Last release (San Andreas) they called me at like 9pm the night before the street date for the party thing, and I went, got free food and drink and got myself a copy of the game. As a warning to anyone considering doing this: keep an eye on this list up until Monday. BB announced a list of stores that would be doing Rock Band midnight releases last year and at some point within the week or two between the announcement and the release, they cut around half of the stores (one of them being the store I work for).

I went to one midnight launch (Halo 2) and regretting it ever since. Not only because Halo 2 wasn't nearly as good as the first, but the hassle wasn't worth it. I'll stroll into Gamestop Tuesday afternoon when there's no line, pick up something to eat, and play all day.

I'm all over both of them because I need to take the day off on Tuesday due to my CONVENIENT scheduling of our 1 year fixes to be done on our new house. It was hilarious because they came by to do the walk through like 3 and a half weeks ago and they asked me if I had a date in mind of when I wanted them to come and actually peform the work and immediately I just spat out "April 29th. Definitely."

I will, and this is the first pre-order midnight launch I have ever felt compelled to do.

And it works perfectly for me- I work afternoons, so I will get off work at 11:30, grab GTAIV, head back to the house downtown, and not have to work the following day until 3pm.

Calling the few gaming pals I know to see if a "party" can be made out of it, like my old gal did with the Oscars. SHould be fun, looking forward to it.

For what its worth, the choices on which stores to open at midnight probably is decided by more than just sales potential. I don't think Best Buy is trying to "screw" certain locales, but there may be laws or rules that prevent them from easily opening after midnight. Even if they've opened at midnight before doesn't mean this wasn't a factor. While exceptions might ocassionally be possible, the hassle and expense may have been judged to be not worth it on this occassion. Also, the laws may have changed since they last did this. I know a lot of cities have zoning restrictions on retail stores and opening late often requires a special permit. Don't be so quick to blame Best Buy for any gaps in the store openings. There could easily be a lot of factors at play.
