Iron Man Behind-The-Scenes
Posted by Mike Fahey at 2:40 AM on April 5, 2008
Developer Secret Level displays a pretty firm grasp on the abilities of Iron Man in this developer diary for the game of the same name. It does an IM fan proud to know that the dev team, purchased by Sega specifically for this project, had to figure out a way to create gameplay that Tony Stark couldn't just waltz through. Not only do Secret Level and Sega understand Iron Man, they also understand that it isn't a real developer diary until it's narrated by Electric Playground's Victor Lucas. It's true!

First, I dislike when a publisher is talking in present-tense about a game based on a film that isn't even released, nor a blockbuster.
Second, I am aware how Not-well Superman did for gaming recently. The sandbox game theme can be fun (see Crackdown and GTA series) but needs to have LOTS of interesting features, side missions, and cool "hidden" features.
Lastly, it looks good (they did use the object data from Lucasfilm) and this film is on my "must see in 2008" list. I hope Secret Level pulls it off (under SEGA). And good luck with Golden Axe; looks good.

Cool part: It's the actual model used in the movie. :D

Wow, it looks like they actually put some thought into Iron Man as a character.
Color me impressed.

It looks like they're doing a good job. Let's hope that the movie doesn't suck worse than the game.

If there is one franchise that I would like to see well translated into a video game is this one. I hate it when all those movie to video game turn into crap and this time around I'm crossing as many fingers as I can hoping that it will not happen.
The one thing I would like to see for this game is that they would use a lot of the material from the comic books and not just the movie, but so far I haven't seen any indication of that. So seeing a fight against a gigantic dragon is probably too unrealistic and out of the question.

Well, I'm a tad more hyped than I was before.
But I should mention, I'm pretty susceptible to hype, which translates into an array of mediocre games in my cabinet.
However, I learned from my mistakes, and I hope these developers learned from past mistakes of others too.

If this game sucks I am going to be pissed at Sega. Not that they have not pissed me off for MANY reasons before this though.

Looks good at a glance.... I hope it has depth. I would put forward that most of the problems with movie license games is the dependence on the hype, and very underdeveloped RPG system and plot. "Shoot and smash, get bigger shooters and smashers" Decent plot and (meaningful) customization would make a lot of games more attractive in the long run. I guess that's not exactly an earth shattering thought...

I hope its truly an open-world game. I have high hopes that they just dont screw it up the way Superman did.

@qsceszwsxasd: How is getting missions, flying around and blowing up all kinds of stuff boring? I mean, all you do in Crackdown is jump around and blow stuff up. And it's still damn good. Plus, there's also upgrading the armor, God of War-style QTEs for cinematic fights, and other stuff. Remember Spider-Man 2? All you did was swing around and punch a few people. Didn't stop it from being extremely enjoyable.

I never understood comments that praise games like these before its release. I mean, it's so easy to tell that the game will be absolutely horrible with the little snippets of gameplay shown inbetween the devs talking. All you're going to be doing is getting missions, flying, fighting the same tanks and enemies, then repeat the process in some different setting. It's like the Simpsons game, you see game footage of the Simpsons 'mash buttoning' and solving stupid puzzles, yet people still think it's going to be enjoyable.

the way they were talking about the game it really sounded great, but too bad that its a movie game and that it looks as bade as most movie games are... :( I feel bad for the devs.. I bet they could do way better than that :/
