Ubisoft Sees 36 Percent Sales Jump In FY 08
Posted by Kotaku US Edition at 2:40 AM on April 25, 2008
Ubisoft sales jumped nearly 37 percent during their latest fiscal year, which ended last month, rocketing from $US 1.07 billion to $US 1.46 billion over the year, the company announced during their annual call today.
The jump was mostly due to Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six Vegas 2 and Assassin's Creed doing better than expected, they said. Vegas 2 sold close to 2 million, while 6 million copies of Assassin's Creed were sold. Ubi said they were also happy with their Games for Everyone brand, which includes titles like My Word Coach and My French Coach and brought in $US 361 million.
"Fiscal year '09 will be another great year thanks to a stronger-than-anticipated market dynamic... thanks to a great lineup, and we'll be seeing new creations as well as our key franchises and [another] aggressive push in the casual side," said Yves Guillemot CEO of Ubisoft. "We will continue to build long-term growth potential by opening two new studios in Chengdu, China and in Singapore, and acquiring one in Punei, India. This will give us additional production capacity and we will need that for the years to come, because we want to grow fast and we will need more people in our studio."
Ubisoft's strong year helped the company increase their market share from 6.7 to 7.2 percent, they said, and they believe they can grow another 15 percent in the coming fiscal year through their existing franchises, in particular their casual line of games.
"Core gamers buying more games than they used to, while more mass-market products are reaching a new audience — particularly the families playing more and more [of] the games we create, " Guillemot said.

Am I the only one still boycotting Ubi for the Ziff bullshit? You're all so weak.
I guess it has helped that Ubi has released nothing but shit in the past 6 months.

Did anyone else notice those new studios aquired are nowhere near the U.S? That's outsourcing for you.
Also, did anyone else notice the bugs in A:C and R6V2? That's Ubisoft for you...

They make nothing that interests me, so it annoys me that they're only doing better and better.
@System_Zero:
You didn't know?
Um...this is kinda awkward.
No More Heroes was a massive flop.
Like, no one bought a copy at the launch event so out of pity a journalist did so that Suda had something to sign.

im ashamed to admit im an ex-Ubisoft-whore.
anything with a Tom Clancy's name on it was a guaranteed buy.
thankfully, R6: Lockdown opened my eyes to what a huge mistake that can be, and so no R6V2 for me.
im just hoping they don't go all EA on our asses and almost ruin all their staple series. and i REALLY hope they dont ruin EndWar.

So does this take into account returns to stores? Cause I so returned Assassins Creed (I like the gameplay, man it was fun but um... Yea, I'm a sick bastard and I wanted to stab stab stab everyone!)

Now all they need to do is take that money and actually make some decent games.

That piece of shit Vegas 2 sold over 2 mil? Ugh I hate myself for buying it. What a horrible buggy mess of a game, and a rip off to boot.

I'm sad that I contributed to the sales, Vegas 2 was full of so many bugs...

sure, im fine with more assassin's creed, just MAKE THE STORY LESS REPETITIVE NEXT TIME! I was playing the first game while sleeping toward the end of it because it was so frickin repetitive.
How the hell did RSV2 sell that many btw. its like RSV1 with a new main menu background.

@Kyle81:
I agree with you there. Wish I rented Rainbow Six Vegas 2 instead, would have been money well saved, since I'm back playing COD4 anyway.

@karasu is my homeboy: That was only the Japanese launch; thus you're conveniently leaving out the rest of the story. No More Heroes has since sold respectfully.

Ubi really needs to get some better QA people, V2 was a great game without all the problems...
The PC version is fun to play with my roomate on LAN, but I had to disable SLI because it was having horrible texture artifacting. How come they didnt catch this stuff when the PC version came out 1 month later then the consoles?

It has nothing to do with the quality of the QA people.
But everything to do with releasing the game in time to please the shareholders.
Developpers are well aware of the quality of the game that gets shipped to microsoft for printing. Don't be naive.

@DugDawg: I was disappointed with GRAW2 in a similar manner, but to me that game greatly improved many areas of the original.... I LOVED R6Vegas1, and so I was weak and bought 2..... what a mistake.
Also Somehow they made the online play less fun.... I think most of the new maps are horrible. Only good is that they made the graphics decent looking this time around when playing multiplayer instead of the blurry mess it was in the original.

Great news for Ubi, now take the damn patch for RSV2 that they put out a day or two ago and everything will be peachy king from my point of view on Ubi

Seems like those #'s would be actually FY 07, but I'm no financial whiz myself... just commenting on this after reading Leigh (who's posts up until today I've loved) post about Q1 '08's 360 sales figures post.
I've just gotten really skeptical of said blogger's number crunching abilities since the "Xbox 360 sold 19 million untis in three months" post that actually post-dates this one....
If that's the case, I'm a monkey's uncle (and as of my knowledge have fathered no children...

@DugDawg:
Uhh, hundreds of thousands of copies isn't a flop. Especially for a game destined to be a niche title.
