Mario Kart Wii Disc Read Problems?
Posted by Brian Ashcraft at 2:00 PM on April 15, 2008
Return of the Wii disc-read errors? Maybe! This echoes when Super Smash Bros. Brawl launched in Japan, there were reports of disc-read errors were blamed on the console's optical lens being "soiled" by dust and cigarette smoke, making it unable to read the dual-layer disc. This time around, some Japanese gamers are also reporting read errors, freezing and crashing — however, Mario Kart Wii is a single layer disc, and thus, the Wii shouldn't have optical lens issues. Nintendo has said its not aware of the problem, and the issue doesn't seem to be rampant, so.

@Sloopydrew: Doesnt even compare to PS2 disc read errors, xbox fat controller, etc. etc.
I suppose the last generations didnt have RROD, but this generation has the internet for most problems at least, and patches, whereas that was unknown during the last few years.

BLAH whatev I say. If they made Wii Fit work, theres no reason why this game can't.

@Sloopydrew: I don't know what you're thinking of, but save for Brawl (which didn't seem to be a very widespread issue), I haven't heard anything about the Wii having massive hardware issues.

I swear, this is going to be remembered as, "The broken generation." The only one I've had that has worked flawlessly is the PS3 and I hated it's controller so much I took it back. Still, I do have fun with the Wii60 setup and I'm looking forward to Mario Kart. If online works as well as it did on the DS, I'll be happy with the game -- as long as my console can read it.

I don't want to jump the gun here but Nintendo should recall all 24 million Wiis and offer a full refund for the system and all games purchased!
...right. The Wii as a piece of hardware is almost infallible so I think a little cleaning will do the trick (again).

So....... this is even less of an issue than the Smash one was?

If a couple of guys on a forum coincidentally get a disc read error or crash, it is suddenly called an epidemic.
I think the title is right. This is a rumour for now.

@mishakoz: @HawaiianActor: Damn... If Only I read this 3 minutes earlier. Was thinking the same exact thing.
=/ Maybe It's not smoke and it's just that the Nintendo 1st Party Games are being published on a handful of bad discs?

"Nintendo has said its not aware of the problem, and the issue doesn't seem to be rampant, so."
So... why report on it if it's a few isolated incidents?

@mishakoz: LOL.
That seems odd... It could be something completely different that no one has noticed yet. I wouldn't have a clue what, though.

Don't blame nintedo guys... once big scary optical data started becoming mainstream Nintendo freaked out. Anything with more than 16 bits in it = nintendo has a panic attack.
I'll give em props for being the masters of 1980/90 technology. Anything more recent though and nintendo engineers have a mental breakdown.

I dunno what makes the 360 so complex. Apparently everything is an included add-on for it. Almost nothing built in except for the HDD. Not to mention the fact that MS has been working with computers (that have thousands of add-ons) so for them to flop so hard is a greater failure than if Nintendo made the same mistake.
I'm all for speculation, but your claim that "if nintendo had made a system as powerful as the 360 or ps3 this generation it would have had the highest failure rates" is pretty baselss. I'm pretty sure the DS is more complex than any handheld they'd ever made and, oh look, no hardware problems. So to say they'd mess up the hardware is baseless speculation at it's best. (not trying to insult but that's what I get from your comment)

@NeoAkira:
I have a wii but it still is a flop in terms of modern day functionality.
The wii has less problems because it is far less technologically complex when compared to the true current gen systems.
My graphic calculator is more reliable than a wii does that mean it's better? No it's just not nearly as complex.
I promise you if nintendo had made a system as powerful as the 360 or ps3 this generation it would have had the highest failure rates. Sadly we wont see a nintedo based system with 360 like functionality until the next gen sony and MS systems come out.

@Len Bias Cocaine Surplus: You know, considering he seems to have a new product to hawk every 4-5 days, I wouldn't be surprised if he had something like that by year's end. Oh, and it'll come with new Power Putty which will allow you to easily mount your sensor bar on top of or below your flat screen monitor without any problems. (After all, he can never sell ONE item at a time)
Personally, I'm thinking this is just another few people having the occasional issue. If it gets up to 5 digits worth of people complaining, then I'd worry about it. Then again, I don't play on buying or even renting this game. I've yet to find one of these kart racing games that's kept from boring me in short order, and from all I've heard and seen, this is just going to be more of the same.

Oh I also missed this little tidbit "The wii has less problems because it is far less technologically complex when compared to the true current gen systems."
I had not realized I was dealing with a graphic-whore here. Allow me to express my deepest apologies that you consider pixel count and processor speed as determination of what makes something truly next-gen. I was under the impression that next gen was the next iteration of a past console. Hence why the N64 and PS1 were in the same generation bracket. Otherwise the PS1 had half the graphical power of the N64. But no, it's cool keep believing we only have 2 "true" next-gen consoles this generation. It gives me a good laugh to see people like you comment as though you have something worthwhile to say.

I'm not sure about this "lens problem" to be honest. Rather, its a euphemism for weeding out modded Wiis.
I got read errors galore on SSBM and MKwii until I upgraded my modchip's firmware. I'm using retail discs mind you, and seeing how my modchip was preinstalled on my ebayed wii (only way I could get one at the time) sending my machine in to Nintendo wasn't an option.
A buddy told me of a recent firmware upgrade to the modchip, and as luck would have it, I saved myself another run to Fry's to buy a wii (now that they're in stock.)
The retail SSBM and MKwii run perfectly now.

On the subject of Disc Read Errors, my imported Brawl (NTSC game, PAL Wii) always has to be inserted once and go through a terrible whirring noise which sounds like my Wii is dying. If I leave it, I get a Disc Read Error. If I eject and re-insert, it seems to work but I still get the odd 'chugga chugga chugga'

I did have a disc read error 1 time with MK, but it never happened again and i have a quite a few hours of play. It runs just fine with no skipping at all.

No, I didn't have problems with Smash. I had another known problem with the Wii -- the gpu, or something or another, ends up getting too hot and breaking when WiiConnect 24 is left on (all the images start having horizontal lines going through them). That's what happened to mine. I no longer run WiiConnect on my fixed console -- unless I'm using the console at the time.

If you read the last comment from the author of the blog (in Japanese), he says:
"Sorry, the problem just came from my Wii. It's an old one that we're using for demo in the shop; it's probably dirty."
Here we are. One Japanese blogger has a problem, it becomes "there are problems in Japan", on other sites "many gamers reported problems" and the bubble grows. How a rumor starts on Internet.

Cause Kotaku editors now get paid based on page views. This is an easy way to whip up a 100+ post thread, full of fanboy dick-waving and schadenfreude, over a perceived failure by Nintendo. Based solely on a vague Internet rumor no less.

I'm late to the party here but, my Wii was sitting downstairs where renovations are being done. We are currently at the drywall sanding part and as anyone who has done this knows this makes a HUGE mess of dust. But the thing is working with no flaws. I think that excuse might be a cover for a more serious technical problem.
