Ubisoft: Years Of Assassin's Creed To Come
Posted by Kotaku US Edition at 3:20 AM on April 25, 2008
Assassin's Creed as a brand will be around for "years to come," Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot said during today's conference call.
Assassin's Creed has sold 6 million units since launch, Guillemot said, as he summarised a corporate strategy that relies on enduring in-house brands balanced against the introduction of new franchises.
No mention of February 2008's Assassin's Creed: Altaïr's Chronicles for DS was made during the call, but Ubisoft's enthusiasm for the original game's "better-than-expected" performance seemed to indicate an interest in more adventures for Altaïr in the future.

@Archaotic: Until we know what they'll do with the sequels, I'd hardly say that's an accurate conclusion.
The biggest drawback was lack of replayability and/or variety, and if that gets addressed in sequels, I think they'd have an even bigger success.
karasu is my homeboy: I agree that the existing hiding process is "silly" and could definitely be improved by more accurate enemy A.I., as well as getting your abilities back quicker/earlier in the game.
Your other points didn't bother me as much - but I think having more control in combat would be a plus.
@doesntlikedede, symphony_of_the_night: Yes, that was very funny. An attractive woman produced a game so it must sell well but has to be terrible...
...even though I was sold on getting this title years ago when I heard about its premise - and loved playing it from start to finish.

I thought it was "okay" at best. The voice acting was "meh", and it was really monotonous in many parts. Try mixing things up a bit for once eh Ubisoft? Also, how about making it to where it doesn't take 82 seconds to exit out of the game on the PC.

So they're going to be exploiting the IP on an annual basis? That's fucking awesome. I want more dirivitive crap, rather than fresh new innovation. Fuck creativity, give me more sequels, dammit!

@NPlace:
I agree with you, really. I thought the game was great in the realm of the story elements, however, as far as the gameplay goes, I felt very disappointed as time went on. Eventually, I just felt myself grinding my teeth to get to the end. In theory, the concept was exceptionally fun, I mean, who doesn't want to be an assassin? But, the game just left me wanting more for all of the wrong reasons. It wasn't like finishing a great meal and wanting dessert, it was like playing a game of mini-golf, the first half of it was fun, then you just want to get it the hell over with so you can go home and do something different.

This really did seem like a love it or hate it kind of game. Personally I loved it. I didn't find it nearly as repetitive as many people seem to think it is (certainly no more repetitive than a lot of other games) and found the story and, perhaps most importantly, the game world to be very engaging.
I'm glad they are going to keep the series going. Those who didn't like it the first time around don't have to play it. Or they can try the sequel and see if the things they didn't like are different. I will be playing them though.

Personally I loved AC, and I don't get all the hate for it. In fact the only criticism I would have for it is the lack of an ending. I'd have much preferred something a bit more conclusive, like the ending to Mass Effect, which leaves room open for a sequel but still ties everything up in a satisfactory way.

I'm still playing it. I found that if you just do one assassination between putting it away for a while, it stays fresh. I did one then played Mass Effect, then I did another then played CoD4, just finished another and now it's GTA time again.
I don't think we'll be seeing more of Altair. I think it'll be that kid in the machine again taking us to another , more recent ancestor's life.

@NPlace:
I don't hate on it for any reason other than it was no fun. Jade and the gang hyped it to hell about how it was a truly next gen game and going to be amazing in it's control scheme, tasks, graphics, etc.
My problems with Assassin's Creed:
1.Yeah, the graphics were great. But why do I have to awkwardly stand in a weird blurry dimension for 2-3 minutes? Work on the load times.
2.Cutscenes.
3.Fix the sillyness. The whole hiding in 3 objects, lowering your head to enter stealth mode, only being able to eaves drop by sitting on a bench (why can't I just stand...it's closer, really.) A lot of sillyness.
4.I have never felt more disconnected from a character on screen. He did everything while all I need do was aim.
5.There's more, on a large and small scale. Like, I hate when games give me everything and then take it all away, making me work for it again. "Here's all the kickass stuff your character can do. Now we're taking them all away so you have to play for 4 hours to get these kick ass moves back." No, thanks.
I tried to love. I rented it three times, thinking I was just playing it wrong or not being fair. It just wasn't a good game, me thinks.

It held my attention enough to finish the game, despite the flaws. And I liked the ending a lot and am intrigued by the dramatic possibilities of a sequel. I DO hope they figure out a way to make the gameplay more varied.
I even kinda liked looking for flags but there was no way to locate them ala Crackdown and no real incentive to get them other than "cheevos".

Though the game had repetitive mechanics, I found the game really interesting in terms of story, gameplay, enviroments, ect. I had fun playing it, though I was hoping for more Prince of Persia puzzle gameplay. I'm looking forward to the sequel. (Imperial China?)
I just want to know, why people think it's not fun. Is it the combat? The story? I don't think the repetitiveness of the game is a negative quality, that urks some players.

I feel as if Assassin's Creed is one of those games that it's cool to hate on. But I loved the first one, even if it dad have its problems. Things for the sequel:
1. Keep going with the story, don't change it because people can't understand it.
2. Have actual MGS-style cutscenes instead of watching story sequences from an unmoving third-person perspective. You've got great characters, a great story, let us see them up close.
3. Yes, more variety, less tedious traveling.

Tips for Assassin's Creed 2:
(1) Play Odin Sphere and FFXII. See those pausable, skippable cutscenes? Yeah, do that.
(2) Let us go back and play through any Assassination without having to ride all the way down from the mountain.
(3) Give us a new game + where we keep all our cool moves/gear!
Otherwise, do what you did in the Original Assassin's Creed, only a little better. Assassin's Creed is an awesome game.

I loved the game, but disliked going back in and playing again due to the fact that the last save put you right before the final assassination, of course dropping you at the beginning of a very long unskippable cut scene.
I would have gone back to just enjoy running around and killing random folks, but I couldn't stand listening to that windbag again and again and again. So, I traded it in for GTA4.
I'll buy the sequel, Ubi, but work on the "endgame." We need something to do once the story is complete.

Gabe from Penny Arcade had it pegged - this was a game you had to take your time with. Treating it as a tasked to be finished would make it feel redundant.

loose the regorously enforced speed limits for horses trotting round at 3 mph IS NOT FUN!!
bring back cutscenes. i love cutscenes they have the ability to give you a fun spectical and pass on important info about the plot. endless dialogue with nothing to do but walk around in a circle is annoying.
lastly. variety is the spice of life, ubisoft. if you could just strech your game creating imaginations to more than just three kinds of side missions id be impressed. it doesnt need to be GTA it just needs more than the same mediocre tasks over and over again.
also more assassinations........ and some cake

The free-running open ended-ness of it was pretty cool, but it just got so monotonous. Why am I going to do all six informer challenges when the assassination is going to be the same no matter what? It lacked a level of interactivity that you sort of expect from an open ended game. In GTA and Hitman the game always follows a defined script, but how you accomplish the missions is largely up to you. That's what the game was missing... and skippable cutscenes I mean what the fuck?
@PissedPS3Fan:
To be fair, the first one was hardly a one off. They've planned to exploit it for years to come so it's not necessarily derivative.

With a few minor changes, the sequels will be some of the best games ever.
They really need to add more variety to the side missions and make each assassination truly unique. AC really needed more assassination options, similar to one of the recent Hitman games, where you can approach the target from a variety of angles and use weapons, traps, poison, and other strategies to take them out, rather than just taking on the target and his 10 body guards at once, and killing everyone in a long swordfight.

Forget the whole future/past nonsense, and since you make an engine which really places me "in the middle ages" then PLACE me in the middle ages.

If your game involves a lot of walking slowly, picking pockets or SITTING ON A PARK BENCH EAVES-DROPPING ON CONVERSATIONS you might want to play test your game and make sure it's actually fun.
My biggest problem is constantly being chased while riding from city to city. You should be able to travel at a trot without bringing every swordsman in the Holy Land down on top of you.
