Crash Bandicoot: Mind Over Mutant Impressions
Posted by Flynn De Marco at 9:00 PM on April 28, 2008
Good old Crash Bandicoot, he takes a licking and keeps on ticking. And tick he will in his next game, for the Xbox 360, PS2, PSP and PSP. It is a follow up to Crash of the Titans and this time the story takes form in a spoof of the iPhone. A techno device has hit Crash's world that everyone wants and MUST get their hands on. What they don't know is, this device is being used to control their minds by nefarious forces. The only one who seems to not be affected by the device is Crash who must use his powers to save the day.
The title includes plenty of the platforming levels that Crash is famous for, but also includes a more free roaming aspect than previous games. Crash uses an arsenal of powers including a new dodge move and combo attacks as well as capturing enemy powers that can be used later. These powers can be used not only to defeat other enemies but also to solve the various environmental puzzles that you are confronted with. There is a limit to the number of enemy powers that you can carry at one time however, so be sure to stock up wisely. And don't be discouraged if you can't figure out a level right away and be sure to remember that there are multiple ways to solve every puzzle. Often the key is matching your enemy powers with your environments. Crash will include a co-p mode where an additional player can add in as Crash's sexy friend Co-Co. No online mode is in place yet but it is something that is being considered.
While the graphics looked great and it was definitely a new game in many respects, this ultimately seemed like more of the same to me. I can see this game appealing to the younger set or die hard Crash Bandicoot fans (?) but more than likely most regular gamers will find it a bit typical. Of course I could be wrong and this could be the title that brings Crash back to his former glory. Then who will be laughing out of the other side of his face?

Naughty Dog and Incomniac's franchises, after being passed onto other companies, go stale. Happened to Crash, happened to Spyro. That's why Naughty Dog isn't letting anyone touch Jak, and why Insomniac's holding so tightly to Ratchet & Clank.

I'm looking forward to this. I really enjoyed Crash of the Titans :(
(so much that I've been considering getting it on PSP. I already have it on 360)

@DaiMacculate:
Sony isn't and hasn't been associated with Crash for quite some time now...
The first 3 games were awesome, everything after that? no.no.no.

I just remember seeing Crash after playing Mario 64 and wondering who the hell would want to play a game where you can only fun forwards and backwards.

Heh, are we sure its a parody of the iPhone? Seems to me there is another portable device everybody wants to get their hands on that Sony particularly dislikes (The Nintendo DS), way more than the iPhone ;)
Just something that occured reading the description though.
Also, no offense to Crash but I kind of had assumed that Ratchet and Clank had taken over as platforming "mascots" for Sony, I know I find them far more compelling as characters, personally ;)

Sexy friend? Flynn...dude...its his sister...
Maybe this is the reason that Crash cant talk, rampant inbreeding.

I hate to be cynical, but these days I think Crash is about as relivent as Duke Nukem.
Their time has passed, time to bury them and move on.
Plus we all know frogger owns crash ;).
Naw, just kidding, don't cane and lynch me...

Yo Flynn, I think one of those PSPs is meant to be a PS3?

@PaddyStardust: All Naughty Dog (Crash - Jak - Uncharted) games, who have now gone on to bigger and better things like Insomniac (Spyro - Rachet Clank - Resistance). I loved CTR even more than Mario Kart and I 110%ed Crash 3.

ever since Naughty Dog gave away the franchise, i basically stopped being interested in Crash Bandicoot.
especially since i once tried a demo of a new version and just didn't like it for whatever reason.
Especially since Jak and Daxter felt like an evolution, and crash bandicoot felt... a bit aged.
the originals were classics though. loved it so much back in the day.

I think there are more deserving adventure platformers out there that need a sequel.
How about a Beyond Good and Evil sequel or heck I'd even prefer to see Kya 2.
Of course those are different properties and such so it's not like I'm blaming the makers of Crash for not making sequels to other games. You know what I mean though.

I remember that time too.
I miss the old days of Crash Bandicoot 3, and Spyro 1.
This game doesn't look too good though, and I really don't like the character model. He just doesn't look like Crash to me.

@pandafresh:They would be fools to, honestly.
@scarshapedstar: It was a fun little platformer but when you brought it right up against Mario 64, it got it's ass kicked.
@Ashurahori:I never, never understood after all the hype for Crash why ND let him go or why Sony never really followed up with the 'mascot' path they had put Crash on, he was pretty much at the for-front of the SCEA ads for the late 90's.
Sad fact is guys, no matter how much we may dislike these games, they sell.

Seriously, when are they going to bring Crash's visuals into current-gen visuals. That' two games in a row now where they used PS2 assets in the 360 game. It looks TERRIBLE!

Sadly, Crash hasn't been the same since Naughty dog left the helm. Crash has gone the way of Sonic, except Crash's descent into obscurity happened a lot faster.

Screw these new Crash games. When I get a PS3 I am downloading all the original Crash games off the PS Store. Those games are still my favorite games of all time! I have yet to play a game that brings that much fun and excitement.

I just posted on the Spyro thread saying how I love those and I have the original PS Spyro games, but the Crash games are my all time favorite games! When I get a PS3 I am gunna download all the original PS Crash games from the PS Store. All the new ones suck, only the original ones for me! Good times.

Crash was great, back when Naughty Dog was making the games. And that's another thing, what's with these once great titles coming out with lame ass sequels? I mean back when Insomniac was doing Spyro and Naughty Dog was doing Crash Bandicoot everything was fine. But when Sierra got there hands on these titles all their sequels started to suck. If you want me to be impressed by these sequels then get the originals developers to do them.

Also, is this from the devs of Crash of the Titans?

Eurgh, I hated Crash, I found him the most unloveable character ever. It was like Sony's answer to Mario and Sonic, and it was horrible. Right up there with Croc in 'games I really hate'. Still each to their own.

Its not going to be on the Wii? Shame. Crash of the Titans had the best damn 3d co-op platforming experience ever and Mario Galaxy's controls actually felt clunky after playing through Crash.
Seriously, Twinsanity and Titans are both rather good games and its a shame most people can't get past their "Durrr its not Naughty Dog" bias to actually enjoy them, its not like Sonic or Spyro where the recent 3d games in those series are actually really bad.

I've never liked any crash before but after trying Crash of the Titan demo, I actually went to buy the game, and it turns out to be entertaining. I especially enjoyed the hijacking animal part.
According to the screens, we can still hijack those animals, and if it's a worthy sequel, I think I'm gonna buy it.
