GTA IV Multiplayer Down For PS3 Players
Posted by Michael McWhertor at 9:20 AM on April 30, 2008
Even if you're particular copy of Grand Theft Auto IV doesn't lock up your PlayStation 3, you may still find it a challenge to experience the online component of the game. Crecente posted earlier today that he was having connection issues, but he's not the only one. We've heard from a number of tipsters that they've been unable to connect to the Gamespy hosted servers, with a quick peek at popular online forums reflecting similar complaints.
We've already contacted SCEA who tells us that they're aware of the issue and "looking into it." Calls to Rockstar Games' support line have so far gone unanswered. We're awaiting response from their public relations team and will update when we hear more. In the meantime, PS3 owners who are experiencing connection issues with GTA IV should let us know in the comments.

Multiplayer fail! Random crashes get! Inbetween this the game is great! (when I can see it... have got the contrast/brightness cranked right up). Did nobody who reviewed the game notice these issues? Why the salivating 10/10 scores everyone?

Yeha I have also had huge troubles getting online, as in in the dozen attemps I have not gotten any thing. once I got to a lobby screen then BAM, back out to single player. all the time "connection lost" which is bull because it chucked in COD4 (how I love you) to check and it works. PLUS I was signed in to the PSN the whole time.

Can only agree with @Pax Bisonic, apart from the crashes i had all the issues, can see stuff because brightness/gamma/saturation too low (fine on other games on the same TV), no go at the multiplayer either.
Oh well, hopefully they'll fix it, but the 10/10 reviews seem to turn out to be a lot more hyperbole than first expected. Nevertheless, fantastic game.

Hi, I'm having a problem with GTA now too, I can play the main game no problem, and the multiplayer WAS working great too, NOW however everytime I select the multiplayer option from my phone it signs me in then when I go to click Games it freezes, I've tried numerous times, I've even tried waiting for a moment THEN pressing but it freezes before I press, any ideas?
I started a new game as i've used cheats in this one but it still doesn't work unfortunately, should I remove my game data?
Any help would be greatly appreciated, i've been searching around forums and it seems no one else has this issue from what i've seen

Online looks fun. I have had the game for about 2 weeks now and was able to play online for maybe a combined time of about 5 minutes after wasting about 500 minutes trying to connect. They better fix it quick or I don't think anyone will be looking for a GTA 5---at least I won't. Until then, I will be looking for other ways to burn $60.

The online is hopeless. Rockstar for god sack fix it already. Dont just take our money and leave us with this gimp online version...shame on you!!! Its especially annoying when I only play online . I spend average about 1 hour trying to get a game. It always looses the connection. I dont have this sort of time to waste everytime I want to have a quick game. Also add a search filter in so auto aim and non-auto aimers can find each other.

@slomo788: "In terms of robustness, both services are equal. The only difference, again, is cross-game invites and how far each company is willing to open it up."
Still not the case though. Sony does not have an unified integrated matchmaking service the same as MS has, and Sony does not provide servers for third party games. These issues will continue to pop up until the above two things change.

All of you stop crying. This is day one. I'm sure this'll all be resolved before the week is out.
There's just no pleasing anyone! We're such a spoiled generation that the moment something goes wrong we're crying like friggin' babies.
The single-player game is like 40+ hours without all the screwin' around so enjoy the single player for a few days or get a life and just wait for the online to come back.

Posted 10:19 AM 30/4/08
@rotcepsurt: From what I read I understood that the service itself was out of shape, and I didn't retract my statement. You were lucky (just like some PS3 owners now) and it only lasted 1 day for you, but Kotaku followed it for (at least 15 days) and just recently Live crapped out again because of the CoD4 DLC. In terms of robustness, both services are equal. The only difference, again, is cross-game invites and how far each company is willing to open it up. stupidfanboy was being a... stupid fanboy and I reacted to his level. But I'm sure by the end of the week it will be smoothed out. If not, the game has around 100 hours of gameplay and the learning curve is steeper than earlier GTA games. In other words, there's much to do before getting fragged online.

Its worked for me since I got the game early and played over the weekend, and thankfully somehow its also survived the onslaught since last night too.
Sony has been really irresponsible... MS knew there would be lots of people accessing online, so they ramped up their hardware infrastructure... what was stopping Sony from doing the same? Now we get this. What was stopping Sony from advertising the bejesus out of the game, like MS did? Just relying on people's idea of "GTA is a playstation game" is off the walls stupidity. They keep shooting themselves in the foot.
It surprises me that a company as poorly run as Sony manages to make any money at all. /rant

Posted 10:15 AM 30/4/08
please forgive my ignorance but why the hell does Sony use Gamespy? UT3 uses Gamespy on PS3 and while it works, it's not what I'd call a "great experience" overall. Is there some underline reason that makes Gamespy preferable?
@DazeOfWar: alrighty...point taken but as many people that like to stand on the soapbox and proclaim the virtues of Live as if it's the second coming of Christ, I believe the overall argument (at least from my perspective) is
a) does PSN offer P2P and dedicated servers - yes
b) does PSN offer voice chat and stat tracking - yes
c) does PSN offer friends list and invites to games and options to customize matches - yes
d) does that make PSN better than Live - no
E) does that mean that PSN service is terrible - no
For the GTAIV online issues...see the beginning of this post...
But this constant redundant, broken record argument "as if the world sees the 360 as a RRoD POS, so the MS Defense Force MUST tout the virtues of LIVE to for the masses"...is getting old. LIVE IS the better service, that has been established...but I challenge anyone to tell the legions that are playing MGO, Warhawk, Resistance and CoD 4 on PSN that the service is trash.

Why would it be Rockstars fault when Gamespy and Sony is suppose to be running the online.
I do plan on buying a PS3 in the future(most likely far future) when there is a more variety of exclusive games that draw me in. I will play it online too, but no matter what anybody says Live is way ahead of PSN just because MS nows online alot better than Sony because of PC gaming and the 5 year advantage.
I do feel sorry for the PS3 owners that can't play online. Hell if I had the issue too I would be pissed. Hopefully it gets fixed for you so you can experience the whole game like it should be.

@MarshmallowMark: Wow, what an incredably ironic statement. One would think that if you were going to call someone out for a grammatical mistake, you would bother to get it right YOUR self.
Let me fix YOUR statement for you. Instead of this:
"Even if your an editor on Kotaku, you'd think you'd know the difference between "you're" and "your"!"
It should be this:
"Since you are an editor at Kotaku, one would think that you would know the differnce between "you're" and "your". "
If you are going to be an asshat about grammar, then you should at least get it right. Next time make sure YOUR prescription helmet is securely fastened before trying that again.

@stupidfanboy: ONE PS3 game does not work online for SOME people. The game in question is the most anticipated game this year and came out TODAY.
Live didn't work for months, and not only for one game, but for ALL games.
Live has one advantage over PSN: cross-game invites. PSN is free, open (UT3 mods), it's not a pain in the ass for devs and has been proven to be a robust service (32/40/60 players, 8 player co-op). I love how some people get into that stupid misconception that if something is free, it must be shit.

That's what you pay for. I play warhawk online just fine but i can no longer see a reason to pay for xbox live.
Warhawk, Lost Planet, CoD4, and Gt5 work fine for me online. People like you need to just go away and stop lieing about owning both consoles.

@idrisz:
Which I understand. But if you're going to make excuses like that, then people aren't going to expect a quality experience from it.
Plus, even the free (silver) version of Live is pretty darned good. Huge selection of demos, access to all the media and downloads. The only thing you don't get from it is the online play. But considering the demo and media selection is superior to PSN, I'd say even the free version of Live is better than PSN.

My copy actually locked up during the initial load sequence...I instinctively deleted game data and reloaded, it worked fine...(60 gig model) as for online stuff, it seemed to work fine last night, although I didnt get to play a game online, I did get to create a character
BUT!!!! as of earlier this afternoon, I could not establish an initial online connection in game. And also, I am getting signed out of PSN more frequently than usual.
good damn thing there is a sweet ass single player game to be had.
Not for nothin, but I jacked a car my first time out, and the dude tried to open the door as i was pulling away and he hung on for almost a mile as I dragged him at obscene speeds. I giggled like a girl. He really didnt want me to get away with his car!! LMAO

I should've got the 360 version. Between this, the freeze outs, and the 630p, it sounds like the PS3 version has gotten the shaft on this one.
Although if XBL comes crashing down, I'll feel a little better...

Um...Hang on there chief...I work in the industry and the pain in the ass for Dev's system is the PS3...No one at my company likes developing for it...especially online...I frankly can care less about Sony's Online service because it's garbage...But I mean with Home I think it shows a huge potential. At this point its out of Live's league. Don't even get me started on Nintendo. And Live was never down for months...Get your facts straight it was out for 2 maybe 2 and a half weeks...I should know I had a game in test at the time and we couldn't even get onto PartnerNet so we had to monitor it closely...
It's funny cause recently on the Kotaku's article regarding MS preparing for GTA server overload all you Sony fanboys came running glorifying your PSN...Hehe the irony...

I, for one, have been experiencing terrible problems with Live in regards to GTA IV. I've only been able to play one game online, other than that, whenever I access the multiplayer through my cell phone I get the loading screen followed by a Disconnect-Return to single player notice. I've power cycled my modem and my 360 to no avail. And from what I can tell on the GameFAQs boards, many other 360 owners are also having this problem.
How about everyone here in Kotakuland. Anyone else experiencing this problem on Live? If so, how did you fix it?

I'm not saying hug MS for their lack of foresight but please stop swallowing PSN's semen... I know it's protein but that doesn't make it healthy... geeze! I'm glad Sony does it that way, since that's why several MMOs are coming to PS3 next year. It makes it easier for them to get on the console, and more appealing to end users to not have to pay extra fees if they only use the game's servers. Also works just fine for many other games like MGO. ;)

Can we relax?
Umm. the games been out for less than 48 hours and some people are pissed that they can't connect to the what, Millions, of other players. Take a chill pill. Play some single player and don't worry- All the problems will be ironed out. I really didn't think that multiplayer was going to work right off the bat. Don't get me wrong, I've been primed about multiplayer since I first heard about it. And Jesus, wouldn't it be awesome if every thing worked without a hitch, alas it isn't a perfect world. GTA is freezing on both systems for different reasons. Rockstar will issue a patch (these are the times we live in) and all will be right with the world (except for war, famine, global warming and the like). Or else there will be hell to pay.
Also to all the 360 fanboys who posted before. Relax. Yes, I know you abhor the PS3. Yes, I know that LIVE *never* craps out. Yes I know your system can play this game online right now. Good for you. You are a better people for buying the 360. Really you are. I...I love you man.

@Mongoosekun:
Wasn't trying to be a jackass or to come across as some Sony basher. Again, I own both systems and their are several things I think the PS3 simply dominates the 360 by (built in wireless, web browsing, easy upgrade of the HDD, etc), but it just pisses me off to see fanboys from either side always doing the same old "No worries, I'll just ignore this gross incompetence and wait while the other console gets it right :)" line. These are the same kinds of posters which will use the "PS3 has no games hurrrrrr" argument or bring up a tired old RROD comment - neither of which has any validity today.
Maybe I'm just sick of all the console bashing and MS/Sony/Nintendo apologists. Sorry if that offends so many of you. I have my preferences that I've based on my actual gameplay experience, not just blind faith in either of the money-hungry companies.

Wow, I didn't know about Gamespy's involvement, so when I went to the multiplayer option in game and the phone said "unable to connect to host" or something along those lines, I thought maybe it was supposed to be an in-context message and I just needed to play further in the game to unlock the multiplayer. It's pretty disappointing that's not the case. I plan on doing a little more exploring around town before getting into the multi though, so I'm OK with a short wait.

Sure, I'm kind of perturbed, but I'm having so much fun with the single-player that I don't mind waiting. It's sad that it's only been out to the public for like a day and everyone's already bitching and having fanboy arguments about PSN vs. Xbox Live. The bitching would've been alot worse though if Rockstar didn't put multi-player at all. It's not like Grand Theft Auto IV was meant to be an online game, they just added it to make the fans happy. They're going to fix it eventually. I bet most of the crybabies haven't even beaten the first couple of missions.

First of all, Multiplayer is up.
Second off all Sony is not hosting the servers, R* is and they used gamespy not Sony. Third, This is the first time R* has something online and 360 has its own servers so they didn't need to set them up while ps3 gets dedicated. This also means well have a faster connection based on the people around us which is why dedicated is better than P2P.

I couldn't connect at all last night. I hopped on this morning before work and was able to get on and play a quick team deathmatch game.... and it was awesome.

On the launch night, it would let me into an online game only to close the game just as we were going to start. Yesterday, it wouldn't even connect to the servers (couldn't get past the cell phone menu).
@sailorcancer...who they heck told you that?

Hasn't worked for me since 1:30am on the 29th Doesn't work for 2 of my friends, worked for my brother for about an hour, then stopped.
I'd probably be talking to rockstar, not sony. Last I heard Gamespy had nothing to do with sony.

Works fine.
Mike, are you trying to start a flame war?
Oh wait, why do I even need to ask that. ;)

Same problem here, I actually go to the game room, but when the game is about to start...a error appears on the screen: "unable to connect with one or more players, returning to single player"
Strangely the first nigth I was able to play it online, I'm guessing that the volume of people in the servers is the main reason for most of the current issues.

Comment on GTA IV Multiplayer Down For Some PS3 Players Yeah, I seemed to have problems logging on last night as well. Would your model PS3 have anything to do with it? Or is this strictly a gamespy issue?

Comment on GTA IV Multiplayer Down For Some PS3 Players Pause l> Go to STATS. Hit X Go to Network And it will more than likely say you need to Sign in with your PSN ID in order to get your online stats. So the game is not showing you as logged in to your PSN ID however im perfectly signed in. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Save Paper - Do you really need to print this e-mail?
