Microsoft To Rip Off Wii Remote By End Of Year, Says Source
Posted by Michael McWhertor at 7:40 AM on April 8, 2008
The Xbox 360 may be getting its own take on the Wii remote later this year, reports MTV News, with Microsoft said to have been knee deep in "X-remote" development since Summer of 2007. MTV cites an anonymous developer who alleges that a motion-sensitive controller is being developed alongside a Mii-like avatar system with the input of developer Rare, who is said to be late on delivering a "unified interface and look for the controller."
The unnamed source provided MTV with a sketch, which our hasty mock up to the left is based on and explains the copious amount of holes.
If true, it reminds us of that other Rare project said to be in the works, the Xbox Live Arcade title with Vision cam support.
You may remember the rumour regarding Rare's The Fast and the Furriest based on internal docs delivered to Xbox 360 Fanboy. Those plans indicated that Rare was hard at work on a "wand type" interface with motion control and a furry outfit avatar system. Yes, it does sound like the stuff of nightmares.
Speaking of nightmares, MTV's source calls the project "a colossal clusterf***" which should certainly inspire confidence. There's even talk of waggle-formed games for the hardcore.
The best part? Rumoured marketing materials that illustrate "how easy it would be for third parties to port their Wii games to the 360." We're not making this up!
Even more details on the exasperating copycatting await you at the original MTV News report. Consider it rumour for now, but given the extensive talk about Microsoft looking to shoehorn in Wii-like features, don't be surprised if such a thing pops up at the company's E3 press conference.

Reading these comments I take it very few actually saw the sketch in the MTV newspost that looks like someone realized they forgot to do an April Fools prank and spent a few seconds in MS Paint.

I love how people say MS are "ripping off" the idea of a motion sensing controller when it was Microsoft themselves who had a working motion sensing game controller way back in... the year 2000 I think it was.
Funnily enough, there just wasn't the demand for it at the time so it went by the wayside. All Nintendo have done is take that idea and launched it at the right time. Bit harsh to say MS are copycats seeing as they were the first to bring a motion sensing game technology to the mass market, albeit on the PC where it was probably destined to fail!
Someone who isn't as lazy as I am will find out what it was called and post a link I'm sure!

Hahaha, so lame. I hope this is a late April Fool's joke. The 360 is clearly a hardcore machine and I don't think anyone wants to see it flooded with gimmicky remote sensor games. With the 360 already three years into it's lifecycle does producing a peripheral like this even make sense at this point? Microsoft would be better off waiting until 2010 and release the Xbox 720 bundled with an X-remote.

Oh please with the "stealing/rip off/imitating" comments.
Like both Nintendo and Sony didn't steal inspiration and elements from Xbox Live? If anything, don't most f us agree that Nintendo SHOULD steal more from Xbox Live so that online play isn't broken or difficult?
They ALL "borrow" ideas and implement them in various ways. That's true of every industry ever invented. To think that gaming is any different than cars or banking or coffeeshops or anything else is so comical. It's a copycat world.
Get over it.

@Tons Of Fun:
You are an idiot, sir. If this turns out to be true, it will end up thrown to the wayside like pretty much everything else of its type. Rare will release some sub par game with it, it won't sell but 6 units, and then no one else will make games for it. The "core" gamer market has made it quite clear that they have no interest whatsoever in a controller of this type, so I can guarantee you right now that you won't be seeing any incredible, mind blowing games for it that you would enjoy (i.e. no hooker killing or headshots).
This is aimed at people as an extra expensive peripheral to an already expensive console and all it offers is things that the people that it is aimed at don't give half a damn about. Has "FAIL" written all over it.

...this is possible, but doubtful. For one, it'd probably only be with Rare games and not all games (if it came out this year). For two, it'd probably be in development for the next console, not the current console. For three, MS is trying too hard when there hasn't even been enough time for something extraordinary to use the motion controls yet...it's just a new way to play, and it's interesting but nonetheless not the only way.
Of course, Microsoft just wants the money so...

The XBOX Parasite comes with a DVD which loads a specialized Parasite control into the Wii program space and allows (well, forces) the Wii to act as a peripheral to the 360. @Cruithne: Yes, it's business. It's definitely Microsoft's business: they can't seem to come up an original idea (at least, these days) from which to profit.
Granted, lots of companies do the same. As for the Ford/cars example, that's a bit different. Microsoft seems to really like to focus on swiping other companies' gimmicks, which seems particularly odd to me. Wii-motes and Miis? They couldn't come up with that themselves?
Another of my favorites is the blatant rip-off of Widgets in Vista, called "Gadgets." Real original, guys. What makes me laugh, though, is that ripping off Dashboard and Widgets seems so...pointless. Borrowing from core concept, functionality and usability and innovating and evolving is one thing (this is where the "car" analogy works). But blatantly ripping off a completely non-essential feature? Why? This probably isn't a proper analogy to the theft-of-concept of Wii-mote (as the Wii-mote IS a central selling point of the Wii), but it's an anecdote I find humorous nonetheless.

Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. Thus, if this is true, than it says a lot about what Microsoft really thinks of the WiiMote.
That being said, even throwing aside marketing, I see a key problem, adaptation. In other words, why should 360 developers take advantage of this controller when only a small fraction of the 360 owners have one? So unless Microsoft can tackle adaptation and give developers incentive to make games for the controller, it may be the industries next, Game Cube Gamboy Link Cable.
Microsoft can however, do a few things to push adaptation. The first would be to bundle the controller in every new X-box 360 alongside the standard controller.
The second would be to put out a, "killer ap," with the controller bundled with it. Doesn't even need to be THAT great of a game, WiiPlay has pretty much proven this.
Finally, Microsoft can keep costs down. If they sell the wand controllers for $30 dollars a piece, the same price at the WiiMote, than they'll look cheap in comparison to Microsoft's $50 dollar standard controllers.
All this being said though, I'm somewhat dubious.
We're into the third year of the X-box 360 lifespan by now, in another two to three years Microsoft will be announcing the successor to the console. So I think I may be a little late in the game for Microsoft to radically shift it's focus like this.
My suggestion to Microsoft, would be to continue refining the controller, make it as responsive and accurate as they possibly can. Then when they're done with that, start looking into other features they can add to it as well.
If they do that long enough, than they can simply use THAT design for the 360's successor, and have themselves an uber-controller that's really hard to beat.

And for anyone feeling like putting Sony in the same basket. Don't be stupid. Motion sensing is becoming a standard in console gaming, just like rumble was before, and just like cams are becoming now. Nintendo uses it in casual gaming, and bases the entire game off of it. Sony used it in more "hardcore games," like Resistance, Uncharted and in racing games. In shooters and action games it's just used for one function, not the whole thing. MS is ripping Nintendo off not by using motion sensing (their controller is clearly the last one in terms of innovation and feature this gen) but by THE WAY they apply it. This is clearly a "port" of the Wii-mote to the 360. Even the name is a rip-off (remove Wii, put X... wtf?). Sony never went that far, and at least they jumped at the same time as Nintendo instead of that "wait and see" approach that MS always uses. I just hope this fails, just like their other knock offs have always failed.

Seriously. Just give me a third analogue stick instead of a dpad. That would really make people angry. But the dpad is useless on a 360 controller anyways so /shrug. PS people could play on a 360 controller even easier, and I think some hardcore mech games could use 3 sticks. Gotta innovate something new on a controller to separate casuals from hardcore anyways. People can then say "you noob casuals, you cant even handle 3 sticks"
Thats the world I want to live in. It's sad cause I started off sarcastic but now when I think of the uselessness of the 360 dpad it doesnt sound THAT terrible.

Eew. Looks ugly. If it ever makes it to market, I won't be buying it, since I'm not 8. What a bizarre move for Microsoft, too. I thought they knew their core demographic much better than to attempt this.
Besides, wasn't the industry on the cusp of admitting that waggling a controller while looking at SNES-era graphics is nothing more than a passing (albeit lucrative) fad?
Prediction: this'll come out way too late for the cash-in bonanza that the Wii enjoyed, Microsoft and Nintendo will start a non-consequential court fight and it will all drift away into nothingness that no one will remember in no time flat.
While it's strange for Microsoft to do this (if in fact they are), I still think their console's the best of the bunch this generation.

I don't see the point in this. Microsoft has a pretty good market share this generation. If they release this "X-remote", they are basically going after potential Wii consumers. To even attempt to make this thing successful MS has to commit a lot of resources to this project which might mean less resources spent on what has made the Xbox360 what it is today.
Look at the PS3. It has the sixaxis functionality, but I doubt that is the reason anyone purchased one.

Ampillion, now with the hair stylings of TVs Frank
Posted 7:11 AM 8/4/08
Nope. This will fail rather hard. Or, rather, end up as just some peripheral.
Again, the reason why it works for Nintendo is, from day one, the system was built with the motion sensing and controller shape. The two are synonymous. Therefore every game can support it knowing that people can access the pointer features, the motion controls, whatever. The Wii also has this 'fun for the whole family' name for it, which the 360 will never be able to pull away from it. Microsoft should just refine what they've got now: The core gamer market. They're making killer software numbers, so unless this is just a mere 'trying to cash in on imitation' and not a real drive to make 360 more like the Wii, this would be a rather large fail.
If MS had some brains, they'd be holding this thing for their next system iteration, refine the technology a bit, and then offer up both standard and remote-style controllers base on the next system, and spend less money on upgraded hardware inside. Aka, be the next gen's Wii.

Time for a theoretical fanboy nightmare scenario:
- Microsoft releases remote like motion control add-on for the 360.
- Xbox Live becomes swarmed with motion control games, some of which are actually really good.
- Developers pick up on the device and actually begin making good games that use the remote.
- The Wii gets left in the dust with thousands of "casual" games and shovelware, becomes the ugly duckling.
This is the kind of thinking that's keeping me from buying a Wii. I still think the whole idea is rubbish and a fad.

@VillageOoOIdiot: No it won't help. The Buzz knock off didn't. Bringing JRPGs didn't. And bringing this in the year of MGS4 is not a very wise decision of MS. The 360 is a hardcore console, they need to advise it as such, and leave the rest to Nintendo. They should focus more on GTA4 and GoW2 if they want to push consoles.

Given the six-axis controls, It's not beyond anyone that they would try a stunt like this.

Yeah, a game using the vision camera, one of about 20 eyetoy ripoffs out there right now... Still amazed at the fact people are so desperate to rip-off a commercial failure (eyetoy)
Why? Because they know it was simply the wrong time for it... They eyetoy style gameplay will be popular someday, when better webcams are available for the same price... Just like motion controls have been around for a lot longer than the Wii, but the Wii entered it at the right time.
Oh, and rare is a company deserving of no praise... Whatsoever... Ever again...

I can just imagine Banjo standing there going "uhuh, we only need another 385 bones to make the skeleton!"
One or two games with this thing isn't going to make it worthwhile, apart from the patent issues if they use the same system as Nintendo's you do have to wonder how expensive the basic setup for it would be.

I'm a pretty solid 360 guy who has no interest in the Wii. Fun to play at a party with friends but don't want one myself. And I don't see the problem here with one caveat: as long as they still make the types of games they are making now, then cool. If the Wii-ish games are additional and not the core game, then awesome. Why not? To me MS (and Sony) would be stupid not to jump on this.
And don't think for a moment that Sony isn't developing a Wii-like controller as well. Sony has always taken the best ideas of others and tried to rebrand them.

I think this would be VERY smart move on Microsoft's part. Think about how much more they will sell if they do this right! So many casual gamers would be brought to the Xbox 360 b/c not only can they easily play any games they want (I'm talking about people who aren't necessarily "gamers", like my mother), but it might get them more interested in learning how to use the other controller and start playing other games that do not involve a point and click method. What a great introductory tool this could be for anyone intimidated by the hardcore-ness of gamers. So it will be good for everyone, really....well, scratch that, it won't be too good for Nintendo, if Microsoft does this right.
How can they do it right? I wrote about my opinion in my blog. [gmunster.wordpress.com]

While I'm not in support of BLATANT COPYING, I am of the belief that games with new controllers and interfaces CAN be highly successful. Thus a system (Wii) need not be built exclusively around such controls.
The ridiculous success of the Guitar Hero series, Rock Band and Wii Play should make it clear that, if the accompanying games are fun and offer new experiences, then people will buy in droves even with the expensive price that comes with adding a unique controller.

My god... people talk about ripoffs, but really... The only company that doesn't do ripoffs is Nintendo.
Let's remember
Nintendo came up with the SNES controller... sony copied... for the Playstation, only with two more shoulder buttons.
Nintendo thought about an analog stick... Sony thought wtf, let's make it two!
Nintendo came up with the rumble pack... Sony, again, made it two... (they were internal... but anyway
Later, sega copied those ideas, then microsoft too...

If the copies made of nintendo's ideas are actually working, let them keep copying.

Assuming this is legit (which it likely isn't) - the sketch on the MTV page says the 360mote has four colored LEDs at the top where the wiimote has its IR beam.
What does that mean?
Are those merely colored lights to signify which player I am controlling? Or is it some new kind of four-way optical sensor?
I'm confused. If Microsoft can do motion control better than the Wii, I am all for it. If they can't, they should step aside.

M$ and $ony have been trying to add to the immersion in their game since the Wii was revealed.
The only thing they're missing is that the GAMES have to support it and be fun and interesting. You can't just throw out motion control and expect people to jump on it because it's "kinda like the Wii" you need to give them the equivalent of Wii Sports or something better along with that.
And all this is going on on the eve of Wii Fit aka the balance board, Nintendo is already a step ahead.
We all know Wii Fit is going to sell like stock ammo at a gun convetion. I mean my girlfriend who doesn't even PLAY video games, wants it and she just heard about it. Wait until that tv marketing campaign drops.
It's funny, though nintendo will barely market their games but I bet Wii Fit commercials will be EVERYWHERE.

Color me... enthused! Rare made their way in the 90s trying everything they could to out-do Nintendo on their own consoles. And what time, nostalgia, and Nintendo's shilling of their franchises has made many forget is that they did a pretty damn good job of it. Banjo-Kazooie was a better game than Mario 64. Diddy Kong Racing was a better game than Mario Kart 64. And before anyone decries that, keep in mind that the magazines and reviewers at the time were saying these things.
So here's hoping Rare does that again, makes Nintendo hungry to hang onto its market share, and the gamers get higher-quality games. Competition is good.

Perhaps if they could take motion sensing capabilities and put them into some sort of glove you could wear...

Oh, for fuck's sake, if I wanted a Wii I'd buy one. Please, please don't let my console get infested with fucking Mii's.

@Phantommizzi: We don't need it but Microsoft do. The casual market will see a cheap 360 with waggle and eat it up.

Doesn't the 360 have a controller already, and doesn't it work fine? What have I been playing with? Also, if you want to play with a Wiimote, wouldn't you just buy a Wii?

This is my worst fear! Last thing I want is video games to turn out just like the wii! Its fun for some games, but not for all. What next, the playstation sixaxis remote? then next thing we know all three next gen systems have this. It has to stop somewhere!

Ugh, please don't muck up my 360 with a flood of shitty waggle games. We have enough shitty games as it is.

If Rare actually complies with this bullshitery then I'm going to be extremely disappointed in them. Hopefully none of this is true.
