Draft Update: Picks 21-32
Posted by Owen Good at 6:00 AM on April 27, 2008
And now we're into the final grouping of the draft, picks 21 to 32. Max Payne, Solid Snake and Quake Guy boosted the firepower of the draft considerably. How will the rest of the picks shape up?
21) ManjiKengo selects GUTS from Berserk Millennium Falcon Arc "Guts wields a giant slab of iron he calls a sword and goes against all insurmountable odds, including his own limitations to continue his cause of revenge and justice in his own way against his former friend, leader and current God-hand, Griffith. He loses himself to his rage during his battles against demons and human foes alike. But he shows the best and worst parts of what makes us all what we are, Human.
22. Owen Good, Kotaku.com selects SPY HUNTER "First, it's a bad-arse Porsche 911. With machine guns standard. And smokescreen, oil slick and missiles as options with approved credit. Oil slick especially, since you can control how much it spits out, and a little dab will do the Switchblades every time. And if that's not good enough, Spy Hunter turn into a boat which I guarantee blew your mind the first time you did it too. The only question is whether Spy Hunter or Weapons Van is the true MVP here." 23. enewtabie selects: NATHAN DRAKE from Uncharted: Drake's Fortune "He's the best character to come out in years.I mean, really where can you find a guy wearing a wrinkled t-shirt,who is a good shot and can find more treasure than Indiana Jones. I wish I had his hair, but not his luck for getting shot at. Pretty much the best character from the best game on Playstation 3."
24. NeoAkira selects VECTORMAN "Vectorman can use his body to transform into a number of tools, including a drill, a bomb, an aquatic form and much more. With those kinds of abilities he can just about manoeuvre around any obstacle you put in front if him. With more plasticity than Silly Putty and the power of a tank, Vectorman gets my pick for the Greatest Video Game Character of All Time."
25. Gambia selects MANNY CALAVERA from Grim Fandango "Critically acclaimed travel agent, nightclub owner, ship captain, revolutionary. Excellent puzzle solver and one half of the greatest gaming love story ever told. The fact that this suave and sophisticated character is already dead also makes him that much better. He's invincible, provided he doesn't get too close to your green house. And, what could make him that much more badass? He's death, the coolest of all personifications, that and an obsession with jazz music, gambling and racketeering."
26. Adam S. (Owen's co-worker) selects JUMPMAN (Commodore 64) "My introduction to video games, plus the guy is amazing versatile. He can shoot, has 10 speed settings (the highest being insanely fast) and comes up with neat tricks in a pinch (like the Hot Foot level). Also, unlike Mario, Jumpman could pull himself up, jump directly on and from ladders, and didn't die if he fell 0.5 inches."
27. Mr.SithNinja selects RYU HYABUSA from Ninja Gaiden "Ryu Hayabusa has outlived most of the consoles that he has appeared in games for, going back to his arcade debut in 1988. Ryu's moves are swift and impressive while difficult to master. His arsenal of weapons are both impressive and effective. In the right hands, he is the deadliest character ever, finishing his opponents with the style and grace that only a true ninja could posses. Ryu Hayabusa is such as bad arse that other bad asses stalk him and want to be him. (Yeah, I am looking at you again Master Chief!)" 28. Maldron selects HIGH OVERLORD SAURFANG from World of Warcraft "High Overlord Saurfang is generally considered to be one of the most fearsome characters on either the Horde or Alliance. Considering he auto-counterattacks critical hits for 12,000 damage in a game where it's difficult to get over 10,000 HP, he's somebody I'd want on my team. High Overlord Saurfang is a serious bad arse, a well known powerhouse, and therefore a logical choice for a draft."
29. aethyr selects ARTHAS from Warcraft III "Former paladin of the Light turned Death Knight, servant of Ner'zhul, Lich King. At the conclusion of Warcraft III: The Frozen Throne, ascended to a higher existence when he merged with Ner'zhul to become the lord of Northrend and possibly the most powerful being in Azeroth."
30. Ra on the A-Team selects MILES EDGEWORTH from Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney "Edgeworth has proven himself to be one who believes in justice. While his co- workers and mentors may choose to not see the truth in favour of getting the verdict they want, Edgeworth has gone against the grain and even worked with the defence to see those responsible put away. He fears no one in the court room and has saved more than one person's life."
31. Atheist Jew selects SHODAN in System Shock 2 "Her ineffable malice towards organic life, her total insanity, and her disturbingly cold plans for the universe in general make her one of most malevolent and purely evil villains in gaming history. SHODAN believes herself to be a machine goddess, destined to reformat reality in her image. Her madness is a threat to every organic race in the entire universe, and she will kick your ass."
32) Fletch Good (illustrator of the epic Pac-Man dookie post) selects ASSHOLE DOG from Duck Hunt. "You know, seeing that Super Mario, Pac-Man, Lara Croft, Master Chief, Samus Aran, Link, Pitfall Harry, Kyle Katarn, Tecmo Bowl Bo Jackson and Pengo are all available here doesn't change my mind at all. Because when you add it all up, all the shots fired at this dog — from the Zapper in the home version, from the pistol in the arcade — millions of millions of rounds, some of them aimed between this son of a bitch's eyes with the barrel 1 mm from the screen, and he never got so much as a scratch — this is the most fired-upon indestructible motherfucker ever. More bulletproof than 50 Cent. Would laugh at Dick Cheney." (picture) Next: Grade the Draft!

this draft gets an 8/10 for me? why?? because I love the fact that people stayed away from the most obvious choices (including Lara Croft, Master Chief, Mario, and Samus)

@ManjiKengo: @Lezard: Man, when was dissent outlawed here on Kotaku? I fail to see how the logic behind my opinion, which I have explained twice now, is deemed unintelligent just because you disagree with it. Feel free to disagree with my reasoning; but please, don't lower yourselves by throwing out insults.

@enewtabie: Exactly. I spent far more hours playing and enjoying Blood than I did Halo or Mario Backgammon 7: The Curse of WaBowser: Hyper Redux Megamix 8: Director's Cut: Blue: 42: Hut: Hut: Hut: Drywall. So picking someone from those games would be hypocritical of me.

@KidU: You want to see one? Scroll up. Calling the endeavor an "F-" without any explanation as to WHY it's such a failure is rude.
And frankly, how video game characters are judged as good picks is completely subjective. In the world of Tetris, the I-block is king. The Asshole Dog is freaking invincible. There is a logic, if a humorous logic, behind these choices that can be seen if you just stopped to read the reasons behind each pick.

@KidU: Owen is grading the picks, not you.
the prupose of the draft is to instigate INTELLIGENT discussion on these characters and why they were picked, not "why the draft sucks" and "WHY ISN'T INSERT POPULAR CHARACTER HERE, HERE?"

Personally, I read all the draft picks and more than half of them just made me go meh.
I think it might be better to limit the draft next time, if this kind of thing continues. To something like old school characters, or N64 characters, or something like thing. That's my two cents.

@SilentPredator: I picked a character who I would want on my team. If he were on any other team, I feel I would fear for my life. There were several other favorites of mine I would've loved to have chosen, such as Jehuty or Beyond the Grave, but when it comes right down to it I think I could take them if I had High Overlord Saurfang on my team.
It's a draft, I have to think in terms of who would bring victory, not in terms of who I know and like. If that means I come up with somebody obscure, that's fine.

@SilentPredator:
Honestly, Owen said
"
1) The character does not have to be a title character. You may select an NPC if he's particularly bad-ass.
2) Real-world people who show up in video games are draftable. This includes sports figures.
3) Robots, vehicles, mechas, animals, nonhuman, nonliving characters, generic character classes from FPSes count too. You want to draft the Katamari wad, fine. Whatever everyone can control if they own/play the game, it counts."
I feel we were all within the limitations of our rules and guidelines.
Personally I beleive we all chose great characters. There are only 3 characters I wouldn't want on my team if I was drafting for a "HEAVEN OR HELL" team.

@Lezard: You are free to think my opinion is unimaginative; I am free to think that a draft should operate like a real draft wherein as I stated earlier, teams pick the top players. LeBron James would not drop out of the first round in an NBA draft just because picking him would be unimaginative or unoriginal. Also, please show me a single post of mine that was rude, I'd like to see it.

@ManjiKengo: You are a god among men for picking Guts. Kudos for managing to get one of the best manga protagonists of all time on the list by citing the game Berserk Millennium Falcon Arc ~Seimasenki no Sho~, which he was featured in. That was one of the best import games I've played in awhile.
I hate rating things, so I'll just give this list the clichéd "thumbs up".

The games themselves are SO good. Despite Guts getting the shit kicked out of him constantly he always seems to come out within an inch of his life.
The story though is unfinished right now and I seriously hope Sammy considers bringing the PS2 game to the united states.
It's a huge injustice not to allow gamers in America experience the story and the sheer "GRIM AND DARK" of Berserk.

My pick "justification" was edited. ( Seeing the format I understand why ) I went an a rant about Master Chief stalking Ruy by dressing like a woman to be with him in DOA and how in Halo 3 he spends a lot of time collecting skulls in order to dress like Ryu. Then it took a disturbing turn from there..... Let's get say if it were put into a regular post it would en cite a fan boy riot and a possible banhammer dropped on me. ;)

Hoo boy. Quite a few aimed at me, so I'll try to address them in one fell swoop.
@ManjiKengo, @Maldron: I'm not begrudging anyone of their choice. I know full well that people could choose who/what they wished to with no restrictions. I'm not saying that every person's pick is horrible, bad, whatever. As I'm not even sure what it is exactly the characters are being picked for nor do I think there is an absolute rule as to who is a good choice and who is not. These things are subjective. Perhaps my words were poorly chosen.
As I stated before, I only recognize about 1/3 of the characters of all the lists on a whole. I'm fine with people picking characters that aren't popular or main stream. It just seems that, not individually but as a whole, people intentionally avoided the more famous characters. That's just how I perceived it. It may or may not be true.
@ShaggE: If you think that I'm angry or bitching then you are mistaken and being entirely too defensive.

Lets get back on topic shall wee? This was supposed to spark a debate on each of the characters picked not on how much you can have a hall of fame hissy with the whole article because there's no massively popular characters were picked. After all I picked a character I genuinely loved who is obviously awesome. And, to be honest Owen has been cosmic in letting Joe public write just what they wanted when he could have been all; "Only pick popular characters that everyone will know" But granted the freedom of the choice is what made the some of the choices that little more obscure.
Also, I almost picked Abe but then didn't so we've all avoided a massive bullet in places especially the fact that no one picked the same two characters.

@KidU: What is your reasoning? That in a real draft, people would pick Master Chief before the I-block?
Master Chief wouldn't do shit in a game of Tetris. He would also be a spectacular failure at dating sims. And frankly, if all of the bullets in the world couldn't kill the Asshole Dog, what chance would Master Chief have?

@lionkitten: Master chief would have been a good choice if halo 1 wasn't the only good game in the series. Halo 2 and 3 were just a rehashed version of 1 with a new box and extreme over-rating. The only games that can be re-released is the majority of the N64 library with better graphics. They should do that with every new console and I'd be happy.

I was hoping Nathan Drake would make it when I saw first page of the drafts. And here he is! Amazing game, with great main character. Hope we get more games to follow his action-filled story :)

@Lezard: The Asshole Dog is God in disguise. The Asshole Dog made my day. If there is anything that would make you commit an act of animal cruelty it's the Asshole DOg.

@HIGH OVERLORD SAURFANG #28 ...
Really love the idea of the draft, but some "Chuck Norris-ish" crap that only the most hearty of fanboys would know about shouldn't be on the list. I also would like to shun myself for actually looking up something that had to do with WoW. Bad aveneyer...

The fucking birds from Ninja Gaiden were the best pick by far. Good job Fahey.

I woulda went with a builder lemming, due to the fact he could make that straight up and down pole trapping every lemming inside a wall

So, Ryu is #27, meaning the odds are stacked against him. Just the way he likes them.

You know, it's funny. As I was reading some of the previous picks I was thinking to myself... "Who would I pick, given the chance?" And the first thought to pop into my head was Manny Calavera. Lo and behold, I click onto this pick, and there he is.
"This deck of cards is a little frayed around the edges, but then again so am I and I've got fewer suits..."

Is it a bad thing that I don't really know any of the characters from this thing?...

For anybody who's complaining about the draft picks, you don't seem to get it.
The point is for them not to choose the obvious ones.
If all of them were idiots and chose "Samus, Mario, Link, Master Chief", etc..
It'd be boring as hell. What's the point in reading it? We all know those classic characters are great.
Kudos to them for being interesting.
