Meditations Upon Chun-Li
Posted by Owen Good at 10:00 AM on April 27, 2008
Destructoid dares to ask the question: "Is Chun-Li a post-op transsexual?" Hard hitting and thought provoking, to be sure, but, you know. Meh. Her hands are big? yarly.
But it's as good a jumpoff for me to reminisce about the intersection of Street Fighter, my fraternity in college, and a case study in cognitive dissonance.
This happened back at N.C. State, where I was a member of Tau Kappa Epsilon's Beta-Beta chapter. Names have been changed to protect the ashamed, but the frat nicknames are, I swear to God, real. Here goes.
Around 1993, everyone was playing one of two games on their Genesises or Super Nintendoes — Street Fighter or a college football ripoff game that called us "STATE OF NORTH CAROLINA" to skirt NCAA licensing rules. But I digress. Everyone knew Street Fighter is the point, and everyone got their asses handed to them by Evil E, Ton O' Fun, Big Al, or Strap-On, almost always playing Chun-Li or Ken.
My roommate, Queef, and I lived next door on the front hall to a brother, Guy, who was about as shady as they come. Like a few years later, the State Bureau of Investigation was looking into the fact he and some others signed up for free Columbia House CDs under a dog's name, and some other identity shit. In fact, one night we heard a "business partner" stop by and threaten Guy within an inch of his life over, I guess, money that was owed. So Guy had a rep for moving with unclean company, that's important.
One day, and I forget how this unfolded, but Guy's roommate, Cooter, dragged me and Queef into their room to play their answering machine. Cooter got home from class before Guy, hit play, and heard a startling threat from, apparently, a Korean gangster. There was a demand for money, an ultimatum of bodily harm, and a meeting place and time: "[REDACTED] THIS IS ... CHUN LI ... YOU MEET ME ... ELEVEN THIRTY AT ... HOUSE O' PANCAKES ...!"
It was an utterly ridiculous, cartooned, even racist voice, but at the time, none of us had ever lived outside North Carolina. So we fucking fell for it. Cooter and I actually drove out to the IHOP on Hillsborough Street to stake out the encounter, following our chapter rule: "The object is not to fuck your brother, but to get your brother fucked."
Even though intercourse was not on the menu of options, we figured allowing Guy to be murdered by a Korean gangster out to collect a bad debt fell into guilty knowledge or passive allowance of fucking over a brother.
So away we went. We even bought 12-inch sandwiches from Sadlack's Heroes to gnaw on while we waited in the car, the two biggest shithead cops on a two-hour stakeout ever. And neither Guy nor any Korean mafiosi showed up.
And when we got back, Ray White Trash and Grape Ape copped to leaving the prank message.
Evil E said, "I knew it was fake. The Korean language does not produce words that sound anything like Chun Li. That's specifically Chinese."
Gee thanks, asshole.
For the record, my fraternity nickname was Fellatiowen.

"Builds character", feh. Bad character, maybe. Exhibit 1: Guy.
Maybe Chun-Li's just had too many steroids. Like the East German women's athletes used to be, back in the day. Look at some Olympics pix from the 70's and you'll see scary things.

Who fucking cares what Chun Li is?
Here we have an artists interpretation of this SF character for the next iteration of the game, and people are going ape shit over it and speculating over things that really does nothing that changes the way the game fundamentally plays. Does it really matter? Different artists will take the look of a particular character and go different directions with them at different points in time during that artists' reign. Get over it. Move on. Discuss art direction. Discuss artistic style. But discussing character story background that may have/will never exist - and again doesn't alter the game-play mechanics, is pretty pointless and starts to dredge up topics and roads we here on Kotaku really don't need to travel. Keep this up and I'm willing to bet that sooner or later we'll have all sorts of derogatory comments from trolls who want to bash those who live an alternative lifestyle or are transgendered - on a gaming website.

That story sounds like it could be some kind of weird/sick Street Fighter fan fiction.
"Chun-li, transsexual, starts a career with the Korean mafia, and heads to North Carolina to take out two of the Mafia's biggest enemies; Fellatiowen and Cooter."
Infact, I think that might not be fan fiction, but it may just be the plot to the Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li.

I've always thought the whole trans-gender for posion thing was silly.
I mean we know the story... nintendo was really up tight about morals and stuff at the time so to get around the whole "heroes shouldn't hit women" deal they called her a post-op/transvestite ect.... they just CALLED her that. It is quite clear that they never intended her to be anything other than a girl. And of course those wacky asians have a sick sense of humor so once this info leaked to the general public they ran with it. The poor thing is a girl, get over it.
I mean hell, the EXACT same thing happened to Birdo, whom I'll remind you was released at about the same time. US smb2 was a cheap hack of a more obscure japaneese game, a game that was geared towards older kids. Well kid friendly mario couldn't be caught beating up women and the devs were far too lazy to just fix the sprite, so they just said she was a he to get around it. Birdo is a girl though... you can't simply change the sexual identity of a character just to get around legal loopholes.
My point is, designing a transsexual/transvestite character from the start and desperately saying they are at the last minute are two totally different things.
There are plenty of questionable characters on newer fighting games coming out of japan in particular, but leave poison and birdo out of it... them are gals, like it or not.
Adding to the story, I'll remind you about a certain Van Damme flick (no, NOT street fighter) in which the main villian is a very large chineese man named chun-li. I'm fairly culturally inept when it comes to the far east, but going by that film either the dude had a girl's name or chun-li is also a boy's name.

LOL i like how the biggest flaw of SF4 is the art and models themselves but no one cares enough to notice until their favorite Chinese wank material suddenly looks like a tranny.
And even then this is biggest an article on SF4's art direction is going to get.
I would seriously demand that Capcom remodel Chun-Li, as well as redo all those horrible character portrait illustrations.
Chun-li's always had big hands, but a good artist would make it so that as a whole, she looked entirely feminine and yet strong. This subtlety is entirely lost now.
The only true Ikeno work I've seen from this game is the character selection screen, which looks years better than anything "official." That is to say, it looks like your typically good Capcom art. Not this meaty, bulky crap.

I think you must have a serious fetish for this kind of thing if you see that in Chun Li.
Considering how small and petite she is in Street Fighter Alpha and then after many years of training and battles she becomes a full warrior for Street Fighter 3 and 4.
But to skip the Chun Li of Alpha or SF2 then you already have trannies on the brain and probably have many files on you computer that prove it.
Whatever floats your boat.

I'm not saying the misogyny was blatant, I'm just saying it was there, and people should be more mindful of that.

Exactly. Thats why you should be even more aware of what you post. If a word you post on the net may be offensive, you should avoid it if possible - unless you're from an uneducated lot.
This post has degenerated the discussion into a one about a derogatory subject - just as I had thought it would.

Well, I don't believe that a group of people from one place should restrict the use of language for everyone because they take the worst meaning for a word, use it out of context, and then apply it to a situation which is clearly not intended. Some might even call such action uneducated, but I would also chalk it up to arrogance.
In language, just as in anything, context matters. By slavishly banning a word with multiple meanings (a majority of which are ok) because you've mistakenly labeled it as misogynist (despite the fact that other "acceptable" words are equally so) is just plain wrong. To call someone out for it on a message board, and then to hijack an otherwise interesting thread just so you can justify your myopic opinion is selfish and unproductive.
It appears that despite the simplicity of this concept, you and Pear refuse to even acknowledge another way of thinking, despite my ability to understand yours. While I generally agree that one should moderate one's use of language to conform to the norms of where they speak (as your argument insultingly indicates), I don't believe either that my language has breached the norm (even if used in the worst way) nor that the idea/language I introduced was in need of moderation.
Rather than flail at me on this hijacked topic, why not send me messages privately if you continue to disagree and we can continue are discussion that way?

@Syre:
While I was being slightly facetious, yes, there is something wrong with the word "frat". It is generally used in a derogatory manner to belittle people who are in fraternities. It conjures images of meatheads hazing freshmen, objectifying women, and doing very poorly in school.
At my college, fraternities were more serious than at many places and we used language that indicated this. Therefore, you'd never call your fraternity a "frat", and when people make stereotypically ignorant comments, like on this thread, I like to remind people that you should judge people on an individual basis, not because of affilliation, gender, race, or otherwise.
I actually don't object to the use of the word "frat" in many circumstances, just in the way I mentioned above.

As the aforementione "Ton O'Fun" is have to say this sounds plausible. One fact needs to be correct, though.
I played Street Fighter exactly one time. The best player in the house was Evil E, and he caught me walking into my room and asked me to play him. Barely knowing which button did what, I beat him and he promptly demanded a rematch.
I put down the controller and declared "I'm never playing this game again, because I am now 1-0 vs. Evil E." And I haven't played it since.
I swear our house's address must have been like a rash on Columbia House's computer.
