Behind The Scenes Of The Fake Zelda Movie
Posted by Mark Wilson at 6:40 AM on April 5, 2008
IGN's Zelda movie prank by Rainfall Films probably broke a lot of fanboy hearts April 1st morning, but that doesn't mean a lot of love for the series wasn't put into the trailer. Requiring 3 months of work for a crew that peaked at 20 people, the first makeup tests actually started all the way back on July 20th of 2007. (Which means that when accounting for casting, costume design and general organisation, its a date nowhere near the actual project's start.) Here's the making of video, which we promise doesn't end as badly as Adam's Kaketakumentary.

Isn't this really an april fools on themselves? They spent tons of money and time and effort to do something for one day, for free, that most people have already forgotten about, When they could've spent a little bit more money, gotten a quick okay by Nintendo (or maybe not) and had it offered as an exclusive half hour- whole hour special film for IGN Insiders. It would've sparked up tons of insider subscriptions, which would've gotten them a ton of money, and possibly have opened up an avenue to actual make small, low budget game to film adaptations online....
Aprils Fools IGN...your retarded.

All I have to say is that I am glad it is a fake because a Zelda movie would be lame.
Mario Bros. the Movie anyone? Anyone? EPIC FAIL.

Its pretty cool what some people can do on a tight budget, and they you have major flops from Hollywood that flush the monies straight down the loo.

The worst part is that this prank was a better game to film adaptation than anything Uwe Boll has pushed out of his sphincter onto the the silver screens of the world.

In the original trailer it says "Coming April 1st 2009". Could they make a mini half hour epic just in time for next April Fool's day? They've certainly put in the groundwork!

fair do's to them, they did an awesome job!
Im kinda glad they didn't make a zelda movie, Im sure it would have been crap, but Im almost sad that they did such a bang up job on something as small as an april fools prank.
Major kudos to them!

I still can't believe they went through so much for an April Fool's joke. One that will be forgotten soon, except by Zelda fanboys, and in some blurb in a gaming magazine years later.

Ganon's makeup annoyed me. It was a nice job, but I think the green was too intense, and his hair colour was too bright making it look more like a bad Halloween costume xD

Honestly? They just added themselves into Zelda history. The fact is, this wont be forgotten, it was actually pretty dang good quality for being a non-studio, and hell, it's better then a lot of the gaming movie adaptations out there, and it's just a trailer!

I'm sorry, but the fact that they wasted money and effort on something that they could've fully made and actually recieved money for, is not a valid point? please.

@WolfofWar: Forgetting two characters in a 6 character word is a third of the word.
Your point has been disagreed with not because you made a grammar error (forgetting letters is a lie I won't buy), but because you called something on the internet retarded without any valid points other than it was stupid in your opinion. (Note the correct usage of the word your). Nintendo would never just OK their rights to something like this, even more so if IGN would be making money on it. And to say that people would just forget this is incorrect either. We are not in the age of radio, we are in the age of the internet. This will exist for as long as the internet does, with special mention under topics of Zelda and April Fools day jokes.
So, instead of posting something that is completely negative with no real factual basis, on a blog topic you 'barely care about' and then following up on the blog topic you don't care about, why don't you just let it go; They had fun making it, we had fun watching it. End of Story.

I actually think that movie would have been pretty cool. It would probably end up feeling like a B movie version of The Lord of the Rings but that's what would give it it's charm.

@WolfofWar:
It's also the fact that you obviously know nothing about the production group who made it. The budget was insanely low and it got the group insanely noticed due to it. You sir, are "retarded".
(If you care so little about this site, why would you take the time to type up another rebuttal?)

zomg I forgot two letters because I rushed a comment in less then a minute on a blog topic I barely care about. That totally invalidates my point. Yes, go crucify me.

@WolfofWar: Once again, had they even tried to make money on it, they would be sued. It's Nintendo property, and Nintendo would not give it's OK to be used for the profit of another company. If you have a way they could have made money on this that would not be against the law, then your point is very valid. Unfortunately, unless Nintendo asked them to make a movie on their behalf, it would never be allowed.

Lord of the Rings must have spoiled me because the Zelda video just looked like some average cosplayers in a cheap B, or lower, movie trailer that shows up on YouTube every other day for various shows. Hearing it took so long to create makes me feel a little sorry for them, to be honest. I'm not saying this was a bad trailer or anything. I got a laugh out of it and enjoyed it just from pure nostolgia stand point, but step away from the rose coloured Zelda glasses and you'll see this was a very, very mediocre "movie trailer".

@WolfofWar:
So basically, because you wouldn't spend the money in this manner, it means that no one can -- otherwise they're retarded? Yeah, okay. [/sarcasm] The fact is, however much time and money this endeavor cost was obviously worth it to the team -- because they had over half a year to abandon it and tell IGN "forget about it" but they didn't. That says something for how the expenditure was worth it to them. Then there's the point everyone else is making about how this movie isn't going to be forgotten any time soon (I know I'll be watching it still in years to come!). Not to mention the publicity this video got for their "studio" (if one wants to call it that). These are amateur actors and filmmakers, so getting out one of their works in this manner on a website as world-famous as IGN is a stroke of genius. It's the best advertising they could have possibly hoped for.
One thing's for certain -- whoever did the CGI for this trailer is definitely getting hired at a major Hollywood studio soon. The Zelda boss-monsters have never looked so good!!

I think there must be something wrong with my eyes, cause I never once got the impression that Ganondorf's complexion was green. I mean he always looked brown/black to me and the fact that he hails from the desert made it more believable. Where are these people seeing green? I felt like they were dressing up the Hulk for a moment there.

Some people are taking this way too seriously. It's an april fools joke, a rather elaborate one at that. It wasn't designed to make money, it wasn't designed to put films like Lord of the Rings to shame.
It was created as a lighthearted joke to the gaming community.
Personally I think it's great. They worked hard and produced something that makes Zelda fans and casual gamers smile.

Umm....I don't know what was going through the make-up crew's minds at that time. But that does not look like Ganondorf. Ganondorf doesn't have a thick lion's mane or sideburns long enough to braid into thick ropes.

There was a movie called "legend" which is similar to the video game series of zelda. trust me everything in movie is what its in the game. sword, shield, season change, word legend, villain, goblin, troll, pesky fairy, elf, link clothes, and magic. great movie from the time.
