Super Mario Kart Is All I Need (With Expensive Simulator)
Posted by Mark Wilson at 4:40 AM on April 30, 2008
WARNING: DO NOT STEP BEYOND THE WAIST HIGH FENCE WHILE MARIO KART IS IN MOTION.
Luke can have his Mario Kart Wii and his fancy wireless motion controls from the future. I'll enjoy the classic, SNES version and a humble motion simulator by Force Dynamics. Constructed from various flavours of steel, this simulator features 500lbs of peak thrust, five channels of surround sound and one wicked disclaimer:
The [unit] can move suddenly, and severely injure someone who is within the working envelope. A waist high fence located at least 4 feet away from the machine is strongly suggested.OK, technically the disclaimer is for a more premium unit. But I had a need to post that bit about the "waist high fence." For your safety.

If the arcade units for Mario Kart and F-Zero had these kinds of simulators they would have probably done a lot better.

thats pretty neat!- but "Were not going to tell you how we did it" What assholes...
our world would be a much cooler, funner, and nonetheless smarter place- if we were all taught these nifty tricks. Greedy bastards....

everyone is gushing over this thing? did no one else notice the half second delay between when something happened on screen to when the kart actually reacted to it?

The jumps, the water, the rocks, the baddies! The way it reacts to the environments is amazing. Although, megaStryke is right, they go through all of that trouble to have it semi-simulated? Where the hell are the steering wheel and the pedals man!

@RSTStop780:
Thats what I thought too at first, and then I realized I think he's trying to drive crappy and hit as much stuff as possible, like the moles, to show how the kart reacts to different surfaces and situations.
Or maybe I'm just being too optimistic.

They go through all that trouble to build that setup... then you control the thing via what appears to be a DualShock. This would be perfect if they had added a wheel and some pedals.

Pretty sweet, I would imagine that he isn't driving "bad" per se, but to show the minuscule depression and elevation of the machine if it were to hit non-pavement; much like the rumble.

I'm sure he's probably playing on a PC with a SNES emulator. That would also explain how he got the motion simulator to interface with the game. As for the controller: SIXAXIS controllers work really well for PC, so that's probably what it is.
And I WANT ONE FOR GT5!! Sony, make it happen. And make it cost like only $100.

xyierz
Posted 1:43 PM 30/4/08
I'm guessing this is just a recorded video with the force feedback pre-scripted and he's just pretending to play. The only other options would be linking the feedback to the controller input, which obviously wasn't done, image recognition, or spending some serious quality time with an emulator and a debugger. The latter two options involve such massive amounts of effort that it's unlikely someone would go through with it just for a single demonstration on Youtube (granting that this is good press for his company).

Posted 8:22 PM 30/4/08
@xyierz:
Force Dynamics has been in business for a long time, and probably has Mario Kart worked out by now. Their simulators are compatible with all manner of racing games and flight sims, so this was probably a fully functioning hookup.
Also considering the fully spec'd unit costs upwards of 27k, I think this was the real deal.
