Funny thing is, everything went smooth as butter, but when I start the game, there is an update (v 1.01), and every time I try to update, it only gets to 28% before there is a "network error".

But this stuff always happens in beta testing.

My Ps3's been sitting in the closet to be honest. Playing the 360 just comes to easy with most of the games I play. Call of duty Halo3 Gears. I bought Warhawk played for a week about puked and put the ps3 in the closet. Till now. Got the beta went through hell getting it ready. Waiting up to get a chance whenever to play it. Guess what!? Dont care. Ill wait frustrated as like everyone else to get to play it cause this is just one of those great moment games with what ive seen from MGO even better experience through Multiplayer. @Schoolimangooli: Betas aren't just for testing gameplay. In fact, that's almost always a pretty small part of the test. Gameplay issues can usually be ironed out with simple internal testing or with focus groups, etc.

Most multiplayer betas are more focused on testing the servers, seeing how they behave when put under the stress of having a lot of players online. That's what's happening now. The servers are breaking because of the massive amount of people trying to get onto the game. This IS what betas are for. We're having these problems now so that when the game comes out, the servers will be better equipped for the load.

Connection problems like this are exactly why we have this beta in the first place.

Regardless of it being BETA or not, there are certain levels of proficiency and functionality that these game developers should have mastered last gen. One of those things they should have mastered is handling an on-line environment. Add this to Konami's three-step registration process, and what you end up with is a huge headache, compounded with interest.

Well tonight I finally got registered at konami ID website, first try too, so they must have fixed some stuff.
Having got my confirmation email I immediatlely fired up the PS3 and logged in.
I got a few new screens, but when I try to start a game I get the (0911:00000003)error.
I guess they're not officially open yet (I'm in Europe by the way).

heres the thing I'm wondering though, I don't have a Beta key, I just downloaded the game from the Playstation store and did the update with the bittorent.
At what point would I need to input the beta key, since I already have my id and password am I ok?
I have a feeling I can't get in without a beta key, but god loves a tryer, and i've made it this far...

Also, there are about a million or more people in the US trying to log into the servers, trying to get a free key from the registration site, and people pounding the servers trying to get IDs. This is causing an unintentional DDoS (Distributed Denial of Service) attack. When the attack comes from legitimate sources, it is very hard to control. People need to calm down with log in attempts if they want to Konami to even have the ability to fix things.

Just because it's a beta doesn't give them a free pass on everything that goes wrong. The fact that their web servers have been struggling for days, and the fact that a Konami ID was never even mentioned on the beta ticket (the paper with the code that came with Metal Gear Saga vol. 2) displays an amazing lack of foresight on Konami's part.
And don't even get me started in the entire Konami ID system. The only thing it's good for is to prove that MGS4 will not come over to the 360 because apparently the company has a vendetta against a coherent online system. Why they didn't simply utilize the PSN id is beyond me.

The failure to have even such a simple system to work speaks to the ability of Konami to deliver an online infrastructure that's dependable. Remember they ultimately want people to pay for the products that use this online system. It's shit and they don't seem to get it. They've underestimated the whole thing and if people don't yell now, they will be yelling louder later.

@Archaotic: That's the thing, it's not "early." The beta was scheduled to be released at midnight CEST time (GMT+2), which means it started at 6PM EDT (3PM PDT) today.

As for official word from Konami, their Japanese website has a few updates. The first says "The server's having problems, we're trying to fix them." The second says "The server crashed again, we have no clue why, but we fixed it again." The third update basically says "We don't know what the fuck's going on"

As said before many times, this IS A BETA... but nonetheless Konami have been caught with their pants down (and poopin' in a barrel) with the demand. I'm quite surprised something like this can happen, given that you'd expect Sony to be helping out with a flagship title like MGS (providing resources, expertise, etc.).

Although this is also an indicator of how well MGS4 will sell come June 12th.

As long as the server issues dissipate by May 6, I'll be glad to tough it out :)

Im a software engineer, BETA is NOT A DEMO, Beta is a beta is a beta. Sometimes (most of the times) beta's have a rough start, like we are seeing here. This is one of the reasons developers try to keep beta's out of the general public, it makes the developer look bad sometimes.

Since I write firmware code my beta's never reach the public, but when I release beta code to our internal testers and my boss, I always give them a list of areas they may find problems with so I dont get bombarded with issues I already know about and at the same time I don't look incompetent to them.

@muu: Valid points on FFXI and the server stability. As far as MGS4 goes though, its draw is still, and has always been, the single player experience. Now however, since Xbox made mulitplayer online all the rage for console, a badly setup online portion will probably make people whine loud enough to hurt sales.

As far as setting up servers though, a corporation that large can get a bigger server architecture set up in about 2 weeks. Of course they'd have to take current servers off-line for the upgrade, which will make people whine more.

This argument does work at times, but... we're looking at under 2 months before the full-fledged launch of MGS4. Do you seriously believe that they'll be able to order, and then set up, necessary equipment for a decent world-wide launch?

I was watching in amusement from 0:00 JST, as the servers over there was dead from the start. Konami's previous server efforts (Tokimeki Memorial Online, etc) have not been too stable at the start either, only to get better as a huge number of people gave up trying. If MGS4 means anything to Konami they don't want something like that happening, as a good online portion is definitely an excellent way to prevent copies from flying to used game retailers worldwide.

Final Fantsy XI is notorious for shitty server updates as well, but at least once you're in, you're good. The bottleneck over in that game is the update server. While Konami seems to have covered its ass on that part with BitTorrent file updates (which may cause problems as some Japanese ISPs already have filters in place to block/slow P2P traffic), it's no good when the main game server is clogged.

@Jeff Paine: Well yea the login issue with "incorrect login" and the like are isolated to EU regions only. But the cannot connect to server issue is a US problem. I get that error too, being in the US.

Also, don't blame Ashcraft. For him it is officially the 21st since he's located in Japan.

The servers are not up, what a knee jerk reaction article kotaku. The servers are not going to be going up will 12am pst.

Reason people are getting errors is because most are in regions that the servers are not on yet for.

I am very eagerly anticipating the game, and one can expect a reasonable amount of screw-ups for a beta... but even I will admit, this is way too much. Konami has got to fix this for a number of reasons.

1. It could affect the sales of the game. It wouldn't surprise me if people got so mad by this screwed up online issue that they sold their PS3's.

2. It affects the review score of the game. Obviously if all these issues are fixed for the final game it won't matter, but if MGO sucks, it could really hurt MGS4's final product.

3. It makes people want to play it less. Even those who buy MGS4 and are die-hard fans may be hard pressed to come up with excuses to play a broken game.

I love the premise, but I really hope this game is fixed for launch.

Kind of off topic, but i got to try out MGO at comic con this weekend. I'm not a big metal gear fan, but I really enjoyed it. It's not anything you haven't seen before, but it has a nice feel to it. I'll probably pick it up just to give me a reason to play ps3. I hope they fix the issues, its definitely worth trying.

I'm not worried. Since no-one can get any playtime in they will extend the Beta just like they did for H3. Otherwise they aren't going to get enough feedback on what needs to be tweaked. No point getting so angry this early on, this is a learning experience for Konami which will lead to the whole process/structure becoming more tuned. Hopefully.

@Kojiro: they got the time in between May 5 - June 12 to do all that, but we're still talking about a fairly short time-frame. They're going to have serverloads several magnitudes greater so you'd figure they'd at least be half-ready to take that percentage of beta testers on. I hope things change (and hope they do too, if they plan on making money through DLC content), but prior efforts sure do say otherwise.

Hmm I guess Ashcraft may just be one of them disgruntled MGS fans who put down five bucks in hopes that his "BETA" code was going to assure him in the "BETA" without any problems. Well I guess "BETA" these days means full working game or it's shit. Just have patience, it's up till May 5th, you'll get to try it and then what not. After that we all have to wait a whole month anyways for the actual game. Is it that hard??
