Burnout Paradise To Introduce Motorcycles, Night, General Bad Assness
Posted by Mark Wilson at 3:20 AM on April 24, 2008
Criterion has just announced a major addition to Burnout Paradise. Planned for their "Davis" update this August, the download will include motorcycles (a first for Burnout) along with "their own game modes, challenges and even some new locations tailored to fit their unique performance and handing characteristics." From that statement we're assuming that cars and bikes will not race side-by-side, but you can take it as you will.
In addition, the Davis update will bring night time driving to the game—adding a bit of realism to freely racing around public streets without getting constantly arrested and frisked. Here's the full Criterion announcement:
Criterion Games announces motorbikes in Burnout Paradise!
This is the biggest news in Burnout history!
For the first time, we'll let you loose in a Burnout game on motorbikes!Criterion Games announces motorbikes in Burnout Paradise! [Criterion] Thanks tipsters! And because we're dedicated to bringing you game-changing new Burnout Paradise content all year, bikes will feature their own game modes, challenges and even some new locations tailored to fit their unique performance and handing characteristics.
The other big news relating to bikes is that we've introduced night-time to Burnout Paradise for the first time.
We wanted to clear the traffic out a little to give you the chance to learn how to ride in safety, and we've always wanted to cruise the streets of Paradise City with incredible night-time visuals.
We expect to ship bikes as part of our Davis software update, due for release sometime in August.
As always, we're bringing you the hot news from Criterion Games as it happens. Hit the site soon for more news and the first high-definition bike footage.

It's Bette Davis, not Sammy. With this and the new island they are adding, this will be a completely new game come fall. Pretty psyched for it all.

I don't get why they would want planes. I suppose midair "burnout" would be interested to say the least. But seems to deviate a little too far away from pure burnout.

@Atheist Jew: The game is already rated. They can't add crashes with people in it to the game at this point.
Realism? Whats realistic about burnout? Really nothing. The cars have boosters on them, they do crazy stunts and perform crazy drive aways after accidents.... you crash others for fun. There are no pedestrians.
Burnout isn't about realism.

This was a really fun rental when it first dropped, and with all that they've added since and all that they plan to add, I'm now strongly considering picking it up, even if I do have to suffer through DJ Atomica.

Oh. My. God.
This has the potential to allow super fast zippy motorcycle stunts, and even crazier crashes.
Now just don't make it suck, like PGR4! (I'm kidding, it was ok; not allowing cars and bikes to race may be a quick fix)

This raises some really interesting questions, like how the hell are they going to deal with crashes? Introducing people to the burnout franchise brings with it a host of other issues to consider, like implementing ragdoll physics, and more importantly, maintaining their E10+ rating from the ESRB.
How do they expect not to be immediately lambasted by the ESRB when a player on a motorcycle slams head on into an on-comming car at 90mph and the driver's body flies 100 feet, only to land in a broken heap? And if they don't implement ragdoll physics, how can they seriously maintain their PR statements about realism?
@Kyle81: Leads me to believe they simply don't care. So much for realism.

Burnout, at least for me, is about crashes. Wrecking your ride and watching metal crumple and parts fly.
I've got a feeling that the motorcycles won't quite be like the cars and trucks. I'm thinking it'll just be races, beating the clock, etc...
...but that's not why I bought Burnout. If they're adding bikes, I hope I'll be able to run it right into a wall and see the wreck in all its slo-mo glory.

@Kyle81:
Yeah, but first-person is even worse in my opinion when it comes to racing games. I have a terrible time gauging my surroundings in it.
Almost all the racing games I've played in the last years have done the 3rd person well: Motorstorm, NFS, Excite Truck... It just baffles me why Criterion deviated from the norm.

It's fun to drive around and crash, but without bodies and gore, it only makes you think it's an amusement park ride rather than a driver's education film. I think gore would make people think twice about a street race in real life.
Crash mode is dearly missed, showtime mode is trash.

Well, hopefully Burnout Paradise will be around $40 by August. I rented it, and I was pissed because I was the only one actually using the Playstation Eye, and once I return it, stuck on the belief that Burnout Paradise is painfully overrated, here they come with a bunch of life-changing updates. Awesome job, Criterion, you filthy bastards.
P.S. Me being the only one using the Eye wasn't the only reason I didn't like it. There was also the "no restart" thing, the soundtrack (no rap? Oh wait! Downloadable custom soundtrack update!) and no split-screen multiplayer.

Wait. Wait. There's actually someone ON the motorcycle? That's all I wanted from the series before! My worst wrecks are nothing without seeing where the poor shmucks driving are headed after careening into a wall at 250mph. I want to know how much damage the player inside takes and add that to my bonus score. Even if, in order to maintain sane parameters, these things in the car are crash test dummies or robots.
