On Bill Murray, And Ghostbusters Dialogue
Posted by Luke Plunkett at 12:20 PM on April 29, 2008
Best part of the new Ghostbusters game has got to be the fact the title will feature the voices of the movie cast. But...are they actually going to record new dialogue? Or is the game just going to use canned soundbytes from the two movies? Good news, kids: it's the former. Bill Murray's due to hit the studio next week to record all-new lines for the game. It's a mystery as to how the game's producer, Joel Mechner, managed to first find then get the reclusive Murray to sit down to work on a videogame, but who cares. He did, we all win. Let's now hope Ernie Hudson's an easier man to track down.

I met Ernie Hudson about two weeks ago at ICON on Long Island and he said that he is in the game and he is recording his voice. He made it seem like he already did it though. I guess he is already done.

Murray's been doing some work off and on for the past few years, just nothing major. Voice acting, like in Garfield, is probably just easier on him and allows him a lot more free time to be with his kids.
He's in the new Get Smart movie (playing Agent 13, so we may never see him in person, haha) and he's the mayor in the upcoming City of Ember. Then he's supposed to be in another Jarmusch film next year as well.
I don't know, I think it's pretty cool that he can just take things at his own pace nowadays. I'd love to see him more but I wouldn't want him to just be working himself to death and not enjoying what he does.

I hope there is sort of costume change and you can unlock the older "hipper" versions of the actors. Bearded-sad-cool Murray would be awesome.

I don't own a console. I've never owned a console. It wasn't because I had anything against them, I just didn't have a ton of money or time to play on one. In a few months, I'll be in a new job, with a significant pay increase and I think I may get myself one of those boxes. I'll probably get Ghostbusters too. I loved that movie.

Harold Ramis and Dan Aykroyd are writing it so it will be as funny as the movies. It supposed to take the place of a 3rd movie.

It's been hard being a Ghostbusters fan the past decade. Not only have we been subjected to damn near every other 80's franchise being revisited and resurrected, possibly even better than its original counterpart in some cases, we had to deal with a substitute sitcom that seemingly pushed kids away from the start (although I was a big fan).
Give or take a couple of memorabilia action figures, some DVD re-releases, and a short lived comic series, being a Ghostbusters fan sure has been rough.
So I beg of Sierra... please please PLEASE don't screw this game up. I'll even take a Metareview score of 7.5!!!

@LunchBox55: He quit acting because his wife died of cancer and he wanted to be there to raise his kids with the money he already made as opposed to going off to be a movie star and having some kidsitter watch them. He put parenting before acting, that's an honorable thing you never see in Hollywood.

As recall, for GBII. The producers and rest of the cast had a lot of problems getting Murray on board. He hates sequels. He's been quoted as saying "Sequels are just a waste of time. You're retreading the same ground." But eventually with a lot of money they convinced him, but I think he sees voice acting differently. It's less work time, not to mention easier and you still get lots a money. He did do the Garfield sequel as you recall. So it's not that surprising he'd do this Ghostbusters game.

Ok, clearly Kotaku is of the poser GB fan variety. Since it seems that Murray being in this is a new revelation, clearly you Kotakuites need to take a break from fapping off to Niko for a few minutes and suck down a little HISTORY OF GHOSTBUSTERS 3.
A long ass time ago (well, pretty close to the year 1991 in which the game is set) Dan Aykroyd wrote a script he would always refer to as "Ghost Busters Go to Hell". It was about as massive an idea as the original script for GB1 was, and thusly doomed to never happen as well. The long drawn out explanation had a lot to do with the Ghost Busters finding out hell is "the empty space between each frame of film" which in Aykroyd speech means it coexists with reality, and thusly hell in GB3 would be an alternate New York. Or more appropriately, shit happens, someone has to deal with it, and who you gonna call?
Apparently it featured a lot of nifty effects which probably slowed it down back when it still had a chance, but it didn't help that GB2 changes made by the studio pissed of Reitman and Ramis, and Murray lost all interest in everything and everyone. For years Dan would talk about it, but no matter how many nifty suggestions (Ramis suggesting Ben Stiller become a new Ghost Buster) or technological improvements (using CGI elements instead of the old, superior practical effects) it would simply never come to be.
Then one day after it seems GB3 is dead and would suck anyway without Murray, Aykroyd throws a curve ball and say Murray would not do live action, but would lend his voice were it to be a CGI movie. Clearly Murray had a problem with his wrinkles, but fortunately for us all he agreed to help "Ghost Busters Go to Hell" finally be told on screen. The day was saved, the justice of our culture was proven, and everyone smiled.
Except for the fact a CGI Ghost Busters movie is the dumbest idea ever. Fortunately, Aykroyd noticed this and found a way to turn Murray's whining into something positive by diverting his voice talents from a CGI movie to a video game. When the game was first announced in whichever dumb magazine that was, he let it be known that the Ghost Busters were finally going to hell and that GB3 was officially a video game.
So next time you think how awesome it is to have the Ghost Busters back together again, don't credit some no name game designers who you suppose somehow had the power to pull in MURRAY of all people. The only reason this game is happening is because Dan Aykroyd is awesome and never once gave up on the franchise. Dan Aykroyd worked his ass off for all of us to get what we've been dreaming of since we were children, and chances are that because of it the final product is going to be infinitely more hardcore than any studio would have let the movie be. The return of STAY PUFT? DEAD CONSTRUCTION WORKERS?
Now you know who to call.

Ahem...having Bill Murray do some voice acting in a game is a wonderful thing, just as long as it's quality dialogue, and not phoned in or done in one take like Christopher Walken in True Crime.

@Mongoosekun:
Actually, if you listen to the director commentary on the DVD for the first film, you'll find that the role of Peter Venkman was originally written with John Belushi in mind to play the role. Akroyd started on the script for GB after they had worked together on The Blues Brothers and wanted to work with him again. After John's untimely demise, they recast the role for Bill Murray, another ex-SNL co-star. Personally, I think Bill was a better fit for the role anyway. Watching Bluto busting ghosts would be... Odd. On set, they often joked about Slimer being the ghost of John Belushi.
Now you know the rest of the story...
