50 Cent II Impressions
Posted by Flynn De Marco at 11:00 PM on April 28, 2008
Wow, I'm not sure where to begin with this one. I'm not often overly critical of games, especially ones that haven't released yet, but I have to say here and now that I was very disappointed in the Fifty Cent game. I'm not sure what I was expecting, but it certainly wasn't what I was presented with.
The plot of the game involves 50 Cent and his G-Unit crew who are performing a concert in a "war torn country." Things start getting bad and Fifty and his pals must use an arsenal of weapons to help stop the terrorists involved. Something about watching this game being played really left me with a feeling that everything was kind of tacked on. Like they started out to make a terrorist themed arcade shooter and when it don't work out, added in 50 and friends to help sell some units.
The game makes use of an over the shoulder style of shooting and employs the good old "run and gun" and "duck and cover" mechanics to much use. The whole games point system is based on killing as many people as you can and watching your score go up. Each character has their own weapon of choice that can be added to with twenty various weapons that can be found lying about or taken off of downed enemies. There is also hand to hand combat involved with contextual button kill moves that were really rather disturbing in their stark realism.
The whole game smacked of a certain stereotypical representation of the rap community that seemed a bit forced. I mean you pick up "bling" which you can then sell to buy more weapons and includes a mechanic called "Gangsta Firing Time." Haven't we moved past this sort of thing? The whole thing left me with a sort of empty feeling of a game with no real substance.
That said, the graphics were nice and those of you out there who are 50 Cent fans will be pleased to hear that the soundtrack will include exclusive tracks by Fifty and crew from their upcoming album. The game will support co-op play and online drop-in co-op as well as leaderboards. Hopefully they will be able to do something to improve this title before it launches on the 360 and PS3 this fall.

Let me try and understand this preview,
50 and pals are busy rapping in some Middle Eastern country when all of a sudden he's attacked by terrorists.
50 gets angry and decides to go on a quest to defeat the terrorists who stopped his concert.
Using an arsenal of ripped off game mechanics from much better games such as: "Gangsta Time" in which he makes his best Max Payne 1 squished up face and shoots in slow motion and "run and gun" tactics, 50 Cent must go and kill who's behind this evil plan to blow up his concerts.Kanye West.
Did it control any good though?

After getting shot by a handgun it was only natural that 50 would want to try an assault rifle round.

Perhaps, the developer had a large amount of middle eastern assets already made for a game (perhaps a sequel to a PS2 game) when said game might have been cancelled. Then your publisher decides to do another 50% game and lo your assets are no longer wasted and you're making a joke game.
I could be making it all up though ;)

I really liked 50 Cent:Bulletproof for two reasons.
1) It was only $5 new.

@SorenKier: Well there was a time when rappers didn't take themselves seriously at all. (remember the Run DMC song about finding Santa's wallet and trying to give it back to him? or the Skee-lo song "I Wish" that was about wishing he was taller and better at basket ball?). But now that the image of the super tough white-t-shirt-gold-chain-wearing rapper has been heavily commercialized, that whole super serious "damn son look at how hood I look" image is all that is around anymore. At least in the mainstream anyways.

I'm not surprised that it is terrible. Why would a game that focuses on a musician be any good at all? The Kiss game sucked ass, the first 50 Cent game sucked ass so why should this be any different? Does he mumble through all the dialogue like how he mumbles in his songs? He's a terrible rapper lyrically.

@frostcircus: lol. Frankly, I agree. No mention of "Blood on the Sand" *shudder* is complete without pointing out that Fiddy accepts a JEWEL ENCRUSTED SKULL AS PAYMENT FOR A PERFORMANCE.
By the way, who is he performing for in this unnamed middle-eastern country? Either I'm underestimating G-Unit's popularity in that part of the world, or he is demanding payment (again, in the form of a bejeweled skull) for performing for American troops in the region.
Until now, I had no that it was possible for me to be this horrified AND this amused at the same time.

ENUNCIATE, FOOL!
Listen to hip-hop people... Move pass this rap crap that 50 cent calls music. Curtis sold more internationally cuz people didn't understand the lyrics and picked out the words "fuck" and "gangsta" and thought it was a hit and the beats were nice... That's about it. Fo sho.

the story of this game if i understand correctly is that 50 cent doesn't get 10 million for the concert he did in the middle east and gets a crystal skull in payment then everyone trys to get the skull back? but my question is if his concert had made the money it was supposed to to begin with then the promoter would have been able to pay him.But since he sucked the middle east must suffer?

Its quite sad the Gen-y boomers missed the golden boat of Hip-Hop and is left with this garbage.
Only in America can you make 50 million annually with zero substance.
However, I have to note that Fifty was major Johnny Blaze before he got shot and famous. His mixtapes were probably the best that I have ever heard and one of the best lyricist. He even beefed with class before "In da Club".
His other ventures?, Vitamin water is good and all; but I really hope he would leave the gaming genre alone. It doesn't help that his game is used as a tool for the media.
