Gears 2 Info Spews Forth Like Blood From A Head Wound
Posted by Luke Plunkett at 12:55 PM on April 8, 2008
The latest issue of Game Informer isn't quite on news-stands yet, but it is in the hands of subscribers. Said issue has a big feature on Gears of War 2's singleplayer, with all kinds of plot, character and gameplay revelations to be found within, all of which has somehow ended up on the internets.
Know, then, that the game's drop-in, drop-out co-op play will let the two players select different difficulty levels. And that there's another vehicle mission, only this time in a tank. And that Clifford Bleszinski says "We have creatures that make the Brumak look like a baby panda bear". And that there's a ton of new characters introduced, with Cole & Baird not with you at the start of the game. Should be enough to get you excited, but hey, if it's not, you could always scrape the pennies together and get a copy of the mag yourself. You cheap bastard.

I'v always wondered how GI manages to get some crazy cover story every month. I last month it was Alpha Protocol and the month before that it was the new Aliens game, Champoins AND Red Faction 3.
It's just crazy-ness.
But i look forward to this. Gears was a smashing good time.

@Barf#1: Hey, Gears is a manly game. And violent. And Gears 2 is even manlier and violent!
I was just about to go to sleep too, and then I read this! Now I'm going to be up all night.

I'm a little disappointed that there won't be four player co-op. I figured with Halo 3 raising the stakes, Gears 2 would rise to the challenge. Aside from this admittedly minor point, everything about this game sounds fantastic.

I notice it contains a PS3-wiimote "Waggle" rumor. Along with the other article about the 360-wiimote, I have to wonder what effect, if any, having Wiimote functionality in competing systems would have on the Wii.
All I know is, keep that waggle shit out of Gears 2.

GI is definitely the best mag to subscribe to if you don't subscribe to any other ones. They're usually the first to unveil a crapload a games (even if they are months and even years away often). I get OXM for the disc (usually) and EGM for its occasional big cover story (SC4, etc). Unfortunately, I don't have this issue yet, even though I'm a subscriber...

that driving level was tacked on it made the game go down one whole point because of the sheer pointlessness, despite gears of war being a tech demo to show of Unreal 3 it was the best damm game I had played in ages

Im not gonna lie Ive had GI subscription for ten years and they have never disappointed, but they have cut back on their reviews to give the reader more in depth, exclusive, content like Gears.

@Strangelove:
That and the rumored Road Rash Sequel is mentioned.
The article's a nice read. Albeit it isn't the full mag info. From the sounds of it, seems like they're integrating more story into it. I remember the first one lacking in that area.
Hmm makes you wonder how will they implement the "super casual" difficulty setting into the onliner co-op mode. One has more enemies than the other? The easier setting has "softer" enemies and easier to do head shots?!
I personally liked Gears. I just hope they don't take anything away then put it in the PC version. Yes Burmak baby panda I'm looking at you!

@ArmyofJuan: GI's owned by Gamestop, and being the major player that it is in the gaming industry, I get the feeling there's some cross-pollination going on between the mag and the devs. That's probably how they get all their exclusive info.

@Darth Navster: Yeah, FOUR PLAYER COOP. GODAMN. I mean, really though. The games already got four players that are pretty well developed, should knock the multiplayer up a notch.
Also, No driving level. That was the worst part of Gears. Either that or how miserably bad Dom's AI was if you rolled the single player game.

Hmmm. You know, I didn't need to read that. I was looking forward to the game, but this convinced me that this isn't just another sequel. This is the kind of sequel that makes the first game seem like a practice session. Those kinds of sequels take over a season and ... folks, biggest seller of the holiday season. Right here. And it'll be worth it.

Well hopefully this game remembers the originality. The Epic's last endeavor to win dollars from my wallet seemed a bit shallow and suffered from the "been there, done that" syndrome. And sure, the first time through the amazing tightness (get your mind out of the gutter) and beautiful graphics were enough to over look it, but I'm expecting a little more this time. This time I expect it to be fun (burn).

Can you crotch this time around (ducking next to low objects doesn't count)? Anyhow, knowing Epic, they'll hype the game to the max, proclaiming that it can only be done on 360 (and that the system works miracles). Then turn around to make a PC port a few months later (with superior content) and declare it the proper version of the game.

@Captain Impulse: is it actually owned by gamestop? i mean i even worked for gamestop at a point in my life and i didnt know that. Because i'v seen GI at Wal Mart and grocery store magazine isles so i always assumed that GI and GS had some sort of contract with each other. But i didn't know that GameStop actually OWNED GameInformer. That would explain some things...like the coupons inside the magazine...

Hopefully Gears of War 2 draws me in more than the first game. The first game felt too limiting in terms of gameplay. I loved the story and the entire atmosphere of the game, but I didn't like how limited and constricted it felt to just hide, shoot, hide, shoot, hide, shoot till everything's dead, then use ONE button to run to the next wall, hide, shoot, hide, shoot. Hopefully gameplay is more dynamic in Gears 2.

What, no 4 player coop from the get-go? Party based MP? online up-ranking (makes people come back for more..)
Come on to fk, aren't titles meant to get better? Gears 2 needs to at least try to beat out halo3 and cod4.

sounds a bit more like an expansion than a sequel, not that i expected anything else. but i wouldnt mind a sequel to try something a bit different than the usual new weapons and enemies aswell as the obvious slight gameplay tweak that didnt need to be done.

The team at Epic is well aware that many players out there hunger for a deeper and more involved storytelling experience.
I like the sound of that.

Will this be as overhyped as the original? I'm guessing that it will be. Ugh.
My biggest problem with the hype the original got is that it's continually touted as the graphical benchmark by which all other next gen games have fallen woefully short, and I literally just don't see it.
