Grand Theft Auto IV Review: Life, Liberty City And The Pursuit Of Happiness
Posted by Michael McWhertor at 3:20 AM on April 28, 2008
Grand Theft Auto needs no introduction to anyone remotely familiar with video games. But for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 entry in the series, Rockstar has upped the ante, creating a startlingly realistic reinterpretation of New York City as backdrop to a violent crime epic. In it, damaged goods Serbian war vet Niko Bellic ventures to Liberty City to in search of closure, while coming to terms with the harsh realities of The American Dream. People die, others find happiness, players join Niko on a journey through a world where everyone is flawed, where it seems everyone is consumed by their own obsessions.
It's a brutal ride for almost everyone in Niko's journey from off the boat yokel to mass murderer, but what is the Grand Theft Auto IV experience like for the player?
Loved
It's A Hell Of A Story: Niko's life in Liberty City is violent, tragic and enthralling. Rockstar North's ability to make the player emotionally invest in GTA IV's characters is a rare achievement—and this is one aspect of the game that the team came close to perfecting. Outside of a handful of either slightly annoying or forgettable cast members, GTA IV's supporting players are as much of a draw as firing RPGs at a car filled with Russian gangsters then fleeing from the LCPD at high speeds in a Turismo.
You Belong To The City: The level of detail packed in to every aspect of Liberty City's boroughs is simply astounding. On a micro level, seeing the neighbourhood change from industrial to residential, from posh to sketchy, is impressive. Taking a macro perspective of whole islands during a leisurely helicopter flight can be awe-inspiring.
Shooting The Shit: Combat works. With a free-look option for targeting whomever your want to be on the receiving end of a bullet and a lock-on reticule for quick, dirty, accurate gunplay, ventilating lowlifes is precise and almost entirely free of frustration. That Niko can pull off headshots with analogue precision is something I wish I'd learned to perfect earlier in the game. That said, trying to shoot out someone's tires with any accuracy while doing 90 MPH on a motorcycle isn't handed to you on a plate. Trying to shoot while driving can be frustrating—especially when the mechanism for switching weapons is remapped—but sensitivity options certainly help.
Friends With Benefits: You may occasionally grow weary of fending off friendly invitations to go for a drink or a trip to one of the cities fine gentleman's clubs while you're busy trying to recover someone's heroin, but cultivating friendships is more beneficial than not. The pay off—helpful nurses, gun running buddies, posses on demand—make your life in Liberty City much easier.
Driving Mr. Bellic: With two solid dedicated online racing modes and a slew of street dragging side missions, Rockstar had to get driving right. It did. Pulling off bad-arse parking brake U-turns is oh so satisfying. GTA Race—think Mario Kart with RPGs instead of koopa shells—is a better effort than many dedicated driving games. GPS directions are very, very welcome.
Multiplayer: GTA IV's fifteen multiplayer modes, each with a host of options, could have easily comprised a standalone release. Simple Deathmatch is fun, but playing it on Happiness Island with nothing but rocket launchers and knives makes it shine. Team-based modes, like Cops 'n' Crooks and Team Mafiya, elevate multiplayer from simple fragfest to strategic, frenetic car-jacking fun.
The Extras: Watch hours of television. Take on challenging assassination missions. Perfect your darts game. Shoot the flying rats—all 200 of them. Establish new friendships. Go on dates. Surf the Web. Stunt jump! When you're done with GTA IV's main story, you'll have plenty of fun just messing about. We were amazed to find how much there is to do.
Radio, Radio: So many guilty pleasures: Q Lazarus, Genesis, Godley & Creme. Some new favourites: The Boggs, Justice, Boys Noize. Talk radio is genuinely funny and ad spots provide hilarious social commentary.
Hated
Some Characters And Plot Threads Fall Flat: One of the characters, who is intended to have an impact on the later portion of the game, is hard to care about on the level that Rockstar asks of the player. Some of the end-game relationships simply don't carry the same weight of those established in the first half, making it hard to be invested in some of the drama and can ultimately make one of the final chapters feel forced.
Some Missions Are Maddening: Of the 155 missions I attempted, 64 ended in failure. That's fine, but some seem impossible on the first attempt and others come close to resulting in thrown controllers. Missions are quick to restart, but by your third or fourth attempt of The Snow Storm, you may be looking for a Rockstar dev online to kill. There's not much in the way of mission filler, but some jobs are definitely more memorable than others.
Grand Theft Auto IV is a powerful game. After blazing through the core story line, having made certain decisions that affected how the narrative played out, I longed to return to the world to experience what I had missed. I recall watching every one of the game's trailers after completing it, reminiscing about GTA IV's tragic, colourful yarn. It's a hell of an accomplishment on many levels. Graphically, it's not as pretty as some other PS3 or 360 offerings—to which it will be unfairly compared—but what it may lack in pixel pushing performance, it makes up for in visual design. Using the cell phone as an interface for maintaining relationships, seemingly a minor thing, is brilliant.
Sandbox-style, ultra-violent games like Grand Theft Auto aren't typically my thing, but GTA IV has made me a fan. A fanboy. Rockstar North has addressed virtually every single one of my personal hang ups about the series, crafting one of the most memorable experiences in gaming. We hate to gush, but it's just that good. Flawless? No. But it's about as close to a game can come to being perfect.
Grand Theft Auto IV was developed by Rockstar North, published by Rockstar Games and is due to be released on April 29. Retails for $59.99 to $89.99 USD. Available on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. Played single player campaign to completion on PlayStation 3, played additional single player campaign portions on Xbox 360 and tested each online multi-player mode on Xbox 360. Total game progress on first completion was 65.67%, with 94 missions completed over the course of 35 hours.

Yes, but are there any remnants of that mini-game DDR bullshit?
I swear if Niko has to bust a move to accomplish something, I'm busting the disc.
Eh, screw it. I'll know for myself in 9 1/2 hours.

Oh, and one little detail: sometimes you'll see something subtitled in gray (as opposed to the standard white). That gray stuff's being said in a foreign language, but it's translated to English in the subtitle. I've got subtitles turned off now after having them on for a while, and that's the one thing I miss. Occasionally a character will shout something in Russian, and it was nice understanding what they were saying. A little bonus to using the subtitles.

Oh, and just so you know, the subtitles are turned off by default, so you've gotta got in the menu under the audio options and turn them on. You might end up missing out on the subtitles on the first minor cutscene, because I'm not sure you can get to the menu until after that, but the cutscene is just a basic, "Here's Niko, here's him arriving in Liberty City" thing.

I can understand frustration if you are hard at hearing and/or deaf but wouldn't you be getting some of the "$60 dollars you paid to preorder" back if you were selling them/trading them in instead of shooting them? I hope this doesn't carry over to other things that enrage you. If it makes you feel better write Halo3 on a DVD-r and shoot that and save yourself some cash.

@NKato:
Just to expand on my previous post, I'm 99% sure that all story dialogue is subtitled both in and out of cutscenes.
There's also some other non-important dialogue that pedestrians and such will say. I'm not sure if that stuff is subtitled.
As for other things that would affect you, a lot of stuff is dependent on your cell phone. That's how you receive a lot of missions. But all the cell phone conversations are subtitled, and there's even an on-screen indicator noting when your cell phone is ringing (a little phone next to a person's name for a call, or a little envelope next to a person's name for a text message).
Also, you can hop on the internet in the game and there's a lot of stuff to read, which is a great way to help immerse yourself in the story and Liberty City.
All in all, I can't think of anything that would even hamper you slightly in really enjoying the game.

Do you have any idea how long I've been trying to get this particular, tiny-teeny tidbit on GTAIV?!
Two months, man, two months. Maybe more, but the last two months I've been trying to get specific, concise, confirmed information on the subs.
And two months ago was when I plunked down my pre-order.
(The reason I'm mad about Assassin's Creed was that I picked it up because I got so hyped up about it without doing research first...then after finding no subtitles at all, I researched and found an article about the devs saying they didn't have time to add them in...17 billion dollar industry, and no time to add a trivial thing such as subtitles compared to bug-quashing? BOLLOCKS!)

There are definitely subtitles outside of cutscenes. When you're talking to people on your cell phone or talking to people out in the world, there's subtitles.
I'm not sure exactly how exhaustive the subtitles are, though. I've only had one mission that involved a shootout where I had an ally on my side, and I don't remember if there were subtitles when he was yelling out to me or if I even had subtitles on at the time.
But yeah, there's certainly subtitles for at least most of the stuff out of cutscenes, I'm just not sure if every single line of dialogue is subtitled.

@Kotaku
OK, people. I am getting angry, and aggravated!
I'm tired of beating around the bush. I've sent emails to Rockstar. I've tried contacting some of the Kotaku editors about this. I've tried contacting other editors, too. Hell, anyone off the top of my head that could have received a review copy.
What am I trying to find out? SUBTITLES.
For the love of Jesus' Golden Left Testicle, If I'm going to plunk down a $60 preorder for a game I think might be able to break the monotony I've been experiencing in the world of video games,
I'd LIKE it if people would at least provide information on the extent of subtitling support! The last thing I want is to play another Assassin's Creed. (You'll know what I'm talking about if you play it and try to find subtitles with your volume muted)
Halo 3 was another purchase I had made in the past, and it disappointed me for the singleplayer experience because there were no subtitles outside the cutscenes, which left me unaware of battlefield circumstance changes.
The discs for both games are now in pieces on the floor at the local shooting range. I make it a point to literally waste any game that fails to meet my expectations and leaves me feeling robbed of any percentage of my money.
Sixty dollars is a lot of money to me - considering that I am barely making any disposable income for myself.
So, Kotaku,
I want answers. And I'm getting sick of beating around the bush. If I have to take out a loan to buy an airline ticket to visit Rockstar North and beat the answer out of them, I will.

When I did the math of the known reviews (that give out a grade) the total average came out to a 99.22222.... Basically, two reviews have given it something below perfect (one 9.5, and a 98%). Taking this into account, with around 5 or 6 reviews giving it a perfect score, (add them up, divide by total number of reviews) and I got the answer above. This is why I feel that R* deserves the perfect score. That and the criticism is o minute that it hardly registers.

But...I want a score. A number score please. My life is incomplete without cold, hard digits to anchor an otherwise ephemeral existence. Please, just toss out a 9.5 or a 10 so that I can convince myself that I am not going by mere hearsay or conjecture, but rather the far superior and completely arbitrary numerical value tossed out to the world by a single person.
So if you could fix that, I'd appreciate it. Nice review, though.

Car handling comes down to a new physics that they are using. Cars do handle differently, but it is more chocked up to realism, as well as the roads being more real (poor districts have poor quality roads). It is supposed to be more like a real racing game than GTA SA, which only had basics for handling and speed.

From everything I've read, the differences come down to this.
Graphics:
Overall, the PS3s graphics are supposed to trump the 360s. Less pop up/fade in, better anti-aliasing, smoother textures etc.
Controls:
The PS3 does make use of the sixaxis motion, but by all accounts it pretty much sucks. Plus you have a mandatory tutorial.
Downloadable Content:
Supposedly the PS3 is supposed to get some type of content, but no one knows what it is compared to the 360s supposed "extra island" (Still don't know if it is an official extra island or what).

I've got a buddy who works at a retail store and was able to nab a copy early, so I spent a large chunk of yesterday playing. Let me say, the game is phenomenal. In my 8 hours or so, I have only two complaints:
-Some of the characters are a bit over-the-top. That's certainly the same as it was in past GTAs, but GTA has never been this realistic, so it's kinda unfortunate to not see all the characters make that same step towards realism.
That being said, I've been struck by some of the humanity in the characters. Thanks to the tremendous writing, voice acting, and facial animation, the characters are surprisingly capable of evoking emotions. There's a lot of hilarious moments (like when you first call your cousin to invite him to a strip club), but there's also a number of poignant moments. And beyond those moments, it's very easy to like some characters, and it's very easy to dislike some characters, without those emotions ever feeling too artificial.
-The only other issue I have is an element of the graphics. And surprisingly, playing it on the 360, it's not the pop-in. There's some of that, but it's largely inconsequential. Sometimes when you get some speed going in a car, some traffic will pop-in up ahead, but it's certainly never bad enough that it makes driving any more difficult. The more egregious instances of pop-in are low-priority stuff like patio furtniture at the edge of the screen, etc.
The issue I have is with the shadowing under overpasses and elevated train tracks and such. The shadows look like they have that Mass Effect grain filter applied, but only on those shadows and on a larger scale. For me, it's the one graphical element that ever pulls me out of the experience.
Also, I've never seen the PS3 version, so I don't know if the shadowing is the same.
Anyway, those are the only two complaints I have. Otherwise, it's seriously extraordinary. From the little things, like certain animations that will surprise you or the stories on the internet in the game, to the big things, like the amazing writing and the great action, Rockstar nailed this.

@Ignorance's Enemy: think theyre actual flying rats, or pigeons (which are sometimes refered to as flying rats)? I imagine little brown rats, with like 3 red balloons tied to their backs by a piece of string, jost hovering around the city, going where the wind blows them.

Good review. Initially thought the 10/10s were just IGN being overly enthusiastic (again) but this kind of honest review makes me think that it may be worth the hype after all: and it is pretty damn hard for something like GTA IV to live up to it after months and months of rabid hysteria.

Interesting that you led with the strength of the narrative, since that hasn't always been the series string points.
It gives me hope that the developers seem to have invested as much into progressing this aspect of gameplay as the more technical accomplishments.

Too anyone who's played it. How is lock-on handled in multiplayer? Is there an option to turn it off?
Having instant lock-on in multiplayer is going to make or break the online experience for me I think. If all that is require d to frag someone is to hit LB and tap upwards for a headshot, ala crack down, then it's going to really destroy the skill and timing elements to the online combat.
This is the one concern I've got.

Not surprised about the maddening extra missions, each of the games have a plethora of what seem like impossible missions.

Great review.
I'm interested in the hard missions, especially. I completed the previous iterations to 100%, but wouldn't necessarily refer to myself as a 'hardcore' gamer. While some of the missions were frustrating, I didn't find any of them remotely impossible. The worst ones for me were the ambulance missions - I sort of dread and eagerly anticipate an analog to those in IV, if they exist. I'll hate doing it, but once completed that rush of accomplishment will be euphoric.
Gah! I'm doing the earthworm squirm in anticipation. Amazon sent me a notice this morning telling me my copy has been shipped - which kicked my nerve endings into high voltage.

@pROvIs: What partner? >.> And what conclusive links? :P My frustration is directly associated with the lack of subtitles in some big games, not the video games in general.
And about blasting apart games that fail: I don't do trade-ins, because as you said, it prevents the manufacturer from getting royalties. I personally think that if a developer can get a larger piece of the industry pie, they can at least put some of that money towards developing subtitles.
Though, Valve implemented subtitles in Half Life 2 in just two weeks because of the 100% integrated Closed Captioning code they installed into the Source Engine from the ground up. (Which is a rule of thumb: If you want to appeal to all audiences, always integrate subtitle support early in development.)

@McWhertor (or anyone else who has spent a significant amount of time playing the game prior to its release):
One sentence of your review really stood out for me, "Sandbox-style, ultra-violent games like Grand Theft Auto aren't typically my thing, but GTA IV has made me a fan." I really, really don't like the violent open world games with a shitload of driving (on the other hand, I love stuff like Oblivion, which is open world). I haven't liked ANY of the GTA games. I didn't like Crackdown. I hated The Godfather (the game) and still think Saints Row is the worst game I've played on the PS3, Wii or 360 (and I've played Spider-Man 3). Taking that into account, do you think this game is different enough -- good enough -- to make a convert of someone with my dislike of these sort of games (I don't mind the violence as I've played all the others and am a huge fan of survival horror, Gears of War, Bioshock, etc.)? Anyway, hopefully someone can answer this. If not, I gave it a shot.

Loved the review. Can't wait for the game. My 30 got RROD back at the begining of the month, but apparently it will be back sometime this coming week. Can't wait to celebrate by playing GTA IV!

Better hurry with that comparison review so the fanboys and run to other forums and start a shitstorm!
Great review, nonetheless!

I'm pleased to hear the story is worthwhile in this, as GTA's 1-3 never had a decent protagonist to connect to and SA's CJ felt like the greatest trope and then hippocracy on said trope ever created. Only Tommy Vercetti has ever been the character who I wanted to suceed the most. Looks like Niko will also be one of those. Roll on Tuesday! Course this means I have to do all my tutorials on Monday night.
Lazyness Vs GTA...hmmm. Tough to call.

Well, you guys already know my opinion, but it looks like the game is good since the positves seriously outweigh the negatives.

Well so far i'v been enjoying it. I was so excited to see San Juan Sounds! That station totally took my by surprise. But i love all the sations really. It's a very good mix of music to listen too.
Although i'v been trying to do some online play but there doesn't seem to be too many people on. I guess because it's not out yet. But if anyoen wants to play on 360, please let me know

Where's the PS3 / 360 comparison? I don't see anything I can flame about here...

@Sloopydrew: Me not being a fan of genre is definitely not me "hating" the genre. I played portions of GTA III, Vice City, The Godfather and Crackdown, but only one of them have I ever finished, mostly due to not being passionate about this type of game. GTA IV has definitely changed my opinion, but if you're really that down on these type of games, you may want to ride the hype wave out, rent or wait for a price drop.

I really look forward to playing this once I return from Spain in a week. And that's a lot more than I ever imagined to say about a GTA game.
And yes, I can wait. :p
