, DX10.1 isn't all that, frankly it shouldn't sway your support in favour of a graphics card.

crashes? what are you talking about, I can play the game for 4 hours straight, without crashing.
The crashes I DO get are related to video-drivers and my classic-xbox controller
also, good to know ubisoft is patching.

Umm what game is he referring to? I have had one crash in 20 hours on my pc to date. I have spoken on the forums with numerous people, none of who have had major issues with AC for the PC. Yet again we see an example of mohills turning into mountains via the internet.
Come on Shocky....dry? I agree its not vegimite on a cracker, but there hasn't really ever been anything like this game ever made.

Just finished the pc version the other day with no problems at all but that was directx 9.
It was a really well done game in some aspects. The first time you get to scramble up things and dive off them, fantastic exactly what I've wanted in a game for ages. But then they went and dropped the ball on the actual assassination part. The take your camera away from you so often and force you into specific situations. Just started to feel silly, wanted to have fun setting up my kill and getting it just right but then instead I get forced into a full out brawl every time with little to no choices. Which is the last thing I wanted, I wanted to be stealthy and sneaky and that was never an option really.
So big issues to me was the camera being controlled all the time, to much scripting and the main characters voice. All he did was show off how good everyone else was. But enjoyable none the less, iv played worse game and far far worse ports

I actually agree with him. It's core gameplay is boring, the missions are repetetive and the whole "free running" thing was just a gimmick since there was no real challenge in it.

I believe the crashes are due to the game trying to contact a Ubisoft server all the damn time. Removal of DX10.1 support is puzzling though.
I finished the game in DX10 as the graphics whore in me noticed that shadows around creases on characters (clothes, facial details, etc.) are blocky in DX9. I ran into around 4 or 5 crashes that happened when I tried to Alt-Tab out to play the game in windowed mode while still in the main menu.
Everything is perfectly fine otherwise. Great performance too.
As for the game itself, it can get a little tedious towards the end. I love the combat, visuals and story though.

i keep hearing crashes about this game, but i have yet to experience one. runs smooth as butter for me 60 frames in dx10, 1680x1024, vsync, the works, no issues.
are people just trying to run it on a dated system or what ? i wouldn't imagine people would try, since its a port of a xbox360/ps3 game.

I'm surprised they included any form of Direct X10.1 support. Did the game actually support tessellation or indexable cube map arrays? Too bad the HD 3800 series are the only cards that supports this.

Meh. I've had a blast with the game. Sure, the widescreen bars are annoying, and it crashes from time to time, but it's still a truly unique gaming experience unlike anything I've every played on the PC. I'll probably have beaten it by the time the patch drops, but I'd still say the game is worth every penny.

I have Assassins Creed for PC and it looks great, and I have yet to have it crash. I will say that I don't think I will ever finish it. I am getting a bit bored with the gameplay, though I was having an absolute blast......... up until the point the redundancy started to make it seem more like work than play.
Still I feel it's a great game, and generally happy with my purchase.

Yeah, but it'd be nice if things added weren't suddenly removed just because it was harder for them. I expect them to add this support back in or I will be all sorts of grumpy. Why do we have to accept this as an answer?

Forgot to mention this early, but here's the link to the article at R3D that analyzes the improvement from DX10.1.
It's too bad that they nuked a working part of the game. Maybe nV paid more than ATI did and got the code cut (since ATI cards are the only ones that support DX10.1 ATM).

@TheOtis: nvidia does support dx10 but only on newer cards it more than just a software update the GPU chip needs to have the DX 10 capabilities and you can only run DX10 on Vista not XP.

@TheOtis: My biggest complaint about DX10.1 is it came out almost immediately after 10 and isn't supported on those shiny dx10 cards all us pc gamers already bought.
I'm used to my technology going out of date but not THAT fast.

I wanna know what are the issues people are having...? I bought this game day one and have been running it in DX10 no problems "AT" all?? I am running a laptop with a dualcore 2.4 4Gb ram useing 2Gb Intel ready boost, Nvidia 8800 with 1Gb dedicated memory running on my 1080p @ 1080p on my HD-LCD via HDMI. I am not installing this patch. Forget loosing the DX10. Everything just blows away the PS3 and 360 versions in both visually and gameplay.

I wonder why Nvidia hasn't gone 10.1 yet? It's nice seeing ATI support it and all, but Nvidia has a HUGE section of the market for mid-rage/high end graphics cards, so why haven't they used it?
To all you nay-sayers of DX 10-
Do you really think when the first version of DX9 came out, the games were able to look as good as they do now? (Scaled to the hardware then to now, obviously). It takes time. Just like developing for the 360 did and the PS3 did/does. Things take time.
Yes, I'm a graphics whore, for all of you kids that say their isn't a difference between Bioshock in DX 9 and DX 10, you're sadly, sadly mistaken.
I'm sure theirs quite a difference between the two for AC as well.
For no, I have to strongly dissagree, DX 10 isn't "teh PHAIL"

Remember they are cutting 10.1 support, which isn't going to cut DX10 support. .1 was an incremental update that only improved the way certain actions were done, it didn't add anything new. You're DX10 card will still display DX10 stuff! Also, nVidia has supported DX10 since the 8800GTX which was launched in November of '06.
The biggest thing against DX10 is that it is only available to Vista machines. DirectX and the OS are separate from each other and Microsoft artificially tied the two products together. They used DX10 to help push Vista, and it has failed in those respects.

hhhmmm...i have seen no crashing on my computer while playing this game. And if anything it should crash on my computer for I do not have a dual core processor. My spec:
AMD 4000+ 2.2 ghz cpu
Geforce 8600 512 mb
320gb hdd
400 watt power supply
3 gb ram
Windows Vista
dvd drive (not sure on specs for it)
Now why have I not come across a crash in my computer yet. Played for bout 45 mins yesterday. Oh yea and im running it using directx 10. Also someone explain the fact that on the box it says I need a dual core 2.6 ghz processor. Im running it without any lag at all. I'm lost.
