Smash Bros. Gets Official European Release Date
Posted by Luke Plunkett at 8:05 PM on April 24, 2008
Sing. And rejoice. For Europe, you long wait is over. Nintendo Europe have published their Q2 release schedule, and Super Smash Bros. Brawl is pencilled in for a June 27 launch. No, really. Also dated are the Everyone's Nintendo Channel (May 30), as well as the WiiWare service, which will launch - as (sorta) expected - on May 20. Oh, pick that mouth up off the floor. It had to come out eventually, didn't it?

So, we actually have to wait TWO MORE months for it?
By that time I'll be in the US, buying my friend's barely-used American Wii for cheap, and from that point on it's a big "screw you" to NoE as I import US games, getting them for much cheaper than they would've been here.

And I was one of the importers. Playing Chrono Trigger with a translation gleaned from a bbs... but I was too young to understand that the feedback of purchase is essential in determining future production. And too much bad feedback will remove the option entirely.

@CurlyJim:
Not defending NoE's crappy release schedule for an instant, but your Ace Attorney post is actually false.
Apollo Justice is set after the Phoenix Wright trilogy - correct.
The stories tie in - completely incorrect.
Without spoiling it for people who haven't had the chance to play AJ yet - there's no "tie in" with the plots of any of the PW games. There are a couple of characters, but no mention is ever made of any of the events of the previous games, and nothing of the PW games is in any way spoiled during AJ.
Anyway, AJ is not really a sequel. It's more like a spin-off as it's set in the same world. It's also got some totally sweet 3D cut scenes which show off the DS nicely.

@Makeda:
It's not like Nintendo suffer because people import. They get their cut in America too. So the only change apparently poor sales due to importing has is to misinform the developer about consumer interest, leading to even less Nintendo enthusiasm for releasing games in Europe, so more delays, so more imports...
Less "serves them right", more "thanks for all that extra rope to hang ourselves with"...
CurlyJim
CurlyJim
Posted 8:50 PM 24/4/08
@Makeda:
And thus the great cycle of Nintendo's European indifference continues. If it's bought in America, they get their cut anyway, so it's not like they suffer. It's the people who don't import, who get screwed because Nintendo decide it's not worth the effort to release stuff in Europe due to the apparent lack of interest.
So it's not so much "serves them right" as "thanks for giving us more rope to hang ourselves"...

I would have bought Brawl in March had it been released on that date. But I won't be buying it in June, and that's not because I want to boycott Nintendo.
Due to the amount of unlockable content in Melee (namely the trophies), I was encouraged to play the game much more often than I would have done normally. So instead of stretching out the game long enough so that there was room for enjoying Brawl, Melee killed the gameplay for me.
When I think about having to complete Classic Mode with 35 characters, on top of the 24 characters I won with in Melee, that's just too much. It's like asking someone to complete every Mario Kart Grand Prix with every character.
I did play an import copy at a friend's house and it was enjoyable. But the fan appeal wore off quickly and I don't want to put time into the game when there are others to enjoy.

But you'll be perfectly fine playing Apollo first. I'm trying to work out why someone would tell you that, but I'm coming up blank. Must have misunderstood or was yanking your chain.

Everyone that thinks SSBB will not sell in Europe is forgetting the UK sales charts that get posted weekly on Kotaku! Remember 9/10 of the top 10 being Wii games? Remember most of them being quite crap games?
It will sell like hotcakes, and hotcakes would be no.1 on the Uk sales charts if only they qualified as video games.

Now ... nope.
Mario Kart managed (near) simultaneous world-wide release, so why not all their big-name titles?
Also, since MKW is very much the same game as it's always been, updated for the new hardware (good thing), I have every reason to believe it'll be the same deal for SSBB (bad thing).

This announcement is really put into perspective with what is happening next week. A game by a third party developer with huge story and side story content is going to be release in all territories (except Japan) on the same day across two platforms.
But Nintendo cannot deliver the PAL version of a game that is not exactly story driven within 4 months of the initial release. Really is a sad state of affairs.

@lachinay: you do realize that by playing melee and comparing it to brawl, you just did the same thing as playing CoD4 and comparing it to Duckhunt, or anything that different.

Anyway, im going to laugh so hard if the PAL version of Brawl is actually good.
And i say that because of all the nerfings they made for melee that actually made the came pretty interesting (chaingrabbing being obliterated, fox being as light as kirby, etc.)
So who knows, maybe the euros will get the last laugh in this situation.

@Josh*: Indeed, I assumed they would be skippable, but it might be that in order to keep using the Freeloader a Wii owner would have to sacrifice being able to use WiiWare or the Nintendo channel. Seeing as how those two updates are the only things I'm looking forward to on Wii this year (Lost Winds on WiiWare, and DS demos in my home!), I know which I'd choose.
Sucks to be a Smash fan in Europe though. I was really hyped for the game until a friend imported it and I went "meh" and remembered I like Melee but only for about 10 minutes. Nintendo would have got a sale from me if I hadn't played it first!

Im a big fan of fighting games, 2d and 3d alike. I was skeptical about brawl when i first heard of it. I thought the same thing the average person over 18 thinks when they first see it. That this game is a gimicky fighting game for 13 year olds who dont take fighters seriously, and how deep can a fighting game be with 2 buttons. But i met some new gamer friends that played melee and i thought why not ill try it out. Besides the game has a very competetive fighting scene and brawl was just gonner be bigger, if not the most competetive fighting game out there(sadly i thought).
Anyways long story short i really got into it and as a fighter the game as very good dept. Its not really combo based but higher level play takes very good DI to be good. I have some quirks with it. For instance some characters are better than some at taking out others at higher play. Anyways what im tryin to say is i was really impressed with this game and id go so far as to say its one of the better fighting games out there quality and gameplay wise. I just hope i dont get disapointed with the new soul calibur and street fighter games coming out

That's the kind of crap that made me sell my Wii in the first place. I'm in Canada myself and Smash was delayed three times since it's original release date for us. And the Europeans have to wait even longer? Jeez. If you bought your console for just Smash... sell it like I did and get yourself a 360 - probably a better investment. :(
