Call of Duty 4 Variety Map Pack Hits PS3 Thursday
Posted by Michael McWhertor at 1:20 PM on April 22, 2008
PlayStation 3 gamers who've answered the fourth Call of Duty will get their version of the Variety Map Pack this Thursday, a DLC bonus that Xbox 360 owners have been enjoying for a few weeks now. The new maps will hit the PlayStation Stores in both North America and Europe. In additionally good news, this weekend will be a "Double XP Weekend Extravaganza" giving Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare players twice the experience.
The official word from Infinity Ward is that the devs will be available for headshotting on Friday, April 25 from 11AM to 2PM PDT and from 5 PM to 8 PM PDT. It should give us something to do while we wait for the Metal Gear Online beta to go prime time.

@DELICIOUS BUNNY: All 4 maps are great, 2 Large maps, 1 small and 1 mid-size. You can find a lot of vids of them on various sites.

Still no lovin' for the pc players who paid for the game.... so lame. As much as I love consoles, I hate the fact that they've made it acceptable to charge for map-packs.

@Jatt: Wont the maps be free for PC gamers? and they'll problably be much better quality... not saying that making you wait is right but it almost seems like an even trade-off.
Personally I dont think ill be pickin this up any time soon, Need to save what little money I have for MGS4.

I'm still torn about dropping the 10 bucks on this...on the one hand, it's the best online game I have for my PS3 (just shy of GTAIV for now obviously) and one in which I play alot, but then on the other, that's like 1/6th of paying for a game right there.
I feel like it'd be better put to use to buying another game...did I mention GTAIV already? :)
Now if it was $5 instead, I'd be all over it

Yeah, i am more jealous of the PC users who can get user created maps. The UT user maps & user content i have downloaded for UT3 on my PS3 is fucking incredible. I wish more devs would give this option for PS3 games.
Sony should be whoring this feature out as it is one of the true advantages they have.

Too late. GTA is coming out next week. Why pay for maps now when I won't be playing that game for months? They'll probably be cheaper by the time I feel like playing again anyway.

@Jatt: Damn dude, nice video. I play on the PS3, but I'm kinda thinking of getting it on PC. Not sure if my PC could run it though. I'm interested in User Created Content like that remake of crash at the beginning of your video.

@YagamiIchigo: Yo thanks bro yea LOL that aint user created content its infinitywards or was christmas present. But you could make any type of map you wanted to. But for some reason they never feel as solid exp as the ones created by IW.

@Rebel Without Applause: I'm not so sure about that. They're enjoyable.
Broadcast takes place in the filming studio. It's a nice change of pace, and so is Chinatown.
Creek on the other hand is just open fields...and inevitably a MILLION snipers. Don't understand why people can't pick something else.
...What else am I missing?

@Detre: Problem is that 90% of the maps out there suck and the ones that don't require a fairly long download if you just hop onto a custom server. Our clan has our own server and we set up a mod server too but it was just constantly empty so we ditched it. The fact of the matter is that people want to play official maps that don't contain tons of exploitable glitches and other long download times. Don't get me wrong though, I'm not trying to shit on the modding community, there has been some very good maps released but nothing to the standard of an official map (that I've found anyways).
The thing that pisses me off the most about this is that IW won't even confirm a PC map-pack, they could very easily say that the map-pack will be released on PC at an undisclosed time for an undisclosed price. Heck!looking at the number of people paying a WoW subscription every month, I bet a good 80% of COD4-PC owners wouldn't mind spending the €10 or whatever the cost is to get more variety and rejuvinate the game.
In short, us PC users deserve official support. C'mon IW! Get off your ass and make the announcement already!

@Jatt: Oh nice, IW did not give us a christmas present! >_< Oh well, maybe next year?
How is the User Created Content on the PC version anyway? Anything good? Anything worth checking out?

@MasterDex: Don't know what your smoking, but there seems to be lot more players playing on custom map/mod servers than on the official map servers.

@Jatt: There is TONS of free maps online though. It doesn't take that long to download if you got a decent connection either. There is some crappy made mods and maps, but you know.... just don't play on that server then. There is tons of amazing maps made though, just gotta go to the right places.
@Yagami Ichigo: There is some really cool maps folks have made. One of the things the community has done is create a ton of LARGE maps as the PC version supports up to 64 players in some servers so the maps that come with the game were just way to small. Even with only 32 players on the PC, the maps are still too small.
The recreation of Alcatraz island is a favorite map of mine on the PC :)
There is also some decent mods, like zombie warfare...

@DELICIOUS BUNNY: They're all very good.
Broadcast is my personal favourite. It has a very nice mix of close-range and long-range action. The curved room with the very large glass windows (from the main story level, Charlie Don'tSurf) makes a very nice choke point.
Creek has a little village with a few houses and whatnot, but most of the action takes place in the main valley-type area. Lots of sniping to be done. I like to use the R700 and M16 (with overkill perk), lots if fun to be had.
Chinatown is great too, much more than just Carentan with a lick of paint. It is probably the best level in artistics terms. The action is frantic, lots of ways in and out of the different houses. Silenced MP5 is the way to go here.
Killhouse is good for one on one games. My friend and I enjoy playing that level using just pistols. It's a bit too small for much else though.
All in all, well worth the $10. I should also mention that the integration into the main playlists has been excellent, the new maps come up as often as the older ones do (although Broadcast seems to come up more than any other map period).
