Call Of Duty 4 Sells 9 Million
Posted by Luke Plunkett at 5:30 PM on April 18, 2008
Bonus NPD news! Activision & Infinity Ward have taken this month's NPD software sales and done the math on Call of Duty 4's lifetime sales data. According to them, it's sold nine million copies since November. Nine million. For a game that didn't get the marketing of, say, Halo 3, and was only released in November, those are some staggering numbers. Staggering, but for such an extraordinary game, totally deserved. They're also reporting that the 360 map packs have already been downloaded one million times, so I get the feeling some corks will be popped and some backs slapped over at Infinity Ward come Friday afternoon.

@Archaotic: Future Combat, huh?
Doesn't that fall under Halo 3, Killzone, Haze and any other shooter that takes place in the, I don't know... future?
I think that's why Modern Warfare is so great. It takes place now. Were already inundated with shooters that take place in WWII, and the future.

Umm for those that said "yet they go back to WWII", I believe Infinity only developed COD 1 and 2, with "3" left in the find hands of Activison lackey Treyarch. I guess CoD 5 is back in the hands of Treayarch or however you spell it and it will be a WWII setting. Really for as much as people bitch about EA fuck Activison, there is no way CoD 5 will be as good as this and they know it, why can't they just keep shitting on the Tony Hawk and SpiderMan properties, I cried red tears of blood when they got Guitar Hero and I'm not suprised how shitty a slight bit of lag ruined it and then they went with the biggest sell out band of all time Aerosmith for the next game. That all being said CoD 1 was one of the best mp games ever made, tons of fun so to speak. Just look at the numbers Halo 3 is dead in the water compared to COD 4 online.

@Balance_In_Life (PSN):
Well, I'm not talking aliens when I say "Future Combat". I'm thinking more along the lines of "near future but with a twinge of sci-fi". Like Metal Gear or Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter. My reason for it is pretty simple, too...
I'm just so damn sick of seeing the same exact tired, generic weapons game after game after game...would it kill people to inject just a little bit of creativity into weapon design? I commend them for their loyalty to realism, but we've seen it all before, and that's what bugs me. It's nothing new, it's just the old standard polished to a golden sheen.
I honestly think that Infinity Ward has really done all they can do with the terrorist setting, lest they end up remaking the same game over and over again with a new name for the main bad guy a la the Tom Clancy series. In my opinion, there's nowhere else for IW to go but onward and upward.

@Archaotic: Not to get back into this here. But I mean what really is safe these days? In the P.C. era that we are in, a "terrorist" shooting game even as good as this one caught a ton of flak even though the man villain a Russians and not from the middle east. If you went with the "Us vs. Aliens" it wouldn't sell as well. Future Combat could work but in a different franchise, it isn't what COD5 should be set around.
The reason why COD4 sold like hot dogs at a beer festival is because it's so damn relevant. Every day you turn on the news you hear about whats going on with the war. COD4 managed to sell so well because it's a lot like whats going on in the world today.
Also I think I can honestly say that most gamers are tired of Nazis. The only real way is to do COD5 would be to stay on it's current (UNBROKEN) track.

@Darthearl: This is Halo 3 back in January at 8.1 mil. No clue exactly where it is now.
Pretty amazing for COD4, I must say. I would argue that it isn't substantially innovative, but it is one superbly crafted game and SP is a top-notch cinematic experience. Online isn't too shabby, either, in the vein of Counter-Strike.

It's funny, too. Activision did the same thing with Guitar Hero...and look at what happened. The original creators ended up putting out a vastly superior product in the form of Rock Band while Activision's whore-out team put out a by-the-books sequel easily packaged for mass-market consumption.
It's damn good business, but it's horrible for the customers. And people wonder why I generally avoid Activision products like the plague.

To everyone out there saying why is Treyarch getting COD well.. they have to. Activision is like EA and wants to make money. So it milks its best franchises like Guitar Hero and COD. Infinity Ward though develops quality. So After COD2 was made what do you think Infinity Ward started working on? That's right COD4. In some of the documents that the Ward team sent to each other COD4 was even labeled as COD3 (saw that in a Game Informer a while back). Well yeah it stupid but you can see how people will just buy COD5 blindly. Kinda wrong in a sense.. using Infinity Ward's rep to make that extra cash..

@Archaotic: I have to disagree with you. Infinty Ward created Cod, and then worked on Cod2 which could probably pass as an expansion pack. Nothing from them until Cod 4 which seems at least as multiplayer goes, as solid a game ever released on par with Quake 3 for me. If you don't count CoD 3, which I don't, this is thier "Halo 3" I'm just trying to figure out what old ground they are retreading. They make shooting at people games, that's their niche. I could do witout "monster closets" anymore in single player that's my complaint.

@Demaar: You do have to consider (or at least I do) that COD4 was a multi-plat release on 360, PS3 and PC. A lot of previous blockbusters like GTA, Halo, and GT were all exclusive in some way or another. Don't know where you get your numbers from, anyway...
Still really impressive to go 9mil in six months, but that puts a little perspective on it. You sell when you make your game available.

Such is the failing of adhering strictly to real-world events and settings. You limit yourself to a very, very strict set of guidelines, and when every single developer working in the genre is following the same guidelines, overlap becomes the norm, as it has nowadays.
I really don't know what the solution is, but the point I'm trying to make is that if Infinity Ward wanted to, or if Activision gave them carte blanche to do so, those guys would be able to make something fresh and new that'd knock all our socks off instead of just retreading old ground for the nth time.

@Archaotic: Well I do agree but who are we (meaning the allies) gonna fight? Mexico? France? Japan? The only place right now that is "safe" is the Middle East, Russia Terrorist or China. It's been that way for years. I seriously doubt, because of the people that game in China, there is going to be a game that they are the bad guy. Even in most Tom Clancy (GRAW esp) is the fighting done in the Middle East. I'm not trying to say anything here but game devs that are trying to do modern warfare or even future (like 20 years down the road) warfare have to be really careful where they tread. I don't mind Treyarch making COD games. IW wants to make quality games that take 2 years or more to make. In the meantime I'd rather have the option to buy a game than not, even if it's not made by IW. I will always take having the option to experience a new game or not having the option. I don't have to buy it if it gets bad reviews, but there's a possibility that it might be worthwhile as well. I'm optimistic, as well, that as Treyarch gets more experience under they belt the quality of their offerings will go up.

I actually bought 2 copies of this game, one for 360 and one for PS3. Play the PS3 version now more than anything else. Less little kids or people with the minds of kids on there, and atleast on my TV the color is alot better on the ps3 version (probably the HDMI and the settings on my TV make it look more accurate colorwise).

Very impressive.
But man, I just don't get it.
I've been a first person shooter fan nearly all my gaming life. I got into PC games when Sin first came out.
I just don't get everyones obesession with CoD4, it just hasn't hit me I guess. Sure, the campaign is way fun and looks absolutely gorgeous on any platform you play on (PC,PS3, or 360). But the online play for me is lacking. Nothing new, almost feels bland to me. Without the XP thing, it'd feel like every other online shooter out there.
Not to bad talk CoD4 or anything, it's just my opinion.

@Balance_In_Life (PSN): GRAW and GRAW 2 both take place in Mexico (Mexico City, and Cuidad Juarez).

Wow so they made $495 000 000 off us and couldn't throw us a bone and give us the map pack for free or at least make more than one original map for the pack,that hurts my fuckin head.Keep in mind i did the math at 55 to remove the retailers take.

WW2? Meh. Playing COD4 I thought a really great hard SF FPS could be built on it. Not BS like the Quake excrement, but something inspired by contemporary military SF.

@reptile168: Infinity Ward won't, but Activision /is/ ordering Treyarch to take CoD back into the WWII trenches...
*hopes the suits realize it's doing so well because of both the new setting and Infinity Wards commitment to quality... possibly not...*
