Saints Row 2 Release Date Announced
Posted by Flynn De Marco at 2:00 AM on April 5, 2008
The big news out of yesterday's THQ Gamer's Day was the announcement of a street date for Saint's Row 2. The follow up to the uber popular first title will be hitting your PS3 or Xbox 360 on August 26th. As expected, it's been packed with a bunch of new features that will enrich your gang related gaming experience. Look for more details from my hands on with the game later today! You can also check out the Saints Row 2 website which just went live.

Eh, with GTA coming, really no interest in this. The first was ok, but with GTA out, don't see much point unless this is drastically better.

@ErskinPig:
that's what a lot of the regs on the 2k forums said. I remember the first time I played morrowind, I hated it. I made a horrible character, no idea what I was doing, and ended up getting killed by guards over and over. I then put it away, picked it back up a month later, and fell in love with it.
Sometimes games need second chances.

@Lot Krotan: STALKER has its flaws, but the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. It's a truely remarkable game. You might face a bit of inertia getting into it, but once you do get it, you'll be glad you decided to install it. Fairly meaty game too, I clocked up 40ish hours on the SP campaign.
Great game.

Sorry for the re-post, but I want to add that the replay value is much greater than GTAIV. Why, well its very simple, the fact that you can customize basically anything even that main character. SR@ vs GTA IV gameplay & re-play value.

@ErskinPig:
Forgot all about that. I still haven't installed my copy of STALKER...
I wonder when Fable 2 will be out, it's in the polishing parts of the game now.
All the haters of Saint's Row probably didn't play the first.
Voice Acting was great, side missions were interesting, story was a tad better than other games in the genre (crackdown), driving was better, and it kept a distinct, albeit a little borrowed, sense of humor that didn't get too whacky or too serious.
Basically, co-op campaign is enough to make me rebuy the game, everything else they've added is just extra imo.

Why play Saints Row 2 when there is GTA IV? I'm only half serious but I'm not so sure I'll be ready for another Open World Crime simulator when this comes out.

As a GTA clone you have to give them credit for the first one. Who knows?, maybe they'll even add their own touch to make it more distinctive.
It takes balls of brass to go up against something like GTA, kudos to them for doing it.

@Lot Krotan: STALKER Clear Sky is out then too. Good times.
Last year was a disgrace up until Bioshock's release. Then the floodgates opened and loads of must-have games were released. Fucking pisses me off actually, this targeting Christmas business. Release your game when it's finished, stop holding it back!

I wasn't a big fan of the first but will definitely give this one a rent at least when it comes out. I just don't wanna have to drive hos around to advance the main story, i'll do that later when I'm doing side missions. Is the respect system going to be the same? Having to do errands to unlock main missions?

@acez2087: yeah. you see if just one of those games (like gtaIV or mgs4) gets pushed back we would have a gaming void! it's like last year when both of them were pushed back, i was left with a ps3 with very few games (i don't buy that much games.) thankfully there was assassin's creed (c'mon start the hate now!) and i got to play it till february.
i thought they were going to stand toe to toe with GTAIV on this one? why is the release date on august?

you go to the features page on the SR2 website and its just a list of things that either are already in GTA IV or were in the original version of the game, customisation is all good but they knew when they started this game that GTA was gonna be coming out around the same time. They really need some kind of ground breaking feature to even take a shot at capturing peoples interest in the wake of the GTA release and I just dont see it....

I couldn't play the first one, the framerate was extremely uneven on my 360, so I got motion sickness from trying to drive in a straight line. If they fix that, I'm all up for a second chance...
...but allow me to express some scepticism over the fact that they have a set release date 4 months away, but basically no media out besides a handful of undersized screenshots. Not a great way to build up hype.

Mercs 2 should of came out in june, it would give everyone time to play through each game. Late august is a bad time to release a game as it is, school begins on Sep 2nd for me. Saint's Row really wasn't that long of a game either, but it was pretty fun.
I hope there's some more songs from Aisha. DFM me like your wife was good.

I can just see both publishers for Saints row and Mercenaries 2 debating when best to release their games so as not have to compete with the other open world game Gta4.
I mean surely this is going to hurt both games sales. I would imagine there is a quite fair overlap between people that want SR2 and people that want Mercs2. How many people are going to buy 2 massive open world games in the same week?

"As a GTA clone you have to give them credit for the first one."
Why ? The developers basically stole the entire game, and didn't add anything of their own to it.
I refuse to support such a blatent rip-off of a blockbuster title.
Sure it's not a bad game, because it just photocopied every aspect of the GTA series. When your blueprint is a multi-million selling series, it's hard to screw up.

I really enjoyed the original. Sure, it's a total clone hack, but it was really good fun. The graphics were pretty colorful (unlike last-gen clone fluff like True Crime) and the satirical ads were even funnier (to me, at least) than the stuff in GTA-- I mean, freckle bitches? That STILL makes me laugh. The title's minigames were good, the car and character customisation were pretty elaborate (if purely cosmetic), and the writing and voice acting were really solid-- all that stuff worked together to make Saint's Row one of this generation's surprise pleasures for me. I'm expecting good things from the sequel.

In SR2, I'm going to make my fat purple jumpsuit guy from SR1. He runs around eating cheeseburgers and showing random pedestrians the bad end of a baseball bat. What a great way to spend the afternoon in front of the Xbox. O and Where is Alan Wake?

Saint's Row has done something that everyone in that's remotely interested in GTA should be thankful for. They forced Rockstar to step up their game. SR beat them to the punch in online Multiplayer, Next Gen Graphics, improved targeting and much much more. If it wasn't for SR, GTA IV could've been a helluva lot less drastic change than we see now.
Why is it that you elitist fanboy gamers allow so many FPS games to flourish, yet you believe there can only be one Urban Sandbox game?
NEWSFLASH: That is how progress is made! Throughout history, we've been taking the ideas of others and adding our own little tweaks.
I'm tired of defending Saint's Row each and every time there's a post here about it. If you want to blindly hate the game because you read a few reviews about it and keep coining that old "it trys so hard to be gangster" routine, then fine, I obviously can't change your mind.
However, if you have a few dollars and a few hours to spare, I strongly suggest you rent/buy the game and give it a play through, even if for no other reason than to get a taste of whats to come from Volition and Rockstar this year.

@Grumps: It's called Quality Assurance in video games, not quality control.
@jynxycat: I found that Saints Row was actually way more adult than GTA, and actually did away with many of the annoying aspects of GTA (not being able to restart a failed mission immediately, precision aiming, all guns unlocked at the start, and many more.

Uh-huh. Then you must not play many games at all, since ripoffs abound throughout the industry.
Even if all they did was have a better targeting system and allow character creation (which is most certainly NOT all they did) Saint's Row would have been a worthy purchase. SR2 is easily a day 1-er for me.

I got bored of Saints Row. It was still a good game, considering they did the old CTRL+C -> CTRL+V job of it from GTA, but it suffered from a typical poor story and such. The game just did not seem to grab me at all and overall they could have really made the game alot better. It did offer some nice mechanics that Rockstar themselves seem to have snatched and CTRL+V'd into GTA IV, e.g using your mobile phone to call a police car or ambulance and stealing it.

Too soon if you ask me. GTA IV will have some serious legs, so Saints Row 2 needs to come at least 6 months later.
I liked Saints Row a lot, but GTA is king and I doubt that I will be ready for a GTA clone 4 months after GTA IV.
I say they should push it back to October or November. I bet it get's delayed anyway so it will probably hit closer to October that August IMHO.

@jynxycat: I don't know, man. I didn't say the character customisation was a game-changing thing (in fact, I stated it was purely cosmetic) but it was definitely a good time-- and the fact that you could have 'plastic surgery' whenever you could afford it gave you more chances to play the game exactly how you wanted to, which definitely made it more enjoyable for me. And I thought the writing was good, and made me feel like I was part of a living world-- michael rappaport's character and mila kunis' ultra diva character especially. You're welcome to your opinion, and I'm not saying GTA won't be great.

@Jmontilla2786: Actually I read in a 13 page interview with Sam Houser, that it basically adds side missions or an extra mission story arc or something. He only briefly touched upon it, but the upshot was that you're walking along and some guy stops you and says 'Look, there's a guy in that apartment up there who is fucking my wife....' etc. Sounds quite interesting and he did say that in the future the game will expand and grow through many DLC's. It's a shame I have been fucked over like this, like many PS3 owners. Hurray for 'exclusive content'... :(
