Stormfront Studios Shuts Down (No Joke)
Posted by Michael McWhertor at 10:19 AM on April 2, 2008
The developers of the original Neverwinter Nights, The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers and Blood Wake has closed its doors, ending twenty years of Stormfront Studios. We'd heard from a number of ex-employees over the past 24 hours who tipped us off to the closing, telling us that Stormfront prez Don Daglow announced during the studio's weekly meeting that it would be shutting its doors forever, offering no severance and no further health benefits. The studio was said to have a staff of about 30 full-time employees at its closure.
According to Next-Gen report on the shuttering, Stormfront reps confirmed the rumour, saying that its current project "made no revenue." It's unclear whether that project was the recently shipped The Spiderwick Chronicles, but we have an e-mail in with Stormfront to learn more.

Stormfront Studios
I spot 3 decent games in that list... looks like the EA machine ate them up and spat them out.
Its the hard working employees who now get fuck all I feel sorry for. Lets hope some of them find work elsewhere.

They sure did pick a weird day to announce it.

Stormfront also made the old Tony LaRussa PC baseball games didn't they? I probably logged more hours with those games than with anything since, WoW included...

Used to love Bloodwake. Somewhat sad to see them go, but I guess thats what happens to companies that get crappy games pushed upon them. (*Spiderwick Chronicles*)

Lets be fair, stormfront made some good games. I loved Two Towers, it was one of the best hack n slasher of last gen, and it made incredibly good use of the LOTR licence. The followup was developed by someone else and not nearly as good. I believe they also made demonstone which was also really fun. And blood wake was pretty fun for an early xbox game. Lets not be too harsh how we remember stormfront, they didn't lose their way until Eragon. I think that was them anyway. Good luck to the employees and thanks for the good times.

@Stevedroid: some of us DID play it... I still consider it the Original NWN [www.bladekeep.com]
But yeah I can see how people would get confused

Just so people are clear, when they say Neverwinter Nights, they mean the 1991, 2D, AOL run MMORPG (one of the first MMORPGs actually) that none of you ever played. Not the 2002, 3D isometric, single player RPG - that's Bioware's of course.

Well, considering all they ever released, save Two Towers, was crap, I'm not surprised.
I mean...Spiderwick Chronicles? Blood Wake? They must have been surviving off of Two Towers' profits.

I've only played Two Towers, but it was a damn good game. Really the first movie -- > game adaptation that I was impressed with.

This should be a lesson for all developers to stop pushing crap into the market.
make good games and the threat of your studio closing down isnt as great

"offering no severance" not good.... lets hope its not a trend for developers to just carte blanche fuck off their employees after years of service.
Altho i'm not surprised that they are closing, if you start to develop crap games after making stuff like NWN your not going to go far in today's gaming market.

Of course they weren't making money with Lord of the Rings on their resume.
Is it really closing though? No joke?

@Stevedroid:
Thanks Steve for clearing that up. I was actually getting pretty confused so I grabbed my NWN's box to see if I saw their name somewhere on the box. Didn't see anything so that just made me wonder "what are they talking about?"

@buyj3llo: March 31 was the end of the fiscal year for a lot of companies. That's probably why they announced it today.

That's harsh. The Two Towers was a legitimately good game. Which is amazing and a half.

I kind of did enjoy Blood Wake. I did though really have a great time with Two Towers. I wish after that game. Stormfront would have made a new IP but change the IP of LOTR to there IP and use the ideas they made in that game for there own IP.

@OmegaVader: Actually, the original NWN was a gold box D&D Game that was played on AOL v1.2
That game is why I'm hooked on MMOs now.
This is very unfortunate news.

Oh man. Sad day.
I had the good fortune of working with Stormfront some time ago. They were great. Easy to work with, cool guys, very skilled -- a class act. They deserved better than "no severance and no further health benefits". I hope those talented individuals are re-hired by other companies very soon.

When I was about to graduate college, they were one of the few game companies that contacted me. The person I talked to wanted to do a phone interview with me. She didn't make the scheduled time, and reschedued. And missed the second one, and rescheduled again. After missing the third scheduled phone interview, I decided that was enough and never contacted the person back.
That's about as much interaction as I've had with them or their games, I think.

Neverwinter nights was an awesome game and the LOTR games weren't half bad. It's sad to see this company go but I think it's understandable when I realize that the only game I've heard of them making recently is Spiderwick chronicles.

@Stevedroid: I played it. First MMO I ever played and I remember the day it shut down as being a very sad day. I was always a huge D&D Pen & Paper guy, so having a D&D MMO was great fun.
So fast forward about a decade when DDO came out and I was excited...only to find out later that it sucked. But I digress. Anyway it's a sad day...Two Towers was fun as well.
